Blurb

Marry me for 1 year. Payment: $1.2 million.

Hayden Somerset is convinced the ad is a joke, but he responds anyway because, hello, $1.2 million. He’s broke, living in a tiny apartment with two roommates, and exhausted from praying his ancient car survives just one more week. His skyrocketing rent and crushing student loans aren’t helping either. At this point, there isn’t much Hayden wouldn’t do for that kind of cash.

The ad isn’t a joke. Jesse Ambrose is absolutely serious. His father, the charismatic patriarch of a powerful Hollywood dynasty, has his eye on politics, and he’s counting on California’s liberals and progressives to elect him. But Jesse knows what his father believes when cameras and voters aren’t around. As the election looms, he’ll do anything to force the man’s hand and show the public who Isaac Ambrose really is.

Anything, including marrying a stranger so his father will make good on his promise to disown Jesse if he ever takes a husband.

Now he just has to wait for his father to take the bait… and try not to accidentally fall in love with his fake husband.

Carra's Review

You kind of know going into a fake husband trope story what’s going to happen on the romance side of things when it’s in the romance category, right?  It’s how the author is going to get you there, and what other factors there are in the plot for the characters to get through that makes the ride unique and interesting.  Here that major factor is Jesse’s homophobic father, and his threat to disown Jesse if he ever marries a man—a situation made more compelling since his father’s entering the political realm on the liberal side…which Jesse knows is a total crock.

Hayden’s the lucky guy who answers Jesse’s ad for a husband-for-hire.  Sure, he’s doing it for those dollar signs—Hayden knows what it’s like to not have much, and here’s a chance for some stability.  That Hayden does know what it’s like to be without means he’s careful with what he has, and that gives a very humble quality to his personality.  Jesse is the complete opposite, growing up in a family of Hollywood royalty…which means he doesn’t understand Hayden’s attitude about money (or anything money can buy).  This does cause a little bit of friction between them until Jesse realizes why Hayden sees things the way he does.

Their families are as opposite as can be—even more than Hayden and Jesse are.  Jesse’s family…or at least most of them…are motivated by greed and power—especially his father.  And his mother is at best indifferent to his father’s opinions of Jesse’s sexual orientation.  Hayden’s family, well they actually care about each other—even Hayden’s brother who he’s not at all close with anymore.

The writing was good as I’ve always found it to be with this author’s books, though to me this story did feel longer than it needed to be in order to get its point across.  The relationship between Hayden and Jesse is slow burn, with plenty of time for them to get to know each other before things change between them.  And as money tends to do, it causes strain and the questioning of what’s really on one’s conscience.

The Husband Gambit was a 4-star read for me, and if you’re a fan of this trope (or just M/M contempoary romance in general) then I’d definitely recommend it.  This book is meant for readers 18+ for adult language and sexual content.

Author Bio

L.A. Witt is an abnormal M/M romance writer who has finally been released from the purgatorial corn maze of Omaha, Nebraska, and now spends her time on the southwestern coast of Spain. In between wondering how she didn’t lose her mind in Omaha, she explores the country with her husband, several clairvoyant hamsters, and an ever-growing herd of rabid plot bunnies. She also has substantially more time on her hands these days, as she has recruited a small army of mercenaries to search South America for her nemesis, romance author Lauren Gallagher, but don’t tell Lauren. And definitely don’t tell Lori A. Witt or Ann Gallagher. Neither of those twits can keep their mouths shut…
