Chapter 1

Killer Road
April 2007

They died, Rebecca Brown’s mum and dad. They were killed on a road with a big reputation. Rebecca could only imagine it. She was hundreds of miles from the scene of the crash when it happened. When she thought of that road, she pictured it covered in ice, black ice, since the accident took place on a bitter December night. The A42, was the road’s alphanumeric name. The Killer Road, they called it back then in the papers. The Killer Road has struck again! The headlines came into Rebecca’s mind like a voice, like Vincent Price, as if the road arched up into vertical life, a tarmac monster stalking its victims.

Rebecca Brown was four years old when she became an orphan, alongside her sister, Colette, and her brother, Austen. Rebecca was the youngest. She couldn’t even remember the moment she was told. What had they said? ‘Mummy and Daddy have had a terrible accident, dear. In the car.’  At the time, she knew little more than the fact. They were gone. They’d been there all the days of her life, and then they were not. Of the circumstances and detail, she knew next to nothing. Perhaps Rebecca hadn’t thought to ask questions. Perhaps there was little more to say to a child so young. As Rebecca grew, though, so did her thirst for knowledge. But it seemed that, even if there had been a window of opportunity to make her enquiries, that window got bricked up years ago. There was a solid wall now between Rebecca Brown and the truth.

Julia and Stephen, her parents had been called. ‘Julia and Stephen,’ Rebecca liked to say aloud when she was alone in her garret bedroom. She could barely remember them but she thought they sounded really nice. She was sure that they were kind people, with ready smiles and lovely clean clothes.

It was their grandparents who raised the Brown children. It was the Grands who took the youngsters into their care at Taransay, a red sandstone mansion in the north of Scotland. Taransay was only partially restored. It had vast, austere rooms and draughty, wood-panelled corridors; a real Amityville Horror of a home, scary even on a cornflower sky summer’s day, and a weird contrast to the heavenly Highland surroundings. They lived high up on a plateau that could have been made for a view. There was an imposing tree-lined driveway and the steading, as Rebecca’s grandfather Ralph liked to call it, overlooked the magnificent Morar Sands. The golden beach met the Atlantic Ocean which unfurled itself like ruffled navy silk on the calmest of days, but the fierce ones were just as precious to Rebecca, as she stood at her dormer window looking out across the sea’s tossing and turning. She loved it best when the gods got angry down there in the depths and rose up, throwing the spray right at her face.

The land surrounding Taransay was mostly meadow, with the churn and splat of their cattle’s hooves and excretions. Their cowhand, Murdo Hendry, tended the animals. They had mostly Friesians but some Jerseys whose milk was creamier with more butterfat. And they had five Swedish Reds, the strongest and healthiest of the herd, and Rebecca’s personal favourites. They sold their high quality milk to a premium ice cream manufacturer but the income from such a small herd fell considerably short of supporting the Brown clan.

Murdo also tended a half acre of vegetable patch which their grandmother Primmy was inclined to call ‘the potager’. She was often found to use French substitutes for every day words. Austen told his younger sisters that this habit of their grandmother’s was part of her general denial and dislike of where they had ended up. He claimed that her French references were a deliberate barrier to assimilation. Primrose Anctillious Brown described herself as English to the core and it had not been her choice to relocate to Scotland.

The henhouse was Rebecca’s domain. They had a couple of dozen hybrid laying hens which produced far more than they could ever eat, so they supplied their excess to Moss Mills Nursing Home which made them all feel they were doing their bit for the community. However, the Browns were utterly insular and rarely met the community. It was Murdo Hendry – himself a man of very few words – who delivered the eggs.

The perimeter of their land was marked with stone dyke walls, upon which Rebecca could balance, even on the windiest of days. She was certain that this was a skill which would be good for something.

