Length: 57,000 words approx

Cover Design: Meredith Russell

Blurb

Can Tennant show Jared that age is just a number, and that love is all that matters?

The Rowe Brothers are famous hockey hotshots, but as the youngest of the trio, Tennant has always had to play against his brothers' reputations. To get out of their shadows, and against their advice, he accepts a trade to the Harrisburg Railers, where he runs into Jared Madsen. Mads is an old family friend and his brother's one-time teammate. Mads is Tennant's new coach. And Mads is the sexiest thing he's ever laid eyes on.

Jared Madsen's hockey career was cut short by a fault in his heart, but coaching keeps him close to the game. When Ten is traded to the team, his carefully organized world is thrown into chaos. Nine years younger and his best friend's brother, he knows Ten is strictly off-limits, but as soon as he sees Ten's moves, on and off the ice, he knows his heart could get him into trouble again.

Carra's Review

I’m already a huge fan of RJ Scott’s books, but this is my first time being exposed to VL Locey.  Changing Lines has a few different elements that I love—age gap, coming out, brother’s best friend, and hockey romance…all rolled up into one.  For the age gap, the difference is only nine years, but that’s enough to show a distinct difference in the two main characters.  As to the coming out, there’s not just coming out to family, but also to a professional sports team—something that can cause a huge stir-up even in today’s world.  Honestly, given the multitude of topics featured in the story, I found it to be relatively angst-free which I thought was a bit surprising.

Tennant Rowe is an adult, though still young—and it does show with his Pokemon playing and his more impatient attitude towards his relationship with Mads.  He’s supremely talented out on the ice, and is very sure of himself…not cocky, but definitely quite confident.  Jared Madsen is no longer playing hockey—though not by choice thanks to his heart—instead he’s coaching the same team that Ten ends up on, although not coaching Ten directly.  Mads clearly shows his maturity in relation to both the game as well as his and Ten’s relationship.  He’s a good balance to Ten, and keeps things from going too fast.

When it comes to their relationship, I found that there wasn’t a lot of on-page development—it was more implied and glossed over in favor of the scenes of Ten coming out to his different family members.  I would have liked to have seen more of their evolving relationship and how Ten’s coming out affects his team, though I’m wondering if it may be touched on in future books in the series even if his and Mads’ relationship is not the focus of those books.

With the very low angst level and the overly easy way Ten and Mads’ relationship seemed to blossom, Changing Lines is falling between a 3.5 and 4 star rating for me.  It has piqued my interest for the rest of the series, so I’ll definitely be hanging around to see where these authors take me.  If you’re a fan of hockey romance you’ll find this to be a good story to add to your collection, just don’t expect a lot of drama while you read it.  This story is for readers 18+ for adult language and sexual content.

James failed.
He tried to be what they wanted.
He tried to deny it.
He tried to be a good Catholic boy…but it’s become too much.
He craves pain, submission.
He’s denied himself far too long, and it’s eating him alive.

Charles thrives off the exchange of power. He knows the world revolves around control. It’s given and taken like currency, in business and in pleasure. He won’t get attached, though, or so he tells himself, until James turns his world upside down. He’s defiant and snarky, but Charles can taste the submission on him.

Charles holds the key to his salvation but James has to Say Yes.

What are other authors saying about Say Yes?

Author Kerry Heavens says: “Yes - to the delicious slow burn which goes head to head with an intense urgency. Yes - to James' soft vulnerability that meets its match in Charles' steely determination. Yes - to the forbidden vs the shameless. Yes - to more...I'm saying YES!”

Excerpt

Inside the dressing room, Charles caught James by the tie and yanked him closer. James stood without a hint of fear. With his reputation, there weren’t many left who didn’t fear him.
“Why don’t you stay?” It had to be voluntary. There was nothing if it wasn’t. Any man could get off on force. He wanted the control freely given. It was so much more erotic.
“Need help putting your d*ck in your pants?” James’ lips curled up a hint.
“I was thinking more along the lines of help with you on your knees.” He stared at the tie on James’ neck. Charles wanted to string him up with it. It had been a long time since he’d let loose with a man.
“I think I’ll ruin my suit if I kneel in here.” He was witty. Another point in his favor.
James was quite a bit younger than Charles was, but he made up for it in cocky. His dirty blond hair fell into his eyes, enough for Charles to grab a handful of. Even if he’d never preferred blonds, there was a first time for everything.
“All the more reason not to be wearing it.”
“It’s my job to get you out of your suit, not for you to get me out of mine.” His dark green eyes shone in the low light behind rectangular glasses. He had such a thing for glasses. Charles knew he was being toyed with. It was an unusual sensation for him as he usually did the toying.
“It’s not going to be any work at all for you to get me out of my suit. I think yours will be the challenge.”

