I'm told Nethermire House is haunted, but the truth is even stranger.

Blurb

Nethermire is home to an eccentric 80-year-old and the young man she claims is her great-nephew.

Except he's not.

He's a demon.

Brin's chaotic, bratty ways draw me to him. When he calls me Daddy, I'm a goner. I want to protect him, take care of him, and call him mine.

But when he gets summoned to hell, our happiness is shattered.

Can I recall him to my side, or will I lose him forever?

Recalling My Demon is a standalone MM paranormal romance in the Possessive Love multi-author series. It has an age-gap relationship between a bratty demon who needs someone to love him more than he realises and an ex-priest who's now a Daddy.

Excerpt

“Nurse Ian.” He raises his thick, dark brows a fraction, his eyes sparkling as he smirks. “Mo—Martha has told me all about you.” His voice is soft, light, and playful.

“You’re her grand-nephew?”

“Brin.” He flicks his gaze over me. “You are gorgeous.”

I take a half step back. “Uh—”

“I shouldn’t have said that, should I?” He runs his thumb over his bottom lip. “I’d apologise, except it’s true. Hm, you are one gorgeous man.”

So is he. I swallow, needing to maintain my composure and remain professional. “Martha is through here.” I gesture to the lounge.

“She likes that room. Have you seen the rest of the house? I could give you a tour.”

“No, I haven’t.”

Brin flounces into the house, kicks his boots off, and wanders into the lounge. I follow in his wake. He leans down to kiss his great-aunt on the forehead, grabs a cake off the plate, and sits in a chair with one leg looped over the arm. He peels the case away from the cake and takes a big bite. Crumbs drop onto his chin, so he flicks his tongue out to lick them off.

“Ian is here to do my welfare check,” Martha explains.

“I guessed.” Brin stares at me as he devours the rest of the cake.

I can’t take my eyes off him.

“Don’t let me stop you from doing your job. I love watching a man in uniform work.” He winks.

“You’ll have to forgive him. My grand-nephew is a terrible flirt,” Martha says.

I scrabble to get the blood pressure monitor out of my bag and kneel beside Martha.

“A man in uniform on his knees. Sexy.”

“Brin,” Martha says, her tone not as sharp and short as I’d expect for a true admonishment.

“What? It’s true.”

Carra's Review

Brin is absolutely a naughty one.  But in his defense, he really doesn’t know any better given his situation.  He’s forthright and goes for what he wants.  Ian is a bit more reserved, particularly given his background, but once he finally gives himself the green light, it’s a whole other ballgame.

I did find Brin to be a perfect fit for the role of a boy given his somewhat bratty nature, plus his relatively sheltered upbringing.  Ian is just the right Daddy for him though, and while some may feel like things moved quickly for them, the story actually plays out over time .  The two of them make an excellent match, both in the bedroom and out.

This story is pretty lighthearted and an easy, quick read.  The bit of excitement comes in the last third once Brin is pulled back to hell, and Ian has to figure out how to get him back.  If you go into this without the expectation of anything deep or profound, you’ll find yourself enjoying a playful boy and a Daddy trying to keep him in line.

At just over 200 pages, I read Recalling My Demon in an afternoon and found it to be a fun story.  If you’re looking for something light and love a bratty, straightforward boy then this book will fit the bill.  Recommended for readers 18+ for adult language and sexual content.

Star-Crossed Celestials, Prequel

The line between angel and demon is razor thin. No one knows this better than Kai.

As an Emissary of death, darkness follows Kai like a shadow, leaving him touch-starved and lonely. Tormented by the error in judgment that killed his only love, he accepts an assignment to redeem himself: hunting down the demons destroying the mortal realm. But fate takes a turn, and Kai finds himself drawn to one of his targets instead.

Demonic martial arts expert Byron Black has struggled to survive his entire life. He has fought for every breath he’s taken and each bite he’s eaten, yet in the instant when his demise finally seems inevitable, death incarnate steps forward and spares him. Kai is as beautiful as he is terrifying, and although Byron suspects the angel’s interest in him is more than it appears, he can’t stay away.

