Shaw watched Rufus leave with a conflicted expression.

“What’s the matter?” Brown asked.

“I’m wondering if I should go out there and secure one of those lost melons.”

Brown squinted. “They ain’t lost, Shaw. And what you’re describing is theft.” The alchemist glanced at Evander. “Help me out here, your Grace.”

“Mr. Brown is right, Miss Shaw,” Evander said as he wandered deeper into the alley. “You’ll get in trouble with the law.” He paused and arched an eyebrow at the forensic mage. “I’ll bring you a melon next time my cook buys some, so please refrain from accidentally nicking one of those unfortunate cantaloupes on your way out of here.”

Shaw brightened and fist-pumped the air. Brown muttered under his breath.

Something clinked against Evander’s boot. He frowned and lifted his foot out of the puddle he’d just stepped into. Water dripped into the dirty spill, spreading ripples across the brown surface.

A faint blue light flashed weakly beneath it.

Evander’s pulse quickened. He squatted and carefully moved aside the rock his boot had dislodged, exposing a small object.

Shaw and Brown joined him as he picked it up and brought it to eye level.

“What is that, your Grace?” the alchemist asked curiously.

Evander stared at the small crystal vial. It had a slim body and two tapering ends, fitting easily in the palm of his hand. A clear, sparkling azure liquid filled the hollow chamber within.

It didn’t look like the sort of thing you’d find in the East End.

Evander’s heart slammed against his ribs.

His intuition was telling him the object was a magical item. One linked to the victim.

His gaze shifted to the dead man, gauging the distance between the body’s point of impact and the location of the vial.

Was it on him when he fell?

The hairs lifted on the back of Evander’s neck in the next instant.

The air in the alley thickened with a suddenness that made his ears pop. Dread chilled him when his breath misted in front of his face.

Dark magic!

Shaw and Brown doubled over before he could shout a warning. Their hands rose to clutch their temples even as their faces contorted in expressions of pure agony, the suddenness of the invisible attack robbing them of breath and stealing their cries before they could form.

The only thing that protected Evander from the debilitating effect of the spell that incapacitated his associates was his powers.

Chapter 4: Auslin

Auslin’s words spilled out of him in a rush. “I’m so sorry! I don’t know what I was thinking going through Fate’s Gate to help Roltan. I never wanted to leave you and—”

Kitsuki cut him off with a gentle kiss, which was more reassuring than words. He embraced Auslin tightly with his one arm. “All that matters is you’re here with me now.”

Auslin’s heart ached for what his moment of stupidity had caused Kitsuki to suffer. “I never meant—”

“Unbeknownst to us, it was the Day of Ascension,” Kitsuki interrupted Auslin to say. “I had ascended the rankings as Father’s heir. Fate pushed you through Fate’s Gate. It was not your fault.”

Tears welled up in Auslin’s eyes. “But you had to suffer for so many centuries because I did such a stupid thing. How can I ever make that up to you?”

It made Auslin’s heart stutter in his chest when Kitsuki lovingly caressed his cheek. “I once told you I would wait a thousand years if that was what it took for you to return to my side. That was not a lie,” Kitsuki said. “I would have waited an eternity for you to be mine once more.”

While it was sweet, it was also heartbreaking to hear. He threw his arms around Kitsuki, hiding his face against his chest. “I never wanted to spend a single moment of my life without you, let alone inflict six hundred years of you wondering why I disappeared.”

Kitsuki kissed Auslin’s temple as he hugged him back. “You have returned. That is all that matters to me now.”

“But I left you,” Auslin insisted in an anguished tone.

“Yes, but you have returned to me,” Kitsuki countered. “You are mine once more. That is all I have ever asked of fate.”

“I’m never leaving your side ever again,” Auslin swore while hugging Kitsuki tighter.

Auslin didn’t know how long the two of them embraced in silence, but Kitsuki eventually gestured for them to sit on the enormous bed. Once they were comfortable, Auslin dared to ask the hard question. “What happened after I left?”

“I tried to follow you through Fate’s Gate, but it refused me, as Satsuma said it would,” Kitsuki told Auslin. “Kizoshi assured me that all was as it was supposed to be, but that was little consolation. Father also promised I would reunite with you someday in the future.”

“I’m so sorry,” Auslin apologized again, feeling like he could never say it enough. “I don’t know how you can ever forgive me for what I did to you.”

Kitsuki brushed Auslin’s hair from his eyes. “It was fate’s decision to push you back through the gate to your own time on that day. You bear no blame for what happened.”

Auslin didn’t understand how Kitsuki could be so forgiving for such a horrible thing. He hid his face against the shifter’s broad chest. “I’d feel a lot better if you were mad at me.”

The comment made the corner of Kitsuki’s mouth turn upward in a hint of a smile. “And what would that accomplish?”

When a plague hits his village, the shaman Cian travels to dwarves and centaurs for a cure. He allies with Thanyan, a lovely male elf, falling in love. Can they save the village and their own lives?