When not staying up all night writing, J.R. Gray can be found at the gym where it's half assumed he is a permanent resident to fulfill his self-inflicted masochism. A dominant and a pilot, Gray finds it hard to be in the passenger seat of any car. He frequently interrupts real life, including normal sleep patterns and conversations, to jot down notes or plot bunnies. Commas are the bane of his existence even though it's been fully acknowledged they are necessary, they continue to baffle and bewilder. If Gray wasn't writing…well, that's not possible. The buildup of untold stories would haunt Gray into an early grave, insanity or both. The idea of haunting has always appealed to him. J.R. Gray is genderqueer and prefers he/him pronouns.

“No, you can’t go there. A monster lives there.”

Excerpt

Great. I was lost. Shading my hand over my eyes, I decided the far right should take me in the general direction I wanted to go. So I went that way, only to end up at the edge of the house, but not where I’d started, and not close enough to the rose garden to get me inside.
Strangely enough, however, a boy played outside, using sidewalk chalk to color a picture of…what the hell was he drawing? Maybe some kind of dying animal with blood gushing from its side and an arrow sticking out of its back.
It didn’t look right, whatever it was.
I shook my head and jerked my gaze from the disturbingly morbid sketch. “Hey, kid.”
The boy jumped and looked up, hopping to his feet and backing away from me as I were the scary one.
No idea who he was; he looked too young to be Mr. Nash’s son from the photos I’d seen, plus he had white blond hair, the complete opposite shade of the young man in all the pictures in Mr. Nash’s office. But he was here, so he’d have to do.
Wanting to appear as non-threatening as possible, I smile and waved. “Hey. Sorry for bothering you, but do you know how to get to the rose garden?”
That must’ve been the wrong question to ask. His face drained of color. “No,” he said, shaking his head. “You can’t go there.”
What? “Why not?”
“A monster lives in there. Half her face is melted off. She eats the thorns from the roses so she can spit them at people, stabbing them in the neck to slice their throat open until they bleed out and die.”
O…kay.
Somehow, I’d stumbled across one of the children of the corn. Nice.
Lifting my eyebrows, I drew my own step in reverse. Time to retreat. “Dude, that’s gruesome.”
Please don’t kill me. Please don’t kill me. Please don’t kill me.
He gave a serious nod. “It’s true. My mom’ll tell you she’s real too.”
“Oh yeah?” Relieved he wasn’t claiming he’d sprouted from Satan’s cabbage patch but actually had a mother, I glanced around for this wise, all-knowing parent of his. Maybe she could tell me how to get to the conservatory. “Who’s your mom?”
“The cook,” he said, puffing up his chest as if that were the most important title in the house. “She’s worked here for fifteen years. She knows everything about this place there is to know. So…don’t go into the roses. You won’t come out alive. Lewis, the groundskeeper, doesn’t even go in there.”
Aha! So this place did have a gardener. I knew it.
I took a second to ponder why I was being sent to garden then, when Mr. Nash already paid someone to maintain the place. But if Lewis refused to go into the roses, as the kid had said, maybe it was rumored to be haunted or something, and that was where I came in. Then again, why wouldn’t Mr. Nash just hire a new groundskeeper who wasn’t so scared and superstitious? Then I stopped pondering the whys. It wasn’t my place to question strange, rich people and their strange, oddball orders. I was just here to do what I was told and save my mom.
Nodding gravely to the boy, I said, “Thanks for the warning, kid. But I think I’ll take my chances. Which way?”
He looked at me as if he’d never see me again because I was headed forth to my death, then he lifted his hand and quietly pointed toward another opening in the path of bushes.
“Thanks.” I nodded and got out of there before some of his creepiness started rubbing off.
Fortunately, he’d steered me in the right direction. I landed right at the outdoor entrance into the glass gazebo. Propping the door open, I carted my supplies inside and then paused to breathe deeply.
But f*ck me, it smelled good in here. You didn’t have to be a flower enthusiast for this garden to amaze you. It was like the holy shrine of roses. A hallowed kind of reverence filled my chest. Haunted or not, I liked it. It felt peaceful and yet revitalizing.
Suddenly intimidated because I didn’t want to mess anything up in such a perfect place, my hands shook as I flipped back to the pages about rose care. The more I skimmed, however, the more confused I became.
These roses didn’t need a lick of my attention. They were all in excellent condition as if someone already tended to them. Maybe creepy kid had been wrong, and Lewis the groundskeeper came in here hourly to care for them.
Still…What the hell?
I frowned and slid my finger along the silken petals of a blood red rose. Perfectly pruned, weeded, and watered. It was as flawless as a thing could get.
But I couldn’t go tell Mr. Nash they didn’t need anything, could I? What if he fired me for lack of work to do, or because he thought I was lazy and lying about the roses not needing care?
I looked around again, searching for anything to water, or clip, or re-soil. It was crazy how thriving every single flower looked.
Maybe this was some kind of test, and Mr. Nash wanted me to fail. What if he’d never intended for me to work for him and the contract I’d signed to save my mom was being burned in the fireplace in this office as I stood here like a dumbass with nothing to weed.
Confused and worried, and growing a little angry, I scowled at a wall full of pink vine roses growing to my right. But they were honestly too pretty to be glared at, so my mood settled.
I bet Mom would love them. She was a fan of pink. And flowers. Plus, these were the good-smelling kind. I’d be a good son if I brought home such a flower to her. And it seemed as if they grew in abundance, not as if they were one of the rare breeds Mr. Nash had spoken of. So I reached for a bloom to pluck it from the vine without even thinking beyond how much it’d make my mother smile.
Behind me, a voice growled, “What the hell do you think you’re doing?”
Jumping half out of my skin because I’d been certain no one had been in here with me, I whirled around only to gasp, “Sh*t!”
The creepy cook’s son hadn’t been lying.
In front of me stood an irate woman with half her face melted off.