Together, the pair search for answers regarding who wants Byron dead—and why—but uncovering the truth might destroy them both in the process. Can Kai defeat his inner demons to save the one that has crawled into his bed?

MALAKAI

It wasn’t a demotion. Oberon had said so himself. It wasn’t a punishment, either.

But as Kai shifted on the rusty metal bench, watching the figures trading jabs in the dusty pit before him, it certainly felt like both.

“This is what passes for entertainment in the mortal realm?” he asked the portly male to his left.

For a moment, Nash offered no reply. Kai was unsure if his companion had even heard him. The other male simply stared at the scene below with fascination, carefully following each swing and swift kick exchanged. His hand moved at his side absentmindedly, imitating the quick cutting motions and stabbing thrusts, and he licked his lips with longing, as if he ached to be sparring alongside the fighters.

Finally, Nash glanced at Kai, beholding him as though he were a distraction—a gnat or a fly circling his head.

“Entertainment, yes. For some, anyway.” He blinked and turned back to the match. His hand motions resumed immediately. “For you, however, this is training,” he added without meeting Kai’s stare.

“Training …” Kai echoed, unimpressed.

Crossing his arms over his wide, muscular chest, he watched the figures in the pit continue to attack each other. Blood and sweat dripped from their brows. One fighter’s eye was so swollen from a punch he could barely hold it open. And his opponent seemed to be favoring his left leg, his ankle injured, perhaps.

“Yet it seems so … uncivilized,” Kai mused. His voice was low and soft, barely more than a dull rumble. He’d learned centuries ago that he had no need to speak louder. A murmur was formidable enough when paired with his stark features and dark wings.

“It’s supposed to be uncivilized.” Nash snorted. If Kai’s voice was velvet, his had all the grace of a fraying burlap sack. “It’s demonic martial arts, not the Seraphim ballet.”

“And what, exactly, am I meant to be learning from the demons? I have means of destruction at my disposal that far surpass the strength of any punch or kick.”

As though to prove Kai’s point about demonic inadequacy, one of the fighters promptly took a hard kick to the jaw, spun dazedly, and fell to the ground, spitting blood and teeth. He wallowed in the dirt while the seconds ticked by, chest heaving as he gasped for air. Cheers and clapping rose from the surrounding bleachers, the audience pleased with the turn of events.

Surprisingly, Nash seemed to be right. The spectators truly did find this entertaining.

“You are meant to study the way the demons move. Learn their tricks. Understand the cunning in their ways,” Nash replied.

When the fallen demon slowly drew himself back up to his feet, the crowd let out another roar of approval. The fighter dragged his bare forearm across his mouth, smearing the blood from his cracked lip, then snarled and crouched, poised to launch a counteroffensive on his opponent. His eyes changed color—a blazing amber roiling in his irises. Briefly, a pair of black horns curled up along his hairline to crown him. Then, as he regained his focus, they disappeared, and the demon could almost pass for human once more.

“With all due respect, chancellor, I can take life with a single touch,” Kai said. “I hardly think any of these creatures is a match for me.”

“You may kill with a single touch, Malakai, but will you be able to get close enough to place hands on one of these monsters? That, I doubt.”

Nash’s annoyance was more pronounced now, and a scowl crept across his face. Kai watched the celestial’s profile as he leaned forward in his seat a bit more, redoubling his efforts to focus on the match. He could not have made his lack of interest in anything Kai had to say more apparent than if he’d spoken the words out loud himself.

Kai could take a hint. It was one of the lessons that being more than a millennium old had taught him. He faced forward once more, turning his own attention back to the fight. Although he would never admit it aloud, perhaps Nash had a point. The demons had a way of inflicting maximum injury with minimal contact. Their fighting style relied greatly on push kicks and parrying, not headlocks or nelson holds. They didn’t let their opponent get close enough for such close contact.