Blurb

When a plague ravages his village, the shaman Cian sails to the land of the dwarves for a cure. During the voyage, he meets and allies with Thanyan, a beautiful male elf who is a bard. Upon reaching the dwarven cleric whom Cian has been tasked with consulting, they uncover a dangerous secret: the plague resulted from blood magic. To undo this forbidden magic, they must travel to the island nation of the centaurs and visit The Amphitheater of Souls, the ancient temple where the blood magic was cast.

Cian and Thanyan hire a female dwarven warrior, Loquin, as a bodyguard for protection against the instigator of the plague. However, they still find themselves stalked, assaulted with magic, and tangled in secrets. On the voyage to the island, a sea serpent attacks, nearly destroying their ship, and when they arrive at the island, the spellcaster launches further attempts to kill them so they can’t lift the blood curse causing the plague. With the help of centaur priestesses, the group fights to untangle a dark affair that is revealed to span decades.

As Cian and Thanyan become embroiled in this dangerous mission to capture the rogue spellcaster, they grow to love each other. But with their lives at risk, can they save the village and live out their lives together in love?

Excerpt

In the morning, Cian and Thanyan ate a hearty dwarven breakfast and walked back to the Five Abbeys. Rokemak awaited them. He opened the door as soon as Cian knocked.

Cian bowed. “Good morning, Esteemed Cleric Rokemak.”

“Yes, a good morning indeed. Do come in.” Rokemak swerved through the stakes of books and the three cats, each of which tried to trip him as he walked.

Cian and Thanyan followed Rokemak inside.

“Does this mean you’ve discovered something more about our quest?” Thanyan asked.

“I have information, yes.” Rokemak picked up two letters from his desk, both with a wax seal. He handed them to Cian. “The first letter is to Etena, Priestess of the Western Temple of Equatusa. The Western Temple is where you’ll need to go to access the Amphitheater of Souls. I’ve met and spoken with her before. She’s even-tempered—for a centaur, anyway—and will hear you out.”

Cian glanced at the first letter. “Will the city guards permit us to enter if I show them this letter?” The outside was addressed to Etena from Rokemak.

Rokemak snorted. “They will test your strength first. Typically, centaurs are like the stereotypical night elves: They hate tourists, and they hate weaklings.”

“Great. So I’ll have to practice fighting with Loquin, or I’m doomed.” Cian wished now he’d kept up his skills after his elder sister had trained him. He held up his arms, which were slender, not muscular. “I’m a druid and an apprentice shaman. I have no interest in fighting.”

“Centaurs prefer physical strength,” Rokemak said, “but they accept there is more than one kind of power.”

“Druidic power?” Cian raised an eyebrow. “The skills of a shaman?”

“Think about what you can do that others cannot,” Rokemak said.

“I don’t know of another person besides my gran and Shaman Shaeya who has visions,” Thanyan said. “That is a rare gift from the deities. I don’t suppose you can have visions deliberately?”

Cian cringed and let his gaze hover on Rokemak’s longhaired white cat napping in the sunlight pouring through a window. “Shaeya and Adeen have both mastered inducing visions at will, but I have not. I am able to scry for information using water or fire. If centaurs find divination useful, it’s one of my top skills. That and healing spells.”

“Healing spells are useful everywhere,” Rokemak said. “In fact, among the night elves, healers have the most respect afforded them of any magic user.”

Surprised by Rokemak’s even tone of voice when discussing night elves, Cian glanced back at him. Humans usually hate and fear night elves. Apparently dwarves do not.

Thanyan glowered at the mention of the night elves.

“Above all, centaurs prize honor.” Rokemak stooped to pet the zebra-coated cat swiping his legs. “Don’t forget that.”

“Very well.” Cian knew little about centaurs, so he took the priest’s word at face value.

“Above all else, dwarves are honorable, and Cian is a most honorable human,” Thanyan said. “He is willing to sacrifice himself for his village. If anything, Cian could use slightly less honor.” He slanted Cian a look. “However, if this impresses upon the centaurs the dire importance of the quest, then all is well.”

Cian held up the second envelope. “And this letter?”

“That is to the high priestess Gordina.” Rokemak straightened. “You need to ask Etena to take you to see Gordina. She’ll first bite your head off, but if you persist, she’ll agree to be interviewed. From there, convince her to do the spell you need.”

“And do you know which spell we need?” Cian asked.

“Not precisely. Only that it must reverse the blood magic spell.” Rokemak’s brow furrowed. “Only Gordina will know which one will work. She can deduce which spell was cast, or, if you are lucky, she’ll have a record of the spell.”

Cian stowed both letters in his bag. “Thank you for the invaluable advice. You honor Shaeya with your friendship, and I am deeply grateful.”

“Oh, none of that.” Rokemak flushed lightly. “This is my final piece of advice. Equatusa is a goddess of the centaurs. Her statues are obvious because she’s portrayed as a centaur with wings. Each time you see a statue of her, incline your head, bow, or otherwise salute her. The centaurs will take it as a sign of respect to them and their culture. Now off to the docks with you! The daily ship to Valcalla leaves soon.”

“I will pen you into my epic about our quest favorably,” Thanyan said with a grin.

Offering a final bow, Cian allowed Rokemak to usher them away.

