Review & Giveaway: THE MESSENGER by TM Smith (The Archangel Trilogy #1)

The Messenger
Series: The Archangel Trilogy #1
Author: TM Smith
Genre: Paranormal Romance
Release Date: September 25, 2018

For centuries Gabriel, Michael and Lucifer have worked together, coexisting in the same universe. Gabriel chooses to remain silent and secluded, preferring the garden in the Hall of Souls. He dances beneath the Tree of Life, barefoot and with reckless abandon…until the day he looks into the eyes of another angel and sees the dreams he’s kept silent mirrored there.

Eons have passed since the moment Michael came to be the general of the All Father’s army in heaven, the protector of mankind. Michael has been in love with Lucifer for as long as he can remember, their relationship second only to his bond with the All Father. But lately, Michael has begun to notice cracks in the surface of their love, sensing that his lover is not as angelic as he seems.

Lucifer was the All Father’s first creation, the bringer of light, his Morning Star. He has sat to the right of the throne every day since the dawn of time. Two things were tasked to the Archangels from the start: put no other before the All Father, and protect the humans he cherishes. Lucifer challenges both sacred rules. He puts his love for Michael before his love for his creator, and he questions his creator’s wisdom when it comes to the atrocities he has seen committed by mankind.

One will fall while two remain and grow stronger. A battle of wills is on the horizon, and not only mankind, but the fate of all beings will hang in the balance.

"Interesting gay romance take on God and His angels" ~ Amazon Review
"Author TM Smith rewrites Christian theology with a vivid imagination and true, all-encompassing-love God, introducing us to her new world of Angels and Demons!" ~ Amazon Review

I’m am absolutely not a religious person, never read the Bible, and what I know of Christianity is from friends, required literature in school, and television.  So, as you might expect I had no real preconceived ideas of any religious framework before starting to read this story.  I personally think that was a good thing, since I was able to see the author’s vision for the story and not overlay it on any existing religious beliefs—this is fiction after all, and our world should have very little bearing on the story the author is trying to tell.  What I found was a thought-provoking book that played with my emotions (I mean, who’d have thought you could sympathize with Satan?), and some powerful scenes that were stunning in their imagery and intensity.

Though this is meant to be Gabriel’s story, in order to tell it we need to learn about Michael and Lucifer’s relationship—one that is cracking under the strain of Lucifer’s continued questioning of the All Father and his loss of faith in humanity.  While I mentioned having sympathy for Satan, given what was expected of Lucifer (what is expected of all archangels-protecting mankind and putting no other before the All Father), and his insistence on not just pushing but smashing those boundaries, there was only ever one outcome that could come to be.

Gabriel is the essence of innocence, but can protect and fight when needed just as fiercely as his counterparts.  His penchant for communing with the souls at the Tree of Life embodies hope and joy, something he willingly shares with anyone who needs it to refresh their own souls.  Michael, as the general of the All Father’s army in heaven, is a relentless protector, strong and true, but still hurts from the splintering of his relationship with Lucifer.  Gabriel and Michael fit easily together, with Gabriel helping Michael to heal.

Yes, this is a romance—one that rewrites what you may see as religious canon—but don’t let your own religious beliefs color your opinion of this story.  This is about love, pure and simple, regardless of the players.  Part of telling the story includes some scenes of obvious religious nature, some of which I personally could have done without (but this is a strongly personal viewpoint due to my own beliefs…or rather non-belief), but without which Lucifer’s true nature of what he becomes cannot be fully realized.  There are also times when the characters become quite introspective, and I found that this lead to a greater depth in the overall story.

The Messenger was a 4.5-star read for me, and I’m really looking forward to the rest of this series—especially given the epilogue and its tease with Raphael’s character.  I think readers’ reactions will probably differ quite a bit depending on their own religious backgrounds, but regardless you’re still going to find a strong, solid, and provocative story that will have your attention from cover to cover.  This book is meant for readers 18+ for sexual content.

