Excerpt:

Alusia smiles wanly. “What happened in Kooram?” she asks.

“There was a party. We were dancing. Seamus and I were celebrating our engagement...” I pause, ashamed. He sits beside me, unaware of my role in this, oblivious to my own deception. “It was my fault.”

Seamus takes my hand. “Alondra, stop. You know this has nothing to do with you.”

“It has everything to do with her,” Alusia interrupts. “And her mother.”

“Look, although Alondra seems thankful for whatever you want to share with her, I don't care what these secrets are. This is not her fault and she does not need you blaming her.” Seamus's anger is new to me. I have been so amazed by his calm, his kindness; he is more like a Demorian now than I have ever seen him, and I have watched him cut a man's throat.

Alusia sighs. “I do not mean to assign blame. But we can no longer pretend that this was a rogue attack, that these events have not culminated in bringing you here, that fate has not worked its magic to get this book into her hands.” She runs her fingers along the book on her lap.

“It's fine,” I say. “But it was not fate. Maybe I did not make the only bad choices, but choices got us here. And I, for one, am tired of hearing about fate.”

“The attack,” Seamus continues. “It was sudden. A siren spell warned us before the mages were slaughtered. I don't know how they breached the Demorian guard, but without the dying spell of an elder mage, no one would be sitting here right now with you.”

“So you ran?” Alusia asks.

“I don't run,” I argue. “In fact, I am only here because someone kidnapped me in my sleep.”

“It was her father's wish,” Seamus mumbles.

“The forces came quickly. We spread the word to meet in the caves and Kooram split into two groups: those who were running for the caves, and those who would stay behind. My parents were with those running, but I stayed. Ereditus, our commander, rallied the troops. Seamus was already by my side. My friend, Lormander...”

I stop and think of that moment. Sanara's face, broken by the choice he was making, is etched into my memory. I watched her fingers slowly fall from his hand and the agony in her glance as she turned back to see him one last time tore me asunder. And now, somewhere, are they reunited? Did she lead everyone to Tallagut? Did he stay behind in the caves to face his death, remembering her kiss as the blade entered his heart? I choke on the images and tears rest on the precipice of my eyelids.

“We stayed,” I repeat. “There were so many of them. It was chaos. Smoke billowed from the streets, from our homes, from everything that was my childhood. I saw young boys, thinking they were brave, split in twain as the attackers stepped over the corpses, trailing death. What I remember most was the sound. The crash of swords, the screams of the fallen, the crackle of burning. The details are hazy. We left Kooram in ruins when we saw that we were outclassed. I walked through fields of carnage to the caves, only to wake on the other side, in a mirror world, yet untouched.”

“The king, he asked that we come here. He said you had the answers, the only weapon we could use against him,” Seamus adds. My shattered body sits beside him, but my mind and my soul are still with the dead.

“I am an old woman, and a forgotten mage,” Alusia says. “I am also the keeper of secrets and memories. I do not forge steel. My only weapon is knowledge. But that I have in abundance, and I believe it is time Alondra take her share.”

She rises from the dusty chair and approaches. I sense my hands as they lift to take the book she offers; the leather cover is hardened, but smooth to touch. I run my hand along the spine and trace the embossed seal.

“Please take this to your room. You will need time, and you will need privacy. When you are done, I will be waiting for your questions.”

TEACHING ROMAN by Gennifer Albin

June 2014

BOOK SUMMARY:

Jessica Stone has her life in perfect order until her perfectly boring boyfriend Brett puts things in perspective. So when she receives a call to action from her heartbroken best friend Cassie, she ditches her plans for Winter Break in gloomy Olympic Falls and sets off to Mexico for some fun in the sun.

Determined to use her oceanview to prep for her MCATS, she doesn't plan to run into anyone from Olympic State, least of all the cute communications prof she's been crushing on for a year. When he unexpectedly saves the day, the two are thrown together in a distinctly extracurricular activity.

Roman Markson doesn’t expect to run into anyone he knows from Olympic Falls while visiting his family in Puerto Vallarta, especially not a former student. Although Jess Stone has a way of catching men’s attention, a relationship with her is strictly off-limits. However, the rules feel less strict in Mexico, so they agree to a plan: one week in paradise and nothing more.

But avoiding each other back on campus is harder than they anticipated, especially when they can’t stay away from one another. Neither is sure what they have to learn—and lose—before life teaches them a lesson they’ll never forget.

