________________________________

Verhan Tŭrryés of Black Mountain is a handful.

Freshly enlisted in the Highland Regiment, he does all he can to steer clear of responsibility and commitment. Just not his cup of mead, that. Loose of tongue and even looser of morals, he rarely misses an opportunity to get into trouble—and into the other archers’ knickers, too.

In a unit composed almost entirely of Dark Elves, Hernan Seinnés, with his green eyes and auburn hair, is an outsider. When Verhan, up the creek again, is blackmailed into helping Hernan, he never expects to fall for him. But during the long hours spent training Hernan for the Honour Guard, feelings strike the Highlander right in the heart—and with the force of an arrow.

Unversed in relationships, Verhan finally plucks up enough courage to tell Hernan how he feels, only to drive the Asirhwӱnian away instead. If Verhan can swallow his pride, he might get one last chance to show Hernan what he means to him—and maybe this time he can hit the mark.

Carra's Review

I honestly don’t know how this author is able to keep putting out these short stories/novellas that pack so much into so few pages.  All I know is that as long as she keeps writing them, I’ll be clawing my way to the front to keep reading them.  And while I still may keep wishing they were longer, I keep finishing them fully satisfied every single time.

Verhan is like that immature guy we all knew back at the end of high school/just after who was just concerned in getting in other people’s pants—you know, the one everyone would roll their eyes at and break out the “manwhore” title to describe.  The one we all like seeing get taken down a peg or ten once they find “the one”.  Hernan is his absolute opposite—sweet and exceedingly innocent, but also a master of his craft.

While this story is not very long, the development of the relationship between Verhan and Hernan never feels rushed.  In keeping with Verhan’s adolescent attitude when it comes to relationships, the slight conflict that arises between him and Hernan feels very much like a mixed-signal mishap when someone is asked to the prom, followed by the classic note-passing afterward.  It could come across as corny and childish, but actually feels sweet with a touch of adorable…you know, one of those “aww…” times.

The more I see of The Order world in this series, the more that I want.  In this case, I also would have liked just a bit more of a glimpse into what came next after the end of the book—even more so than the other books in this series.  I’m hoping there will be some kind of follow-up for Verhan and Hernan in a future story because this time around I really could have used more time with them.

Regardless of that, I find myself still awarding 5 stars to Twenty-One Arrow Salute, not just because I loved everything about these two, but because the writing is simply outstanding.  And if that’s not enough, there were several moments where I found myself laughing out loud with some truly classic lines.  Until the next in the series, I’ll be waiting here patiently because every page in this series is worth it…and if you haven’t started it yet, you are missing out!