Blurb

Sometimes you must fall before you can fly free.

Despite having had a rough life, Seth has a big heart. After spending nearly ten years sleeping rough on the streets of New York, he’s managed to get himself freelance work and a place to live. But his new-found security is about to be torn apart, as the horrors of his past come back to haunt him in the worst possible way.

Dante was sent to watch over a young Seth when his mother died. As an angel, he had many rules to follow. The most important of which was to never fall in love—especially when it involves a human who is your charge. For the last ten years, Dante has kept his feelings for Seth hidden. That is until the night Seth’s past catches up with him.

When Seth is murdered, their destinies are changed forever. Feelings and emotions come to the surface, but will the rules that govern the afterlife keep Dante and Seth apart for eternity, or will they be able to find their happily ever after together?

Excerpt

Seth kept the last cup of coffee, now barely lukewarm, for the man who always sat alone, distant from the rest. There was something about him that mesmerized Seth in a way he couldn’t describe. It was probably the man’s eyes, which were a vivid shade of blue that pierced even the darkest night. He sat on the same bench every night, huddled in a tatty black trench coat.

“Seth.” Blue Eyes nodded his thanks as he wrapped his hands around the cup Seth handed to him.

“It’s not very warm, I’m afraid.”

Blue Eyes shrugged, never taking his gaze off Seth as he sipped the coffee. His dark hair fell to his shoulders in waves, framing his handsome face. His olive skin tone made him appear healthier than the rest, although Seth was reasonably sure that was deceptive. A short beard and mustache helped further define his broad chin and sculpted cheekbones. Seth thought to ask his name, but couldn’t convince the question to leave his lips.

He was always like that around Blue Eyes: tongue-tied and awkward. The man was incredibly gorgeous, and Seth couldn’t help but be physically attracted to him. Maybe in another lifetime, under very different circumstances, he would have the confidence to ask Blue Eyes more about himself; discover the mysteries sparkling in the depths of his eyes. But things were what they were and showing interest in the man was wholly inappropriate. So, instead of asking Blue Eyes his name, he uttered a goodbye and turned to go.

Carra's Review

First, I must mention how much I love the cover for this book.  It fits very well with the story, and was striking enough to interest me for the story before I even read the synopsis.  Once I started reading, I immediately took a liking to both Seth and Dante.

Seth is a character for whom it’s easy to feel with his past and with the circumstances in which he finds himself due to something he observed as a teen.  It’s also easy to empathize with Dante—after watching over Seth for so long and developing feelings for him, you can’t help but want to cheer them on for a happy ending.  Once Seth dies and things start to get weird, it makes things a lot more complicated.

I found myself on the fence about Killian, another angel, as well as Cal, someone Seth helped while he was alive but who also comes into play one he’s dead.  Both of them irritated me for different reasons.  Killian it was his frankly immature plays at seducing Dante, especially when Dante keeps outright telling him no.  That Killian kept going there, and that Dante kept letting it get to him was a bit aggravating.  With Cal, the feeling was more elusive, it’s hard to say more without getting spoiler-y.

There were some inconsistencies in the story, and some points were repetitive when going from Seth’s point of view to Dante’s and vice versa since things were reiterated as each character went back over things.  But there’s enough going on to still keep readers’ attention while they work on taking down the bad guy (the Doctor).

Fans of paranormal M/M romance will want to check out For You I Fall, and for me this hovered between 3.5 and 4 stars (so let’s split the difference for 3.75).  It does have my interest piqued for more in the series, so I’ll be checking out the next book to see where the authors take things.  This book is meant for readers 18+ for adult language and sexual content.

An Excerpt from the Book

Take an inside look at Virtue and Honor. Read this sizzling excerpt from the book.