This was no concern to Kai, though. Not really, anyway. He was an Emissary, a harbinger of death. If one method failed him, he’d make do with another—his celestial-made sword, perhaps, or the sickly green vapor he could summon when needed. Demons were more difficult to dispatch than mortals. Half-human and half-celestial, they typically inherited their celestial parent’s impressive healing capabilities. A cut could heal within minutes, a broken bone within hours. They could not contract human diseases, and unless wounded with stardust-imbued metals—such as Kai’s sword—they would live indefinitely.

But demons had a weakness they shared with neither of their parents: their souls … or, rather, their lack thereof.

Souls were delicate. They needed to be preserved in mortals so they could withstand their journey to the afterlife.

 Carra's Review

As a prequel to the Star-Crossed Celestials series, Emissary can be read without reading the other stories since it takes place before them.  I have not read the other books, and had no problem following along and understanding the world in which this story takes place.  And that world?  It’s hard, rough, and perilous if you are a demon or even just part demon, or if you are a Watcher.  Most are hunted and killed for being what they are, regardless if they are “bad” - they are tainted just due to the fact of their birth.

Kai is an Emissary of Death; Emissaries and Messengers are the warriors who hunt and take the lives of demons, Watchers, and anyone the stars dictate as destined for death.  Problem is, when Kai consults the stars about Byron being on his list of targets?  The stars say no, it’s not his time.  This contradiction with his orders triggers a major conflict, putting Kai and Byron on the run, looking for answers while just trying to stay alive.  There’s more to discover, and the journey is tense, exciting, and fraught with danger.

What that journey also brings is time for the two to get to know each other, grow closer, and eventually form a strong connection.  Their relationship is complicated due to what they each are - a demon and an Emissary - but Kai becomes intensely attached to Byron anyway, even when those feelings evoke pain and sadness thanks to how Kai’s previous relationship ended.

This was an intriguing story, and did keep me on edge for the majority of the book.  For the first quarter or so, it did take me a little bit to get hooked in, but after that it definitely held my attention.  The closer Kai and Byron grew, and the closer they came to uncovering what was really going on, the deeper I was pulled into the story.

Overall, Emissary was a 4.5-star read for me.  If you love paranormal/fantasy stories with a nice dose of heat plus the added bonus of opposites attract, this story will be right up your alley.  I’ve already added the other books from this series to my TBR, and can’t wait to dive in.  Emissary is meant for readers 18+ for adult language and sexual content.

Cal and his brothers turned their backs on the family business over a hundred years ago – but Hell is tired of waiting for them to return.

Cal

But one look in Oscar’s broken eyes and I know I’m in trouble.  Oscar’s been hurt before and everything in me is screaming to keep him safe. How can I do that when I know being with me will only put him in more danger?

More importantly though, am I strong enough to walk away from him?

Oscar

After escaping my last relationship with broken bones and an anxiety disorder, I’m tired of living half a life. My world revolves around my classroom, flat, and best friend. When fate throws Cal in my path, he seems too good to be true. Not only does he look like he’s been pulled from my fantasies, but my baggage doesn’t scare him. Ok, so there’s the tiny issue of him being a demon, but I’ve dealt with far scarier.

I’ve been broken once before, and I don’t think I’d survive it again. Can I pull down my barriers enough to let Cal in?

Devil’s Mark is a thrilling high heat, hurt/comfort, M/M contemporary paranormal romance with a HEA and no cliff-hanger. Excerpt

There was a dead body in my bookshop.

Again.

Tossed on the floor in front of the romance section, the crumpled corpse was ruining my new Venetian rug. I suppressed a sigh. I’d only replaced the sodding thing yesterday after the last unwanted delivery.

And why always in front of the romances? If I were to dump a body in a bookshop, I’d try to be more poetic. True crime, war, even biographies would provide a delicious touch of irony. But no, these morons always chose the romance section.

Perhaps I wasn’t giving them enough credit. Maybe they believed romance was dead and thought this was a nice nod to that idea? It was a philosophy I wholeheartedly believed in…but I doubted whoever was sending me these messages was that intelligent.

