Guest Post: LOVE AND MURDER AT THE BEACH by Morgan Brice

Welcome author Morgan Brice to Making it Happen!

Love and Murder at the Beach

By Morgan Brice

If you’re a beach bum like me, you love a chair in the sand under an umbrella, a cool drink, and either a stack of books or a stuffed Kindle. And ghosts. Lots of ghosts.

I’ve always been fascinated with haunted hotels and ghost stories set in vacation spots. Whenever I visit a new city, I love to take a local ghost tour and read up on all the haunts and scandals. Whether it’s pirate ghosts, shipwreck victims, tragic love affairs or long-ago murder mysteries, I love getting a glimpse of the dark side of paradise.

In my bestselling urban fantasy MM paranormal romance Badlands series, psychic medium Simon Kincaide teams up with skeptical cop Vic D’Amato to track down supernatural killers in Myrtle Beach. Myrtle Beach is a favorite vacation destination of mine, so it’s a lot of fun for me to set a series there. I’m constantly discovering new ghost stories, cool bits of history, and strange tidbits that I can use to liven up the next book.

Myrtle Beach is amusement parks and arcades, motorcycles and mini golf, fireworks and fresh seafood. I gravitate toward the main stretch of the Grand Strand, where the action is, with beachfront hotels, surf shops and great food. It’s not the golf and steak house posh climate of North Myrtle; it’s a parasailing, Italian ice, tiki bar wonderland.

Then I discovered Cape May, New Jersey, and knew I had to set another romance series there! Not only is Cape May several hundred miles north, but the vibe is completely different—from Myrtle Beach, and from Cape May’s closer cousin, Wildwood. Cape May is filled with beautiful Victorian houses, striped beach cabanas, fire pits, Adirondack chairs, and local wineries. It’s more of a polo shirt and khakis kind of place, not surprising since its founders hoped to entice the parasol and top hat crowd away from Newport.

Cape May seemed like the perfect place for my newest series, Treasure Trail, which pairs up Erik Mitchell, a former art fraud investigator with Ben Nolan, a Newark ex-cop. Sparks fly when Ben and Erik meet. But when a cursed hotel’s long-ago scandals resurface, the two men are pulled into a web of lies, danger and deception that will test their bond—and might make them Cape May’s newest ghosts.

Treasure Trail will be out by early July, right in time for vacation reading! In the meantime, grab a beach drink, find a spot on the beach, and try one of the Badlands books or my Witchbane series for some spooky chills and sexy thrills!
