We'd like to welcome Author Brandi Willis Schreiber to Making it Happen today as she talks about what makes her characters so perfect for each other in "The Family Tree"!

Oh, Bea and Cairn! These two people stole my heart when I was writing their heartbreaking stories and how they got their second chances with each other.

Although they are from two different continents and have completely different backgrounds, they are both searching for answers in their lives, and that mutual yearning is what draws them together and makes them perfect for each other.

Bea DuBois’s grief and longing for connection have become so unbearable that she follows a dead branch of her family tree to Scotland in hopes she’ll find someone - anyone - to whom she’s related. She has only a single sheet of family history and a contact, Eleanor Brightwell, but she takes an extreme leap of faith and walks into this stranger’s home to find answers. It’s a move that appears desperate on the surface, but really reveals her bravery, intelligence, and respect for family ties. She’s smart, tenacious, but also fragile. Death has robbed her of her family, and her grief is holding her hostage. She doesn’t know what she’ll do if she doesn’t find a relative because for her, finding a relative means finding family.

Cairn Brightwell, on the other hand, is a man who is also grieving and longing for connection, but his loss is different. He feels responsible for his failed first marriage, and he’s scared for his baby sister, who is dying of leukemia because she’s stopped responding to treatments and no donors are a match. He knows, however, that if love comes around again, he’ll do things differently. He just doesn’t know how he will handle the impossible prospect of losing his baby sister.

And then Bea walks into Cairn’s family home. Bea and Cairn are attracted to each other instantly, but the attraction is more than skin-deep. Cairn is attracted to Bea’s intelligence, tenacity, and faith, and Bea is moved by Cairn’s selfless help with her genealogy research, generosity, and love of family. They quickly find that attraction evolves into something much more profound.

It isn’t until the end of the story, however, that Bea learns that she can give the Brightwells the ultimate gift that changes her quest for a second chance at love, and Cairn learns what the wants his second chance to look like. They are perfect for each other because they meet each other’s needs - mind, body, and soul - and learn one’s real family isn’t defined by a family tree, but rather, by those who love you. They find their answers in each other, and that leads to the best second chance of all!