They wouldn’t have decided to play with me in the first place if they were. My brothers and I had spent the last week trying to track down the culprit, but whoever it was had covered their tracks too well. I wasn’t concerned though. They would slip up sooner or later.

Dealing with these little gifts first thing in the morning was becoming irksome. Toeing the corpse with the tip of my dress shoe, I wrinkled my nose. As with the others, there was nothing to distinguish who they were. All I could tell was that he was human and male.

Oh, and headless.

The gaping wound at the neck was still leaking, ensuring my rug was well and truly ruined. Satan forbid whoever dumped them in my shop could wait until they finished bleeding out first.

Rubbing a hand over my tired eyes, I decided my guest could wait until I had been sufficiently caffeinated. I trudged to the coffee machine behind the counter and began to whip up a latte, my hands moving through the actions automatically. I’d initially scoffed when my brother, Harlow, had it delivered. After all, I’d survived a millennia without succumbing to such mundane stimulants as coffee to get through my day. I’d left the gargantuan chrome-and-steel beast to collect dust on the shelf.

And that’s exactly what it did—until I brought home two very enthusiastic twinks from The Closet, the club owned by my brother, Mori. Faced with choosing between another round in the sheets or grabbing a few hours’ kip, I made the only sane choice for a demon.

As I’d ushered the boys out my door at sunrise, honeyed lies pouring from my lips—Yes, my darlings. I promise I will call you—I received a message from Mori about a coven of vamps making threats. Suddenly regretting my choices, I turned to Harlow’s gift with a scowl. After watching several YouTube videos, I wrestled the monster into submission and taught myself how to make a semi-palatable coffee. It took several burns to get there, but I was raised on flames hotter than anything that blasted machine could throw at me.

That had been five years ago, and now I was hooked. I couldn’t even fathom starting my day without stopping for a coffee first—dead bodies or not.

Carra's Review

Sometimes I read a book and when someone asks me for a recommendation in the genre that book is in, I say, “here, read this, you’ll love it—trust me”.  No reasons or detailing specifics—just go read this because I said so, and it’s all because that book was a really enjoyable read in a genre I love.  Devil’s Mark falls into this category.  I loved the story, I loved the characters, and I finished it already anticipating the next in the series.

Debut book for this author?  Color me impressed—and you’ll want to put this author on your “authors to watch” list.  Complex characters that are so easy to become invested in, an intriguing and emotional storyline, plus some awesomely quirky demons?  Yes, please.

Hurt/comfort, fated mates, plus some amazing supporting characters are also on the table here, so I was absolutely sucked in from the start.  Cal and Oscar fit perfectly together, and I loved how protective and caring Cal was.  Cal owning a bookstore was a bonus.

This story was an excellent read, and is getting 4.5 stars from me.  The fact that I know I have Cal’s brothers Harlow, Mori, and Dagon to look forward to in future books?  I’m giddy just thinking about it.  I can’t wait to see what’s in store with them.  But first, you need to read Devil’s Mark so you can enjoy Cal and Oscar just as much as I did.  This story is meant for readers 18+ for adult language and sexual content.

Synopsis

The devil you know is never the one you should trust.

Special Agent Patrick Collins is dispatched to Chicago, chasing a lead on the Morrígan’s staff for the joint task force. Needing a cover for his presence in the Windy City, Patrick is ordered to investigate a politician running for mayor. In the lead up to election day, not everything is what it seems in a city where playing to win means appeasing the gods first and the electorate second.

But Chicago brings its own set of problems outside the case: a stand-offish local god pack, a missing immortal, and Patrick’s twin sister. Fighting Hannah and the Dominion Sect provides Patrick with a sinister reminder that some blood ties can never be cut.

Left behind in New York City, Jonothon de Vere finds himself targeted by hunters who will go through anyone to kill him—including the packs under his protection. With a bounty on his head, Jono is forced to make a choice that Patrick would never approve of. Doing so risks breaking the trust he’s built with the man he loves, but not acting will give the rival New York City god pack leverage Jono can’t afford to give up.