New Release-Review & Giveaway: BARGING IN by Josephine Myles

Length: 93,000 words

Blurb

When the boat's a rockin', don't come knockin'!

Out-and-proud travel writer Dan Taylor is a city boy who can't steer a boat to save his life, but that doesn't stop him from heading into the English countryside to write up a narrowboat holiday. Compared to London, the canal seems dull as ditchwater. Until he crashes into the boat of a half-naked, tattooed man whose bad-boy, penniless appearance doesn't fit with his posh accent. Dan is intrigued, and he always gets his man.

Still smarting from a past betrayal, Robin Hamilton is firmly closeted in his narrowboat-his refuge from outrageous, provocative men like Dan. But as circumstances keep throwing them together, he can't help himself from coming to the hopelessly out-of-place city boy's rescue. Exposure to Dan's sunny charm starts to melt Robin's resolve and he's tempted by the idea of a brief, harmless fling.

After all, in less than a week, Dan will have left the canal and be back to his diet of casual hook-ups and friends with benefits.

Determined not to fall in love, both men dive into one week of indulgence...only to find themselves swept away by a current of escalating intimacy and emotional intensity. Troubled waters they didn't anticipate... and haven't a clue how to navigate.

Warning: Contains one lovable tart, one posh boy gone feral, rough sex, alfresco sex, vile strawberry flavoured condoms, intimate body piercings, red thermal long-johns, erotic woodchopping, an errant cat, a few colourful characters you wouldn't touch with a bargepole, and plenty of messing about on the river.

Carra's Review

Barging In is exactly the type of story I look for when I want something mostly lighthearted, sweet with a nice dose of heat, and with a unique setting that helps keep an everyday trope—playboy meets the one—fresh and fun.  Besides that, now it has me thinking of taking my own boating holiday ;-)  It did take me a little bit to warm up to the pairing of Dan and Robin, but once I did I became enamored with their interesting matchup.