His gaze seemed to bore through her, all the way through her soul and to her deepest secrets. As if on cue, her back began to itch, the message that she had a miracle to perform and her iridescent purple wings longed for release. She ignored it; after all, he was dancing her way and all thought processes ceased to function.
Maybe Harper was right, maybe she needed to move on. Or at least find a distraction, like the itch on her back.
The itch graduated to a burn, and it became apparent her miracle was needed, and soon. She looked around, trying to figure out who was supposed to be the lucky recipient of grace that evening. Her extra sense of perception, another gift that came with her wings, failed her in the orgy of lights, loud music, alcohol, and dancing men.
A low click echoed in her ears. The people around her acted oblivious to the sound, but it rattled through her, setting every nerve in her body on fire. It was the sound of a cocking gun, and she swallowed hard. After three years of working miracles, her boss must have expected her to be desensitized to the sound, but she was not.
The sound of the trigger as it moved backward was enough to cause her heart to leap into her throat, followed by the explosion that came as a bullet exited the chamber. Each painful second moved in slow motion, the bullet slicing its way through the air, a path set straight for the sweaty chest of the guy who had smiled at her moments before.
Ignoring the eyes that might be on her, she wrapped herself in invisibility, and let out her wings as she jumped into the air. Drawing attention to herself by disappearing in front of them was a huge risk, but as the piece of metal tore through the air, she had no other choice. If she was chastised later for her actions, so be it. She wasn’t going to let a bullet take someone, not on her watch.
She made contact with him, slamming hard into his chest and wrapping her arms around him. A searing pain spread across her shoulder, and she bit her lip as hard as possible to keep herself from making a sound as they fell to the ground. The last thing she needed, in addition to everything else that night, was for him to know she was there.
Fluttering her wings, she tried to ease their descent to the floor, but her left wing remained still. Something was wrong—very wrong.

Tour-Excerpt & Giveaway: VEILED IN DARKNESS by Valerie Twombly (Eternally Mated #2)

Veiled in Darkness
Eternally Mated, #2
by Valerie Twombly
Paranormal Romance
Self published

Synopsis

The story continues...

When Eli spots Ashley across a bloody battlefield, he can only steal a moment alone with her. Powerless is an emotion new to the hunter, but it’s one he faces daily when he realizes killing the demon king in order to free his mate is out of the question.

‘Death’ was not a nickname Ashley wished to carry. Being the only one able to stop Lucifer’s evil plan was an even worse fate. When she discovers her true ancestry, fear that she will succumb to her darker side forces her to dig deep for the strength she needs to fight.

The clock is ticking and soon Ashley will face the ultimate test.

Excerpt

Eli scanned the battlefield. Hacked body parts littered the ground and pools of blood coated the landscape. The earth groaned as she absorbed the foul liquid of the fallen demons.

The battle had lasted hours. How many he wasn’t sure, but his muscles ached and blood coated his clothing. Most of it from those he’d slain, but some belonged to him. He was too weak and exhausted to heal himself. Besides, his only thought at that moment was of her. He’d spotted Ashley the last time they’d battled. She was seen collecting the demons’ souls and sending them––he supposed––to Hell. Lucifer would likely have her bring them back to life so this hellish nightmare could start again.

Eli cringed at the thought.

He’d tried to speak with her, but when she’d spotted him, she had vanished. This time… This time she would face him. It had been a month since she’d gone. Seven hundred and thirty hours, a fraction of time to an angel but an eternity to him. He missed her so much his heart actually ached. Every morning he awoke and wondered if she thought of him. Every night he went to his empty bed and prayed she remembered he loved her. Had she made it through the day? Was her mind still intact or had Lucifer broken her? He tried not to think about it because if he did, he was tempted to fall again, and this time he’d make sure he made it all the way to Hell. Luckily, his sanity stayed in check, and he reminded himself of the gift Ashley had given him. The sacrifice she had made to save his soul would never be forgotten. He would remain steadfast in his duties while he searched for a way to save her.