When Patrick and Jono reunite in Chicago, Patrick must confront the fraying of a relationship he’s come to rely on for his own sanity. But fixing their personal problems will have to wait—because Niflheim is clawing at the shores of Lake Michigan and the dead are hungry.

A Vigil in the Mourning is a 102k word m/m urban fantasy with a gay romantic subplot and a HFN ending. It is a direct sequel to A Crown of Iron & Silver. Reading the first book in the series would be helpful in enjoying this one.

Praise for A Vigil in the Mourning (Soulbound #4)

Patrick and Jono fight for their lives, tangling with Norse gods and monsters, while their relationship is strained by secrets and separation, in another exciting, deliciously angsty ride from Turner's Soulbound series. — Layla Reyne, author of the Fog City Trilogy

VIGIL IN MOURNING takes the Soulbound series a step further into stellar story crafting. A change in scenery for Patrick and a separation from his soulmate raises the stakes, and cliches are deftly avoided and expectations shattered as the central love story becomes fraught with tension. Each plot twist leaves the reader gasping and clinging to the pages, and I was not expecting that ending. Jono and Patrick lead an ensemble cast of characters that includes a snack obsessed dragon, a seer with a sarcasm problem, and gods that can't help but meddle. Patrick's snarktastic attitude leaves me laughing and terrified at the trouble he calls down.  — SJ Himes, bestselling author

Excerpt

The curtains were open, allowing them to see the lit-up Chicago skyline. Patrick dropped his backpack on the other bed before approaching the window and staring out at the view for a few seconds. Then he pulled the curtains shut.

“Unpack and get ready for bed. I need to be at the local field office at 0800 tomorrow, and I want to sleep,” Patrick said.

“But I’m still hungry,” Wade whined.

Patrick sighed and headed for the nightstand that separated the two double beds. He picked up the phone, checked which extension was room service on the little welcome booklet, then looked at Wade. “What do you want?”

Wade smiled smugly, looking pleased with himself now that he was getting his third meal of the night. “A hamburger. Two of them. With extra fries. Oh, and dessert. Cheesecake if they have it.”

Patrick had a feeling he was going to run through his allotted travel stipend for food within the first twenty-four hours of being in Chicago. He wondered if Setsuna would accept kept fledgling dragon fed so he didn’t eat the locals as an excuse for reimbursements.

Carra's Review

I’m running out of ways to express just how much I’m loving this series.  In many ongoing series, you usually find that the first book is the best, then the quality starts to drop off after that.  Not so with Hailey Turner’s Soulbound series…each book just keeps getting better and pulling me even more into this incredible world she’s created.  This time?  It’s time to bring the Norse pantheon into the mix…so yes, that means Odin, Thor, and a whole lot more.

Poor Patrick…he and his growing pack keep winding up smack in the middle of this war amongst the gods, and the stakes keep getting higher.  Ms. Turner has really done her research well, and it’s evident in every story.  I was completely drawn in, and as cliché as it might be to say, I was on the edge of my seat through every page.  I thought the setup of the Norse gods in Chicago was interesting, though I wasn’t expecting the twist to the political machinations.

With the introduction of the new pantheon, there are plenty of new and exciting characters along with many returning favorites.  I was particularly fond of the valkyries :-)  There were not only new characters with Patrick’s new case, but also in the continuing—and escalating—issues between his and Jono’s pack and the other god pack in New York City.  New vampires, new pack additions…and new baddies.

Tension is high on just about every page, not just with the case and the pack issues, but with Patrick and Jono as well.  Even so, their bond and relationship keep becoming deeper and stronger.  The story keeps the excitement level high too, and you can’t help but fall down the rabbit hole while reading.  Who needs sleep anyway, right?

A Vigil in the Mourning absolutely get every star, and continues to keep the entire series as a Top Recommendation for me.  I do strongly recommend you read this series in order as events do build upon each other, and you will want the background to fully understand all the aspects of the story.  The adult language and sexual content do mean that this book is meant for readers 18+.