In many ways, the Browns were living in paradise, albeit a rather unpredictable one weather-wise. The blot on the landscape was really the house which was such a strange hulking abode. There was barely a smooth exterior surface. The builder had lumped on every possible feature: turrets, balconies, oriels, buttresses, corbels and a dozen chimneys. And all of the downstairs windows had metal bars fitted on the outside. Not the pretty ones you get in Spain, but the kind you get in gaol. Taransay looked more like a Rhenish correctional facility than a family home. No, this abode was not for the faint-hearted and yet the bereaved children were brought to its huge oak door, for re-settlement; like little refugees with their suitcases and their sorrow.

The rambling, shambling, freezing house was often cited as the reason that guests could not join them. They had moved into the sprawling mansion after the accident, so that there would be room for all of them. And there certainly was. A small regiment would have found it spacious. The house was only partly restored and some years into their tenure, it had become obvious that not only would Taransay never be finished whilst under their guardianship but that nobody had the slightest ambition to try.

MAGIC OF BOOKS Birthday Bash-HORROR! Includes Giveaway!

Magic of Books Promotions hosted its first tour during the month of November three years ago.

The company was created from the passion and desire of its owner, Tami Adams, because of her experiences as an author. From her struggles to have her books viewed and appreciated she knew there had to be another way.

Three years later Tami no longer writes but is determined to show the world the magic that lies within the pages of all books.

The following authors are helping Magic of Books to celebrate its birthday. Enjoy.

Message from Tami:

The last three years have been an incredible journey. I've made so many friends who began as bloggers, readers, and authors. I have been privileged to present and showcase new and old books from seasoned and new authors. I've learned so much I didn't even realize I should know prior to getting into this business. And after three years I can honestly say I'm still learning, I'm still growing, and I'm still making friends. I love and appreciate all of you who have supported my little slice of heaven. From the bottom of my heart, thank you.

Book Excerpt

Take an inside look on Something Down There with this thrilling excerpt.
Reaching into his pants pocket, he drew out a small leather case attached to a silver chain and dangled it before her eyes.

Karen grabbed it from his hand and looked it over as if she needed to make certain it was real. "I know I took the damned keys from the car," she said. All the same, she felt a moment of relief at having a new set in her possession. That relief, however, ended in a flash.

With a powerful leap to a ledge above, Rahm crossed his arms over his chest like a dictator about to make a pronouncement. "They won't do you any good," he bellowed.

Jeremy swallowed hard, raising a hand to his throat. "W-what do you mean?" he said, reaching out for something to grab onto. Finding nothing, he spread his legs wide, feet flat on the floor, trying to maintain his balance.

Rahm, aware of the significance of this moment and wanting to ensure that it remained stamped in everyone's mind, stood tall, chin out. "While you were sleeping last night, I climbed out and drove your car off a bridge. You will not be allowed to leave."

Karen's hands flew to her face. She began to cry and dropped to one knee. Protectively, Jeremy rushed to her side, encircled her in his arms, and pulled her close. He glared at this insane man, his new enemy, standing above. With hate etched in the dark hollows of his cheeks and in the lines of his furrowed brow, he said, "What do you mean? Why can't we leave? You won't get away with this!"

Rahm, a leader of few but a leader nonetheless, addressed his flock, gathering with solemnity about the pair, now unofficial members of the tribe, even if against their will. All eyes riveted up.

"You can't leave because we need you. That is, we need your baby-the baby you will have, sooner or later. And yes, we will get away with it. You see, the harnesses are gone, and we dismantled the machinery that lowered you down. You will never be able to find your way out. Don't even try. It would be suicidal."

Karen stared at her husband, her jaw dropping in disbelief, as the horror of her predicament bore down with jackhammer force into her brain. Unless she and Jeremy were guided out, they were snared, trapped, condemned, damned. Without the candles, lanterns, or torches they couldn't see the tips of their fingers, and even with their carbide lamps they wouldn't know the way through this puzzling maze with its unknown levels and intricate network.