She was here and her back was to him. Her hair, pulled into a single braid, draped over one shoulder.

His fingers itched to unravel the golden strands and set them free.

Black wings, speckled with gold dust, were spread as she pointed to each demon and watched their body parts vanish. Eli wrapped his own wings around his body and cloaked himself. Now that he knew she would flee, necessity dictated he hide his presence. She was far too young and inexperienced to escape him now.

He watched…waited in silence as she made her way around the field. For some reason the others ignored her, and then it dawned on him. They couldn’t see her. A smile lifted his lips and pride swelled inside him.

So, my little angel has learned how to cloak herself as well.

She was close. He waited for her to finally tend to the demon body he stood over. He reached out and grabbed her. She gasped, her power flaring.

He revealed himself. “You can’t run from me this time.”

Her face lit with relief then panic. “Eli, you need to let me go.” Anger flashed in her green eyes. “You know I could have killed you!”

“You can’t kill your own mate, so stop running from me.” He pulled her closer and erected a barrier around them to keep others from viewing their private moment. “I’ve missed you. Are you okay?” He moved his gaze from her eyes to her full pink lips then dipped to her breasts. She wore some black leather thing that revealed more cleavage than he cared for her to share. Matching pants clung to her curves, and boots completed the ensemble. Damn she was hot, and his c*ck throbbed with need.

“I’m as well as can be expected. Now release me, I have work to do.”

“Don’t care,” he stated.

“We aren’t supposed to be together. Lucifer will punish you if he finds out,” she whispered and glanced around, likely looking for the devil himself.

“Listen to me.” He tightened his grip, fearful she’d somehow get away before he had a chance to speak. “I don’t care what that bastard does to me. Do you understand?”

“Eli, no––”

“I. Don’t. F*cking. Care.” He gave her a slight shake to bring her back to him. “He can do to me whatever he desires. If he wants to let demons pick the flesh from my bones then pour salt over my wounds, so be it.”

“No. No.” She struggled to free herself. “Please don’t say that. I can’t bear the thought of him hurting you.” She scanned his bloody clothing. “You’re hurt.”

“I’m fine.” He bent his head and claimed her mouth. Demanding and passionate, his desire for her flared white-hot. She continued to struggle, but he pressed his tongue against her lips until finally she softened and gave in. Opened to him until they were both kissing each other as if it were the end of the world. To Eli, it might as well be. Having her back in his arms, pressed against his erection, was all he wanted. He wanted to take her fast and hard, but this wasn’t the time or place. He’d forsake everything to have her back safe. He broke free, both of them panting from pent-up desire.

“I need to know you understand that I will do whatever it takes to be near you. Even if I can only have a stolen moment. If Lucifer wants to punish me, I’ll take it.” He dropped his forehead to hers. “He can’t hurt me any more than he’s already done by taking you from me. I will not let him have you.” She pushed against his chest, and he freed her.

“I have to go,” she whispered.

“I will find a way, Ashley. We belong together, and I will find a way to free you,” he shouted as she faded away. All eyes were on him, but he didn’t care. Let his brethren believe he’d finally gone mad.

Set in the same world as Meg Collett’s bestselling End of Days series comes the darkly comedic paranormal serial spin-off series, Days of New.

“Clark was human, Nephil, Descendant. He was good and bad. He was the dirty magic of evil angels. He was still the pink-haired kid who had fallen into a cave and found a broken angel. He was a reaper and a savior. A lost boy who just wanted his friends to stop dying.”

Zarachiel is a broken holy angel who just wants to save people. The pain from his torn out wings reminds him everyday just how far the holy angels have fallen from grace. Like it is his burden to bear, he sets out to right their wrongs every day.

Clark wants to save the person he loves most in the world, but she doesn’t want his help or his love. Unlike Zarachiel, who saves everyone he can, Clark can’t seem to save even one person.

Peace can be as deadly as war, and someone won’t survive.