Chapter 3: Auslin

Sleep was slow to leave Auslin in the morning. He lingered in an unaware state, enjoying the warmth embracing him. It was a comfort he was loath to let go of in favor of wakefulness. He snuggled deeper into the comfort with a contented sigh, loving when he was held tighter.

It had been so long since Kio had held him like that—and that’s when Auslin remembered it couldn’t be Kio behind him. His eyes flew open, and he saw a pale arm around him with silver shifter markings. Auslin scrambled back with an alarmed noise as he turned to see a naked man.

Brushing his long, silver-white hair from his face and opening his eyes, the shifter blinked sleepily as he looked at Auslin questioningly with startlingly familiar ice-blue eyes. Auslin’s heart raced when their gazes met. The shifter in front of him looked like a much younger Kitsuki. But unlike the ruler, the person in front of him had both arms, different colored hair, and a brighter aura.

Although the dragon monarch looked to be in his thirties in human years, Auslin knew he was over a thousand years old. The shifter in front of him appeared to be equivalent to a twenty-something-year-old human male in age, but he was probably still several hundred years old.

He was a stunningly beautiful creature in seductive repose, which made Auslin’s heart pound for a different reason altogether. The shifter had shimmering silver markings that sensuously caressed his entire body. They were proof that he was an immensely powerful shifter.

Auslin knew Kitsuki had similar lines on the back of his hand, the sides of his neck, and chest, but they were much darker and didn’t swirl with energy like he had seen with other shifters before. He had always assumed Kitsuki had markings on the rest of his body, like a shifter of his rank was supposed to. But Auslin had no way of knowing how extensive they were since he had never seen him undressed before. And for some reason, thinking of the dragon monarch naked brought heat to his cheeks.

But none of that changed the fact that Auslin was looking at an impossible person. He couldn’t make sense of it at all.

When he continued silently staring, the shifter propped himself up on his elbow. He asked in a rumbling voice deepened by sleep, “Is it a human custom to awaken with such fear?”

It was not the reaction Auslin had been expecting. “It is when you wake up in bed naked with a stranger!”

“You fear me as a man but not as a dragon? What sense does that make? Humans are such curious creatures.”

Chapter 1: Jaega Ariake

The naked man standing in front of Jaega was fearful but defiant. “You may as well kill me. I’d rather be dead than be your whore.”

He was dirty and shackled, with both his hands and feet bound with heavy chains. His long white hair was badly matted. There was the faintest trace of shifter markings on his pale skin, but they were a dull silver and not vibrant like they should be. Even under the filth, he appeared to be very handsome. What was strange was that Jaega could smell the taint of neglect on him, but there was no hint of the man’s scent. It was an oddity, considering dragon shifters were renowned for their powerful sense of smell.

“I did not save you from one beast to inflict myself upon you in such a dishonorable way.” Jaega sheathed his sword to put the man at ease. “I am Jaega Ariake, the head general of Valzerna’s army, under the command of my oldest brother, King Tatsuki Ariake. You have nothing to fear from me.”

The man watched him warily. “So you say. Everyone knows military men rape and pillage as they please.”

“Not in my army. I would sooner strike one of my men down than allow that.” Jaega held his hands out in surrender. “Will you let me help free you? Now that King Decius of Shadron has been dethroned, you can return home.”

The man’s brow wrinkled with distrust. “You’re not going to keep me for yourself as a war trophy?”

Jaega shook his head. “I have never claimed any person as a war trophy, and I am certainly not about to start doing that now.” He sensed the man wavering in his resolve to stay distrustful. “What is your name?”

The man hesitated for a moment. “Fersen Rohesia.”

“Please allow me to undo the grievous wrong that has been done to you by a cruel king.”

“You can’t.” The despair in his voice tugged at Jaega’s heart. “These are enchanted to electrocute me if anyone tries to use magic on them.”

“Then I will not use magic.” Jaega took a step closer to Fersen, who stood his ground.

The chains between the wrist shackles were also connected to the ankle ones. Jaega made quick work of breaking off the adjoined chains and the ones that bound Fersen to the wall. However, the cuffs themselves were impossible to pull apart, even with Jaega’s considerable brute strength. He frowned with frustration as he came up with a different plan.

“Since I cannot remove these, I would suggest you come back to camp with me so that one of our lock pickers can free you from these.”

“So you are taking me as a war trophy,” Fersen said in a flat voice.

“No, I am merely suggesting that you accompany me as a guest to my quarters. You will be fed, clothed, and you can bathe. After a good night of rest, you will be better prepared to start your journey home tomorrow.” When Fersen still didn’t seem convinced, Jaega spoke more directly. “On the honor of my royal family, I will not lay a hand on you, nor will I allow anyone else to. You will be treated the same as any honored guest of the royal clan of Ariake.”

“Why would you do that for me, though? You don’t know me or owe me anything.”

Jaega took off his jacket and draped it over Fersen’s thin shoulders. It dwarfed his smaller body, but it at least covered his dignity. “Because it is the right thing to do. No one deserves to be kept like a caged animal, especially not you.”