Jeremy's nails dug into his wife's shoulders. "Dear God," he wailed. "We're doomed, and it's all my fault. Forgive me, Karen. Please!"

She looked at him blankly, then blinked, her breath coming in staccato bursts, piercing her lungs like wounds from a knife. She began to run blindly, crying, "Let me die! Let me die!"

EXCERPT

A single light illuminated the table between us. Miah fidgeted across from me, his hands free, not bound like mine. The dark room echoed with scary vastness, clearly bigger than the rooms in which I’d been held. The man tucked in the shadows spoke up, his shadow black, just that much darker than the surrounding wall I could see him move.
“Under each box is a ping pong ball, one white, one orange. You and only you can know the color under each box. You aren’t to show or otherwise indicate which ball is which. Your partner has an identical set.” He sounded almost bored, like he’d memorized these lines to rattle off without emotion.
I tore my eyes from the small white cardboard boxes carefully positioned before us. As I sought Miah’s gaze, I couldn’t help but fidget with the thick plastic restraints pinning my wrists together. He stared at the boxes as if waiting for them to attack. He opened his mouth to say something before clamping it shut. His shaggy hair hung in greasy clumps, beard longer than normal, but on the whole, he looked no worse for wear.
Not like me. Bruised, scraped, gaunt. My core felt hollowed out, the smallest of sparks left inside.
“Okay,” I frowned, glancing into the darkness.
“The rules are simple. Choose orange to save yourself, white to save the other person. If you both choose the white ball, you both live. If you both choose the orange ball, you die.”
My tongue felt sluggish inside the dry walls of my mouth. “And if I choose white and he chooses orange?” I asked the shadow.
Miah finally met my eye. I tried to read those icy blues and came up with only question marks. My boyfriend of a year, a man I’d let into my inner circle, and I couldn’t decipher a thing on his face. The reality of the situation sank like a lead ball in my gut and I struggled to remain calm. I fixed a poker face, trying to hide any outward sign that I was scared shitless. The reason I was in this situation was still a mystery, but whoever had organized this little game probably would’ve loved watching me dissolve.
Miah’s throat clicked before he spoke up, answering my question with a flat voice. “You die.”
The boxes sat motionless, concealing my fate. There was a beauty and simplicity in the game. I knew there was a trick lurking in there somewhere, but I had to buy enough time to think it through and plan.
“You have five minutes to decide. Feel free to discuss your decision,” the voice said from the corner. I could practically hear the pleasure dripping from his commands. The guy was getting his rocks off on this and I still had no idea why.
My eyebrows shot up. “Wait. We talk about this first? It’s not a one, two, three draw type thing?”
Miah leaned forward, stealing my attention. He pressed his hands flat on the table as he spoke. “There’s nothing to talk about. Obviously, I’m going to save you.”
My brain tripped on that word a few times like a record caught on a scratch. Obviously. Obviously. A few tense heartbeats passed before I couldn’t stand the silence any longer.
“If this is an elaborate way of proposing, I’ll give you one guess what my answer will be.”
“It’s a pretty obvious solution. We both choose white and we walk out of here, right?” He said it with such conviction, like he couldn’t imagine a scenario where I wouldn’t go along with that plan.
There was that word again. My throat creaked my discomfort and he looked up, brows wrinkling in horrified concern. “Right?”
I didn’t yet know what ball each box hid, but my hands hovered over them as if holding a great weight. “It’s not that simple,” I whispered, mostly to myself.
Miah slammed his elbows down on the table and gestured with both hands. “Yes it is. It is that simple.”
My vision swam with tears I dared not show. “And how do I know you won’t choose the orange ball?”
He considered the question. When he spoke next, his voice was low. “I suppose you don’t.” He lurched forward, the wooden chair clattering out from under him. “You have to trust me.”
“Trust…” I whispered as I stared at the boxes. That’s what this all comes down to. Do I trust my boyfriend?