About BEFORE YOU (Before & After Us #1)

Some say love is deadly. Some say love is beautiful. I say it is both.

Faith Watters spent her junior year traveling the world, studying in exquisite places, before returning to Oviedo High School. From the outside her life is picture-perfect. Captain of the dance team. Popular. Happy. Too bad it’s all a lie.

It will haunt me. It will claim me. It will shatter me. And I don't care.

Eighteen-year-old Diego Alvarez hates his new life in the States, but staying in Cuba is not an option. Covered in tattoos and scars, Diego doesn’t stand a chance of fitting in. Nor does he want to. His only concern is staying hidden from his past—a past, which if it were to surface, would cost him everything. Including his life.

At Oviedo High School, it seems that Faith Watters and Diego Alvarez do not belong together. But fate is as tricky as it is lovely. Freedom with no restraint is what they long for. What they get is something different entirely.

Love—it will ruin you and save you, both.

Melissa smiles. She flirts. She jokes. But she never shows her scars. Eight months after tragedy ripped her from her closest friend, Melissa is broken. Plagued by grief, rage, and the painful memory of a single forbidden kiss.

Javier has scars of his own. Life in the States was supposed to be a new beginning, but a boy obsessed by vengeance has no time for the American dream. To honor his familia, Javier joins the gang who set up his cousin, Diego. The entrance price is blood. Death is the only escape.

Two broken souls could make each other whole again—or be shattered forever.

Our time will come. And we’ll be ready.

Excerpt
“What I want is for you to want me like I want you!”
I clamp a hand to my mouth. Regret slaps me in the face.
Javier pulls my hand away. His stare takes in all of me. My eyes. My lips. I’m embarrassed by what I said. I’m embarrassed by my ridiculous heart, which thumps loudly, echoing his every touch.
“You want me, mami?”
Yes. In the deepest parts of my bones, yes.
Silence.
“Answer me.” His voice is demanding.
“No,” I say, stubborn.
A grin crawls across his face.
“I owe you an apology,” he says. “I couldn’t talk to you earlier. Wanted to. But I couldn’t. You understand?”
“Not at all.”
Javier’s warmth reminds me of the water. Of wanting to jump in. I’d do anything to cool off.
“If I explain it to you, will you remember in the morning?”
“Probably not,” I answer honestly. “But then again, you’re hard to forget.”

AFTER US is expected to release December 30, 2014.  Add it on Goodreads here.

Blog Tour: On the Wild Side by Yvonne Harriott

SYNOPSIS

Sparks fly when opposites attract ...
Not wanting to be in Boston on the weekend of her ex-fiancé's wedding city girl Gillian St. James heads to a cabin on a lake in Maine. She didn't bargain on getting stranded, or on her attraction to the cabin's rugged caretaker.
At the height of his career, Devon Jackson walked away from his job as a detective with the NYPD. His wife's murder had shattered his life, and he moved to a mountain retreat. When he's left in charge of the family business, his quiet life is turned upside down and he just can't seem to get the sexy weekend guest out of his mind.
She's running from the present, he's running from his past, and danger is nipping at their heels. Can they slow down long enough to think about a future together?

EXCERPT

The moon disappeared behind the clouds, leaving a dark black sky befitting Devon’s solemn mood. The evening hadn’t had to end like it did. He’d been having a good time. So good, in fact, that he’d almost believed the charade that they were a real couple sightseeing. They had even held hands a few times. Would it be so bad if they were a real couple? Would it have been so bad if he’d spent the night at her cabin?
He pressed down on the accelerator and the pickup leaped forward. When the truck drifted close to the edge of the cliff, skidding on the gravel, he eased off the gas. That snapped him back to reality, and fast. What was he thinking? Driving like a mad man on the road, for one, and second, he had no business messing with Gillian.
“You don’t have to feel guilty about liking Gillian.”
His sister was a hopeless romantic, which didn’t make sense to him. Her relationship with her husband was rocky at best. She hadn’t been happy for a while until he’d found out why and fixed it. Then everyone was happy. But he couldn’t do the same for his life.
“Is she pretty?”
Gillian didn’t just have an outer beauty, but inner beauty as well. Her warm laughter was contagious. It drew you into her. He found that he wanted to be with her. When she wasn’t around he was thinking about her. The kiss they had shared … After Rachelle, he’d thought that part of his life was over.
“Rachelle’s death wasn’t your fault.”
“Yes it was. You should have protected her,” his demon answered back.
Devon came to an abrupt halt in front of the cabin, got out of the truck and slammed the door. He practically ran up the steps and flung open the door. Samson’s head shot up. The dog took one look at his face and put his head back down on his paws, not caring at all what was eating him.
He grabbed the phone and punched in Mac’s number. When Mac answered, Devon growled, “When are you going to have her SUV repaired?”
“Who is this?” Mac asked, his voice rough from sleep.
“The Range Rover you fished out of the ditch. When will the repairs be completed?”
“What in the hell has gotten you all bent out of shape? Do you know what time it is?”
“I don’t give a damn what time it is.”
“You need to get yourself a woman.”
“What I need is for you to get off your lazy―”

