Book Review: MR. NAUGHTY LIST by Leta Blake (Home for the Holidays #2)

MR. NAUGHTY LIST
by Leta Blake

A cute teacher gets a spanking this Christmas. How hot can it get being on his former student’s Naughty List?

Is Aaron allowed to want a hot holiday fling with his young former student? Even more forbidden, is he allowed to want this student to spank him?

It’s another Christmas, and Aaron is still in the closet as a gay man and a natural submissive. With one youthful indiscretion blacking his ethics record, he can’t afford to indulge his desires no matter how pent up and needy that leaves him.

Until his former student comes home for the holidays.

Dominant and charming, RJ knows what Aaron needs—intense, steamy encounters and a firm hand. As Christmas nears, RJ helps Aaron unlock his true self. But family and fallout await, and all good things must end.

Or can their hot holiday affair turn them into lasting lovers?

Mr. Naughty List is a steamy Christmas MM romance set in the Home for the Holidays series that began with Mr. Frosty Pants, but can be read as a standalone. Featuring light D/s, spanking, an older sub with a younger Dom, former student/teacher dynamics, and, of course, warm, sweet holiday feels complete with a strong happy ending.

Carra's Review

One good way to judge how much I enjoyed a book is by how quickly I get around to re-reading it.  Mr. Naughty List?  I’ve read twice already in less than a month.  It has a dynamic between the main characters that I love—a younger dominant personality with an older submissive one—and that it’s a former student and his teacher makes the matchup even more enticing.

The story has a just-right balance of naughty and nice (oh come on, it’s a holiday romance…I just had to say it), with not too much kink but still enough steam to keep you fanning yourself.  Now toss in some really solid relationship development, and I was fully invested in Aaron and RJ getting their HEA.

There were two main areas of drama, first concerning Aaron’s mother—don’t EVEN get me started on her or you might never hear the end of it about that unsupportive, appearances-are-everything b*tch…thank heavens for his dad though, he at least does parenting right.  The other is with RJ’s stepbrother, which is not as angsty as what’s going on with Aaron’s mother, but unfortunately does connect to her at a certain point.

You’ll find plenty of intensity between Aaron and RJ, and it’s pretty darn satisfying to watch their holiday fling evolve into so much more than either of them expect.  I easily became engrossed in this story, and it’s definitely one of my favorite holiday romances this year.  It will absolutely become a yearly holiday read…if I can wait that long to read it again!

Mr. Naughty List gets a 5-star rating from me, and I do highly recommend it to any M/M romance fan (and not just for the holidays).  While this is the second book in the series and the main characters from the first story, Mr. Frosty Pants, do show up here, it does stand on its own.  I did like this one more than the first book, mainly because I felt more invested in the characters…and the naughty bits might have caught my attention more…okay, a whole lot more.  This book is meant for readers 18+ for adult language and sexual content.

Kerry Monkburn is contracted to a violent alpha in prison for brutal crimes. Now pregnant with the alpha’s child, he lives high in the mountains, far above the city that once lured him in with promises of a better life. Content warning for a violent and oppressive society regarding reproductive rights.

Carra's Review

After reading Alpha Heat, the second book in this series, my curiosity was already piqued regarding Janus, so I was eager to get started on Bitter Heat to see how he’d be redeemed.  To be honest, it had been a while since I’d read the second book when I started this one so it was almost like I was starting from scratch—and that’s actually a good thing on two fronts.

First, it means if you haven’t started this series you won’t be lost if you’re reading this one first.  There’s enough background to allow Bitter Heat to stand on its own.  Second, I went into this story with a neutral attitude towards Janus thanks to the time gap between reading books two and three.  For me, that means it was easier to give Janus a chance and not allow my opinions from before color my perception of him now.

I did feel like the beginning of the story started off a bit slowly, but after about a third of the way in things started picking up.  As with the other books in the series, the writing is solid and the world building as strong as before.  And the sex scenes?  Once they get started, it’s hard to decide which of the books in the series have the steamiest ones.  I mean, damn…talk about getting tingles…

While I did correctly interpret the subtle signs the author planted throughout the story regarding Janus and Kerry’s relationship, I have to say I was slightly disappointed that she went that route as the way to resolve the issues with Kerry’s contracted alpha and his family.  Don’t get me wrong—I absolutely do NOT begrudge Janus and Kerry anything at all; I love them together, and I love how their situation allowed things between them to develop slowly on an emotional level (not a physical one though…once that starts, it’s off to the races for these guys).  I just was hoping (like one of the supporting characters was as well) that things would lead to a successful challenge on the legal as well as cultural/religious levels to start making headway for omegas in this world.  I guess I’ll be holding on to that hope for now.

