“They killed me, but I survived.”

Three years after Rory Riordan foiled her own murder, she still trusts no one. Not Dr. Z, the eccentric college professor who has taken her under his wing, not Benji, the endearing, attractive classmate who insists on following her around, and certainly not Cy, the beautifully dark and mysterious boy who sits on the first row in Dr. Z’s Astrobiology class and asks far too many questions.

When Rory witnesses Cy being abducted by soldiers in the middle of the night, she finds herself submersed in a world that holds even more secrets than she could imagine--even darker secrets than her own.

From #1 New York Times Bestseller Jamie McGuire, experience the perfect combination of her bestselling books Providence & Beautiful Disaster. This New Adult Sci-Fi Romance is an action-packed, whiplash-inducing roller coaster ride. Page after page, this unpredictable, dark and sexy nail biter will keep readers guessing until the very end!

MY REVIEW

I'm kind of torn on how to rate this book.  Although it is billed as sci-fi romance, the entire first half really reads like a contemporary romance with almost no sci-fi elements at all.  And even for a contemporary, I still had a hard time getting into the first half of the book.  The second half though, the whole sci-fi part becomes glaringly obvious.  That's also when the action really begins, and where I started to become more attached to the story.

The characters were good, and Benji was far and away my favorite.  Even with his own secret, I still adored him (sweet, sexy, and later on just WOW) and almost cursed the author near the end of the book after a particular tense and emotional scene.

If you are a hardcore sci-fi fan, you probably won't be able to get into the first half of the book like I couldn't, but just hold on until that part passes and you'll get to the meat of the story.  Then the second half will have you quickly flipping the pages to see what comes next, and enjoying the action and suspense you'll find.

One thing I didn't quite understand is why the book is named after a character that you only see for the last part of the book.  The story doesn't really center on her, it really concentrates more on Rory, our female lead, her interactions with Benji and Cy, and how they all get through all the craziness.

Since I was torn between the two halves of the book, but also taking into account the exciting second half (and the "no no no no" moment the author threw out there toward the end), I give this 3.5 stars, and would recommend for 18+ due to language and some adult situations.