Mac cut him off in mid-sentence, told him to kiss a part of his anatomy he hadn’t heard of and something else that crudely involved his mother. Then he slammed the phone down in Devon’s ear. Devon thought about calling Mac back but decided against it. Instead, he went outside, retrieved his axe from the shed, lined up the logs and began chopping.

My Review
This is the first time I’ve read anything by this author.  I have to say, the writing is well done and everything moves along quite smoothly throughout the story.  You’ve got a great storyline that flows nicely, even if you kind of know where the story is heading (or at least I figured out where it was going).

While I found both of the main characters, Gillian and Devon, strong and intriguing, I just had a hard time seeing them as a couple.  The relationship felt rough around the edges and just a bit forced to me.  I think most of this was due to Devon’s overall attitude which seemed just a bit too harsh.  It did emphasize how much opposite each other Gillian and Devon are though.

I give this book a 3.5 star rating and would recommend to 18+.  A solid story that will keep you interested and hoping that these two will be able to work everything out in the end.

Book Review: The Curse Breakers (Curse Keepers Series Book 2) by Denise Grover Swank

The Curse Breakers (The Curse Keeper, #2)The Curse Breakers by Denise Grover Swank

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I thought the first book in this series was great. This one? Even better. You’ve still got the totally intriguing plot based on the Lost Colony of Roanoke with the author’s own unique twist, now with the added complication of a second romantic interest for Ellie. The author uses both to keep you totally drawn into the story-I had a really hard time putting this down (and was up way past my bedtime…again).

Even with Collin’s rough-around-the-edges character, you still are wanting him to be the one for Ellie…even if the whole situation came about because of his actions. And then there’s David, who’s totally swoon-worthy in his own right and able to help Ellie with his own knowledge and researching. And it’s great to see Ellie’s character growing and learning. All of them together-along with the still strong cast of secondary characters-keep you riveted to the story and impatiently waiting for the next book to arrive.

The writing is still as good as the first book…the characters grow even richer and more rounded out…and the totally unique plot all contribute to this wonderful series that no paranormal book lover should miss.

Still 18+ for the steamy scenes…and be advised this is still part of a series so you’ll want to read The Curse Keepers first-and know there’s more to come after this one. 5 out of 5 stars for this excellent continuation of the series.

My Review

My Soul for YouMy Soul for You by Morgana Phoenix

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I was given a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

This is the first time I’ve read a book from this author’s new adult/adult line..and just like every one of her YA books, I was not disappointed. In fact, I thoroughly enjoyed the story-it deserves every one of the five stars I rated it, and maybe a few more.

Everything in this book is set up so well that you don’t even realize until well over halfway through just how much of a thriller it is and how far into the story you’ve been drawn in. The suspense continues to build until the climactic scene at the end, keeping you desperately swiping the pages trying to find out just what is going on and what the big secret is.

The characters are very well done, especially Kaleb (*swoon*)-I always love a tough, protective alpha male. And Katie is a good, strong female lead who knows how to take care of herself. Katie’s best friend Ashlee is the only character that I didn’t embrace wholeheartedly, only because I felt her maturity level was not quite where it should be for someone in their final year of high school. Ashlee and Larson’s relationship provides a nice side arc to add to the overall story, and Larson is another swoon-worthy, yummy guy that you’re going to love.

And let’s not forget those steamy scenes between Katie and Kaleb-they will definitely fog up your glasses and windows…so don’t say I didn’t warn you ;-) If you haven’t added Kaleb to your book boyfriend list before you get to those scenes, you’ll be scrambling like crazy to add him after.

So if you’re looking for a suspenseful romantic thriller, look no further. My Soul for You will hold your attention and keep you guessing until the end.

18+ for language and adult content
