Excerpt
As they rounded a corner, Jax collided with a muscular guy in a smart suit. The hairs on the back of Hugo’s arms stood up as a pulse of electricity swept through him. He grabbed Jax’s arm, steadying him so he didn’t fall.
“We’ve got to go,” he hissed, tugging his lover’s arm.
Jax didn’t move. He was staring at the man in the suit, breathing harshly. The shopkeeper’s yells were getting closer, yet Hugo couldn’t resist glancing at the man they’d bumped into. He found himself noticing every tiny detail in a matter of seconds. The guy was gorgeous, with dark hair that had been cut into a short, neat style and grey eyes with a dark brown ring around the pupil. His cheekbones were sharp and pronounced, and he had a couple days’ worth of stubble. He smelt of rainy days and damp moss. Hugo’s stare tracked to the man’s neck, where he saw the rice grain-sized bump of a chip beneath his skin. He was a shifter. Judging by the man’s size and the way Jax was quivering, he had to be an alpha. Hugo felt like he was being pulled towards the man, which was a dangerous sensation, considering how close the shopkeeper’s shouts sounded.
“We’ve got to go,” Hugo insisted, tugging Jax harder. They couldn’t get caught.
“Go,” the alpha said.
His voice was deep and velvety, the kind of voice you could listen to all day and not get bored of. It was a voice Hugo could happily get wrapped up in. Damn, why was he thinking that way, and why was his skin tingling in the alpha’s presence?
He shook himself.
“Run,” the man told them in a commanding growl, stepping aside so he was no longer blocking the path.
Jax pushed him forward, and suddenly, they were running again. Hugo felt a sickening wrench in his stomach, which made him falter, but he quickly found his feet again. Nothing mattered but getting as far away from the shopkeeper as possible.
Carra's Review
I couldn’t not read this story once I’d read the blurb, it hooked me right off the bat. Then once I started reading I was immediately drawn in…I even found myself getting antsy for Jax and Hugo during the first third or so of the book when so much was up in the air for them. You could see just how dedicated to each other they are, even when feelings of inadequacy continually rise to the surface for Hugo. The status of shifters in this particular universe is precarious and with relations between shifters and humans being illegal, their relationship has a lot of strikes against it from the start.
Once the precipitating event occurs to really get things going (and my god, did I want to react exactly as Jax did and start some butt-whooping), and a stranger intervenes to help out…that’s when things start to really come together. From that point on, it’s all about Jax, Hugo, and Dominic coming together and starting to connect on every level. Even when Hugo thinks he’s now the outsider once Dominic comes into the picture, the bond the continues to strengthen between the three of them, proving him wrong and solidifying their relationship.
A good chunk of the story follows their journey to somewhere they can be free and accepted, and harrowing though it is it also helps bring them even closer together. Since the tension carries on throughout their road to freedom, it does make it hard to put the book down since you’re constantly wondering if they will be found out.
I liked the dynamics between the three of them, and how each of them plays a part in reassuring the others of their place in their throuple. The intimate scenes are intense and passionate, and you can see the contrast between those and the scenes when Jax is in heat when everything becomes more frenzied and animalistic. And as for how everything ends? Yep, happy sigh. A really happy sigh.
Run Free was a 4.5-star read for me; I really enjoyed the world the author created and the characters as well. My interest was also piqued by two of the supporting characters—Alistair, Dominic’s best friend (and also a shifter) who you can’t help but feel for given what has happened in his own relationship, and Nate, a human who helps Jax, Hugo, and Dominic along the way. I’m hoping there will be more stories to come in this world *fingers crossed*. Keep in mind that with the adult language and sexual content this book is meant for readers 18+.
About the Author
Colette’s personal love story began at university, where she met her future husband. An evening of flirting, in the shadow of Lancaster castle, eventually led to a fairytale wedding. She’s enjoying her own ‘happy ever after’ in the north of England with her husband, two beautiful children and her writing.