Bitter Heat was a 4-star read for me overall, but I will say that the relationship development and Janus and Kerry’s physical chemistry were 5+ stars all the way.  As I mentioned previously, this story could be read as a standalone, but you’ll get a lot more satisfaction from it if you read this series in order…which will also give you better insight into the road Janus traveled to get here.  This book is meant for readers 18+ for adult language and erotic sexual content.

Length: 94,000 words approx.
Cover Design: Dar Albert

Blurb

Walker Reed's Louisiana cattle ranch is in debt after costly repairs from hurricane damage. To get the money, his family schemes to make Walker the star of a new bachelor reality series: Queer Seeks Spouse. How hard can it be to fake interest in a dozen handsome men for a few weeks in exchange for enough money to solve all of their problems?

Roan Carmichael never got his Masters degree after his mother was diagnosed with cancer. With medical bills piling up, and a costly experimental treatment available, Roan signs on to be a suitor on Queer Seeks Spouse. While he hates having to leave his sick mother long enough to win the cash for her treatment, he's willing to do whatever it takes.

Can two men who are just in it for the money fake their way into real and lasting love?

Cowboy Seeks Husband, the latest book by Vespertine authors Leta Blake and Indra Vaughn, features a cowboy, a hipster, opposites attract, steamy scenes, and heart tugging moments that will leave you wanting more.

Excerpt

“We’re going what?”

“Noodling.” Walker looked far too calm. And smug. Roan figured this probably heralded danger in brooding southern cowboys.

“And I need these.” Roan held up the waterproof bib overalls.

Walker smirked. He had his arms folded over his chest and was leaning against the doorjamb of the kitchen. Roan had been cornered there by Walker and John while making sour apple tea. “Technically you don’t, but I’m sure you’ll want to wear them.”

Roan narrowed his eyes. “But that means we’re going into the water. I know what lives in your water down here. Alligators. And venomous snakes. I googled.”

“Now, why would you do that?” Walker dramatically slapped his forehead, then leaned in closer as if to share a secret. Roan leaned in too, drawn to Walker’s firm, muscled body and cheerful brown eyes, despite his probable imminent death on this so-called date. “Here’s the thing: gators aren’t that aggressive really. You probably won’t even see one. They want to stay as far away from you as you do from them.”

“Really?”

“No. But it makes it easier to get in the water if you tell yourself that.”

Roan stared at him.

“But, seriously, I’m not scared of the gators, and if there was a real, true danger, you know they wouldn’t let us anywhere near the water.”

Roan swallowed hard. The morning light from the kitchen window highlighted the little wrinkles at the edges of Walker’s eyes. Probably from squinting into fields all day. The man even smelled like fresh-cut grass and fresh air.

“As for the snakes, yeah…well.” Walker shrugged. “You just have to make sure you don’t wander into a nest of moccasins. I’m sure the set nurse has antivenom on hand.”

“Water moccasins. The shoe snakes.”

“They don’t look anything like shoes.”

Roan put the waterproof overalls on the counter. “Oh my God, I’m going to die.”

Walker straightened, and the attractive, teasing grin fell from his face. “Seriously, though, if you don’t want to do it, just say so. I won’t hold it against you.”

“If you say bless your heart, I’ll know exactly what you mean,” Roan grumbled. Walker laughed, and God. He was so damn handsome. Feeling his face heat, Roan looked down at the dry bib overalls. They were pretty thick. Maybe the fabric would stop the snake bites. “Fine, I’ll come.”

“I’m mighty glad.”

“You should be.”

Between the threat of biting critter, the thrill of Walker’s sweet drawl, and the headiness of his eager attention, Roan’s head was a swirl. Leaving his tea behind untasted, he stomped away for some privacy to get changed, ignoring John who said, “That’s got to be the most reluctant acceptance of a date I’ve ever seen. Andy’s going to love it.”

Carra's Review

I’m not a fan of reality TV, especially shows like what this story features.  What’s good about this book is that it highlights what I’m pretty certain really does go on with these types of shows—doing whatever it takes for ratings because ratings=money.  Twist the truth, make things look like they are certain way with “clever” editing, provoke reactions…you know, all that good Hollywood stuff.  Yeah, so very much not my thing.  But the idea of taking a concept like those bachelor shows and making it M/M?  Yep, interest piqued…especially since I have liked what I’ve read from these two authors individually in the past.

