Prologue

Casey stared down at the letter in her hand, swallowing hard. Carefully folding the legal document, she placed it back in the envelope and onto the kitchen table, where she stared at it, silently debating how to handle the dilemma.

The person responsible for turning her world upside down thought she was without options. He was mistaken. She had a way of dealing with him so she would never have to fear him again.

However, if she went through with her plan, it would place her life in danger. She could lose the ones closest to her. Casey bit her lip. Was she strong enough to face the fear she had avoided for years?

Searching through her purse, she found the card in her wallet that she had shoved there months before. Taking a shuddering breath, she dialed the number, and a male voice answered.

“This is Casey Harris. Do you remember me?”

“Hi, Casey. Of course I remember you. What can I do for you?”

“Is your offer still open?”

“Yes, have you reconsidered?”

Casey paused. Then, before she could change her mind, she blurted out her answer. “If I help you out, then I’m going to need something in return.”

“We don’t pay informants.” His amicable voice went cold.

“It’s not money I want,” Casey denied hastily.

“What do you want, then?”

“I’ll tell you when we meet.”

“What if I can’t do it?”

“Then neither one of us will be getting what we want.” Casey made her voice firm.

“Meet me in an hour at the coffee shop on Elk Street.”

“I’ll be there.” Casey disconnected the call, laying her cell phone back down on the table with trembling fingers.

She had actually done it. Even though she had been left with no choice, it still bothered her that she would be betraying those who trusted her. 

Casey stared at the picture on her wall, dispelling her doubts. The choice had been taken out of her hands.

Standing, she picked up her purse and the letter. To get the help she desperately needed, she was going to have to do something that several law enforcement agencies, rival clubs, and victims had tried to do for years without success. The Predators were finally going to be brought to justice. 

Her eyes were caught by the picture again. If she didn’t succeed, she wouldn’t be the only one paying the price with their life.

"I was born in a small town in Kentucky. My family began poor, but worked their way to owning a restaurant. My mother was one of the best cooks I have ever known, and she instilled in all her children the value of hard work, and education.

Taking after my mother, I've always love to cook, and became pretty good if I do say so myself. I love to experiment and my unfortunate family has suffered through many. They now have learned to steer clear of those dishes. I absolutely love the holidays and my family puts up with my zany decorations.

For now, my days are spent writing, writing, and writing. I have two children who both graduated this year from college. My daughter does my book covers, and my son just tries not to blush when someone asks him about my books.

Currently I am writing five series of books- The Last Riders, The VIP Room, Predators MC, Biker Bitches, and The Dark Souls.

As Raven faded away, I turn to look at Chax. Although Chax was our leader, his short temper always seemed to doom a situation. His green eyes pierced mine as he regained his footing and pulled out his sword.

“There are more ways to deal with something than just force, Chax.” I smirked at him.

“Agreed, but not in Raven’s case.” Chax brought his sword in front of him, determined to get the weapon he needed to bring down Lucifer.

“She is still a fallen, and in my care. I will not let her be harmed in any way.” I stepped a little to the left, bringing my body to a perfect counter position.

“So, you choose her side rather than our cause?” Chax accused me.

“Please, I am not one of your little fallen apprentices. I chose the right path, the one without hurting an innocent girl.” I steadied the weight of my body on the balls of my feet, and secured my position.

“I migh-“ Chax was cut off by something crashing through my office wall.

“Where is she? Where is that hellhound?” an even more intoxicated Camael yelled while trying to stay upright.

“You have got to be kidding me!” At the sound of Chax’s pained words, my eyes flew in his direction, and I lifted my eyebrows at his statement.

He blushed a little. “Too much time with my mate,” he replied.

“I see,” I replied and caught Camael before his face ended up in my chair.

“What the hell are you doing, Camael?!” Chax replaced his sword and grabbed Camael on the other side.

“That hellhound needs a lesson in respect.” Camael’s words slurred with his heavy tongue.

“He needs to be healed, Chax. Is there no one who can help?” I was worried for my old friend; he was not doing well at all.

“No, not even the visits in heaven seem to be helping, although I might have an idea we can test.” Chax grabbed Camael on the shoulder and forced him to sit down. His head hung backwards as his dark eyes looked up and tried to focus on us.

“If it might work, we need to try it. He is unable to fulfill his duties in this state.” A bitter taste was left in my mouth. I didn’t like what I was seeing at all.

“What about Raven?” Chax asked.

“I will find her, and I will let her take me to him. The moment I have him in sight, I will notify all of you.” My eyes drifted to Chax.

“And you think that you will be able to persuade her to help us trap him?” Chax frowned.

“Yes, but she will not know that she is doing it. I will steer her the way we need her to go.” Chax nodded and grabbed hold of Camael.

“Do that then, but if you fail, it will be my way, Zadkiel.” He shifted out, taking Camael with him.

Her hands come up from their spot on her lap and extend to touch my face at the same time as I look down. At that movement, my heart splits completely in two. Half of it is screaming at me to run as far away as I can. The other half is begging me to stay, to let her touch me, to let her see the real me so that maybe I can become some semblance of a man rather than just the shell of one. It’s a constant battle within myself. Keep her at arm’s length? Let her get close enough to hurt the both of us? Is there any way to walk away from this unscathed? I’m not sure, but I’ve never needed anything in this world like I need her touch right now.

She places both her hands on either side of my neck and her thumbs graze my cheek as she says softly, “What happened to you?”

I look up just in time to see her eyes mist over.

Beyond the obvious emotions—pain, pity, confusion, I see something else. Something much deeper.

Something that will either make or break us both.

There’s a yearning in her gaze. I see it. I feel it. I want it. I want her to want me, and I know she does. As wrong as all of this is, as much as I know this is going to end badly, I know I can’t walk away now. It’s gone too far, we’re in too deep, and we haven’t even scratched the surface of whatever is brewing between us.

She’s a Latin spitfire, a firecracker. Her beauty is unmatched, her mere presence shedding light on the impenetrable darkness that’s surrounded me.

She’s my anchor. When my world is spinning on its axis, she keeps me centered.

And I know without even thinking about it that I’ve fallen for her. Hook, line, and sinker.

There’s a tether between us, and each time we encounter each other, every time we spend a night in each other’s arms, it pulls us closer together. And although I should want it to sever and fall to the ground, I don’t.

My Review

I'm always a huge fan of the friends-to-more trope, and Cindi Madsen nails this one perfectly.  With writing that flowed so well I just flew through the story, I was wrapped up in this cute and sweet tale of Lyla and her quest to fulfill a "college bucket list".  With the help of her best friend Beck of course...

Lyla is an adorable, nerdy type who wants to give herself a bit of a makeover-a little bit in looks, and a whole lot in attitude. She enlists the help of her best friend, Beck-a hot, sexy, smart hockey player with his own personal issues that he really doesn't want to share.  They have fun checking off the items on her list, and while doing that become closer and develop feelings they weren't expecting-and which neither wants to admit to.

The chemistry between Lyla and Beck is remarkable, and the sexual tension keeps building until Beck offers to help Lyla with #7 on her list...to have "mind-blowing sex".  At that point, that tension between them just explodes.

This story is a classic example of how to do a friends-to-more story just right, with plenty of buildup, a great release, some nail-biting conflict once Beck's personal issues roar to the forefront, and an ending that will have you cheering.  Bonus points from me for telling the story from both Lyla and Beck's points of view, something I love since we get a much richer story hearing from both sides.