Dan is a typical single playboy, independent and with a modest amount of success as a travel writer, ready to party in the city and fool around with whoever takes his fancy at the time.  Robin is quite the opposite—reserved and quiet, preferring a more solitary, simple life out on the water.  He rebelled against his fancier upbringing, choosing tattoos, piercings and living off his hard work instead of following the more posh lifestyle he’d grown up enjoying.  These two are definitely a bit of a mismatch, so not only do we have our playboy Dan meeting someone who just might tame his ways, but we also get two opposites attracting—always a fun element to add to a story.

Usually with opposites falling for each other, you see each of them changing to become a bit like the other (or at least that’s the way the majority of the stories I read seem to go).  But here, we find most of the changes coming from Dan, made especially evident once his travel writing holiday time is up and he has to go back home.  It’s at that point that the angst starts to really creep in, and both men’s feelings start to become truly exposed.

Barging In was a very solid 4-star read for me, and I’d definitely recommend it as a good all-around M/M romance (especially if you like the tropes I mentioned earlier).  It is meant for readers 18+ for adult language along with sexual content, and there is some casual drug use mentioned (marijuana) as well.

English through and through, Josephine Myles is addicted to tea and busy cultivating a reputation for eccentricity. She writes gay erotica and romance, but finds the erotica keeps cuddling up to the romance, and the romance keeps corrupting the erotica. Jo's novel Stuff won the 2014 Rainbow Award for Best Bisexual Romance, and her novella Merry Gentlemen won the 2014 Rainbow Award for Best Gay Romantic Comedy. She loves to be busy, and is currently having fun trying to work out how she is going to fit in her love of writing, dressmaking and attending cabaret shows in fabulous clothing around the demands of a preteen with special needs and an incessantly curious toddler.

An Excerpt from the Book

Take an inside look at Love At First Crepe. Read this sizzling excerpt from the book.
Unfortunately, my sense of self-preservation seemed to be on vacation. I was completely frozen in fear, unable to move for what seemed like years. The giant didn't move either, and I wondered why. Strangely enough, he seemed just as surprised as I was that he was in my living room. We looked at each other, his beady eyes visible through the holes of his ski mask. The synapses in my brain finally began to fire, and I jumped into action, kicking the intruder as hard as I could in the groin. He groaned in pain and clumsily took a swipe at me with the knife as he sank to his knees.

I rolled out of his path and jumped swiftly to my feet. Unfortunately, the maneuver didn't work exactly as I planned. I lost my towel in the process and was startled to remember that I was completely naked underneath. My lack of clothing was the least of my worries. I had far bigger fish to fry.

I darted into the kitchen and ducked behind the counter. He rose slowly and lumbered toward me. Think, Willow, think!

The man was huge, larger than any human I'd ever seen. I made a quick mental note that his terrifying size might also work against him. Conversely, I was small and quick, and I was determined to use these things to my advantage. I didnít have much else. As he drew close to me, I sprinted back into the living room. Until I figured out what to do next, I had to stay out of his way.

To be honest, I didn't have much to offer in the strength department, and I fleetingly wished that I would have paid more attention to weight training at some point in my life. There was no time for regrets at that moment though, so I took quick stock of what I could use to fight back. There was a large paperweight on the table in the foyer. If I could get to that, I could smash him in the head with it. Of course, if I managed to get that far, I'd be better off running out the front door. I thought about my ballet classes and made a list of moves I could use for self-defense. Granted, it wasn't much, but it was all I had.

A grand battement might do the trick. I could bring my foot right up to his face and take him out, with my toes perfectly pointed of course. Given his size though, I doubted if my foot would reach that far. I groaned, wishing I had some martial arts experience instead. Ballet wasn't exactly famous for its self-defense tactics, but it would have to do. Rich girls weren't brought up to fight intruders. That's what Dad paid the bodyguards to do.

I jumped behind the couch, thankful that there was at least a large piece of furniture between me and the colossus. I was hopeful that one of my neighbors might overhear the altercation, although I knew that was a long shot. I could die there and no one would know until some unlucky neighbor smelled my rotting flesh from the hallway.