This was a bit insta-lovey, and I didn’t quite feel a full connection between the main characters of Roan and Walker.  And where an actual television show would give each of the suitors more or less equal time with the bachelor, here the scenes are heavily weighted towards Walker’s time with Roan.  The heat factor is pretty low for much of the book, though there are a couple of places it can be found.

One of the things that irked me in a big way was one of the producers, Molly.  I just wanted to slap her silly.  Unfeeling, conniving, manipulative to the max, and just an annoying bitch.  Yeah, I think that sums her up.  On the other hand, there was Ben (one of the suitors), who I thought was a sweetheart (even after one indiscretion thanks to Molly), and I hope he’ll be getting a story of his own—though hopefully not in the context of a reality show.

Cowboy Seeks Husband was a good read, and for me comes in at 3.5 stars.  This story is meant for readers 18+ for adult language and some sexual content.

When Casey Stevens went away to college four years ago, he ghosted on his straight best friend, Joel Vreeland. He hoped time and distance would lessen the unrequited affection he felt, but all it did was make him miss Joel more. Home for the holidays, Casey hopes they might find a way to be friends again. But Joel’s frosty reception reminds Casey of just how hard he had to fight to be Joel’s friend in the first place. It’s going to take a Christmas miracle to get past that cool façade again.

Book Review & Giveaway: HEAT FOR SALE by Blake Moreno

Exclusive to Amazon and on Kindle Unlimited

Length: 192 pages
Cover Design: Dar Albert @ Wicked Smart Design

Blurb

Heat can be sold but love is earned.

In a world where omegas sell their heats for profit, Adrien is a university student in need of funding. With no family to fall back on, he reluctantly allows the university's matcher to offer his virgin heat for auction online. Anxious, but aware this is the reality of life for all omegas, Adrien hopes whoever wins his heat will be kind.

Heath—a wealthy, older alpha—is rocked by the young man's resemblance to his dead lover, Nathan. When Heath discovers Adrien is Nathan’s lost son from his first heat years before they met, he becomes obsessed with the idea of reclaiming a piece of Nathan.

Heath buys Adrien’s heat with only one motivation: to impregnate Adrien, claim the child, and move on. But their undeniable passion shocks him. Adrien doesn't know what to make of the handsome, mysterious stranger he's pledged his body to, but he’s soon swept away in the heat of the moment and surrenders to Heath entirely.

Once Adrien is pregnant, Heath secrets him away to his immense and secluded home. As the birth draws near, Heath grows to love Adrien for the man he is, not just for his connection to Nathan. Unaware of Heath's past with his omega parent and coming to depend on him heart and soul, Adrien begins to fall as well.

But as their love blossoms, Nathan's shadow looms. Can Heath keep his new love and the child they've made together once Adrien discovers his secrets?

Heat for Sale is a stand-alone m/m erotic romance by Leta Blake, writing as Blake Moreno. Infused with a du Maurier Rebecca-style secret, it features a well-realized omegaverse, an age-gap, dominance and submission, heats, knotting, and scorching hot scenes.

Carra's Review

With this story being Leta Blake’s darker side (hence her writing as Blake Moreno), I went into this story knowing things were not going to be all roses.  The first way this is blatantly evident is with the world in which the story is set.  A non-shifter omegaverse, this world presents omegas in an unflattering light, making it seem like many are out for money and don’t really care about how they use their bodies.  Are there exceptions?  Of course, and Adrien is one of those exceptions…though his circumstances put him in the unfortunate position of having to sell his heat in order that he may continue on his life’s plan.

Cue Heath’s entrance.  Heath is a character who at first glance might seem cold and uncaring, and as if he’s just using Adrien to capture a piece of his past.  Looking deeper, it is obvious his attitude and the face he shows is his way of protecting himself.  But until far into the story, it makes him seem selfish.  Once I finished reading the whole book though, I was able to make peace with my initial feelings towards his character.

The scenes during Adrien’s heat are graphic and erotic—not to mention filled with filthy talk…so fans of this genre will most likely be pleased with this side of the storytelling.  Once Adrien is pregnant, the intimate scenes become less graphic but maintain the same level of eroticism along with those dirty mouths.

There was less explanation of this omegaverse than what I would have preferred, so it’s unknown how this society evolved into what it is.  Omegas do seem to have more freedoms and are not tied down if they don’t want to be, but the overall feel is that they are there to be used.

Based on the genre and the fact that I knew to expect a darker story than what I’ve read by this author previously, along with the angsty first part, then admittedly romantic thread weaving through the rest of the story, Heat for Sale wound up being between 3.5 and 4 stars for me.  This book is only for readers 18+ for adult language and explicit erotic content.
