Franklin University Series Season 2, Book 5

In all of my years as a professor, never did I imagine I’d end up getting a lap dance from a student. But I did. What’s worse? He’s my new TA. And the icing on top of the cake? I can’t stop thinking about it. Can’t get him off my mind.

I’m Dr. Silas Sinclair. Respectable educator and a man with his head on his shoulders. I don’t break the rules. I don’t cross boundaries. And I certainly don’t stalk students.

Or at least I didn’t until him. Everly Winslow is bad news waiting to happen. He’s everything I should stay away from, but I can’t. The flirting. The taunting. It’s constant, and it’s too much.

I’m only human and it’s only a matter of time before I crack and give in to my desires. When all is said and done, will I be able to maintain my respectable career or will it all crash and burn?

Carra's Review

I’m always game for a story revolving around a taboo-type relationship.  In this case it’s student/professor, and I am so very here for it!  The setup is one I’ve seen before - an anonymous hookup before finding out each other’s true identities - and sets the stage for the remainder of the tale.

I liked the main characters, and thought they were very well matched; they certainly had plenty of sexual chemistry!  For the majority of the story things were relatively easy for them, and the angst level was pretty low.  Even the couple of instances in the beginning where people close to them found out there wasn’t any real drama.  The inclusion of the photography elements was a nice touch without being overly technical.

We all know though that there will come a point in this type of story where things go sideways, and when they do here it’s a very abrupt change that I actually found a bit jarring.  The first two thirds of the story where everything flowed so easily for Tyler and Hayden is a complete opposite from what comes after the drama that pops up (I’m laying the blame squarely at Hayden’s feet based on his total permanent shutdown as his reaction).  From that point until things are resolved things feel a bit desolate, and once the resolution comes around it feels a bit quick like loose ends being hurriedly tied up to end the story.

Overall, I did enjoy the story, I just would have preferred a less discordant transition for their relationship when things went south.  This story still fell somewhere between 3.5 and 4 stars for me thanks to the pre- and post-drama relationship being so loving and easygoing bringing it back up.  If you’re a fan of the student-professor trope, you’ll want to check this one out, keeping in mind it’s meant for readers 18+ for adult language and plenty of sexual content.

Book Review: MR. NAUGHTY LIST by Leta Blake (Home for the Holidays #2)

MR. NAUGHTY LIST
by Leta Blake

A cute teacher gets a spanking this Christmas. How hot can it get being on his former student’s Naughty List?

Is Aaron allowed to want a hot holiday fling with his young former student? Even more forbidden, is he allowed to want this student to spank him?

It’s another Christmas, and Aaron is still in the closet as a gay man and a natural submissive. With one youthful indiscretion blacking his ethics record, he can’t afford to indulge his desires no matter how pent up and needy that leaves him.

Until his former student comes home for the holidays.

Dominant and charming, RJ knows what Aaron needs—intense, steamy encounters and a firm hand. As Christmas nears, RJ helps Aaron unlock his true self. But family and fallout await, and all good things must end.

Or can their hot holiday affair turn them into lasting lovers?

Mr. Naughty List is a steamy Christmas MM romance set in the Home for the Holidays series that began with Mr. Frosty Pants, but can be read as a standalone. Featuring light D/s, spanking, an older sub with a younger Dom, former student/teacher dynamics, and, of course, warm, sweet holiday feels complete with a strong happy ending.

Carra's Review

One good way to judge how much I enjoyed a book is by how quickly I get around to re-reading it.  Mr. Naughty List?  I’ve read twice already in less than a month.  It has a dynamic between the main characters that I love—a younger dominant personality with an older submissive one—and that it’s a former student and his teacher makes the matchup even more enticing.

The story has a just-right balance of naughty and nice (oh come on, it’s a holiday romance…I just had to say it), with not too much kink but still enough steam to keep you fanning yourself.  Now toss in some really solid relationship development, and I was fully invested in Aaron and RJ getting their HEA.

There were two main areas of drama, first concerning Aaron’s mother—don’t EVEN get me started on her or you might never hear the end of it about that unsupportive, appearances-are-everything b*tch…thank heavens for his dad though, he at least does parenting right.  The other is with RJ’s stepbrother, which is not as angsty as what’s going on with Aaron’s mother, but unfortunately does connect to her at a certain point.

You’ll find plenty of intensity between Aaron and RJ, and it’s pretty darn satisfying to watch their holiday fling evolve into so much more than either of them expect.  I easily became engrossed in this story, and it’s definitely one of my favorite holiday romances this year.  It will absolutely become a yearly holiday read…if I can wait that long to read it again!

Mr. Naughty List gets a 5-star rating from me, and I do highly recommend it to any M/M romance fan (and not just for the holidays).  While this is the second book in the series and the main characters from the first story, Mr. Frosty Pants, do show up here, it does stand on its own.  I did like this one more than the first book, mainly because I felt more invested in the characters…and the naughty bits might have caught my attention more…okay, a whole lot more.  This book is meant for readers 18+ for adult language and sexual content.

Review, Excerpt & Giveaway: BEAUTIFUL TRAUMA by Aimee Nicole Walker (Queen City Rogues #3)

Beautiful Trauma
Queen City Rogues Series, Book 3
Aimee Nicole Walker
M/M Romance
Release Date: 07.18.19

Cover model: Joel Leslie
Photographer: Christopher John
Cover artist: Jay Aheer

Blurb
Does trauma define or motivate a person?
Homeless and rejected, Henry Sullivan arrived on the doorstep of Ryan’s Place with nothing but the clothes on his back. Life as he knew it was over. Within those walls, Henry found the encouragement and love needed to turn hopeless into hopeful. Enrolling for summer classes at his community college was the first step toward achieving the dreams he thought were lost to him. There was just one little snag: the professor standing in the front of the room taught Henry the true meaning of human sexuality.
After a crushing breakup, Professor Ezra Meyer moved to the Queen City for a fresh start where everything was new—job, home, and friends. His first challenge: prove the benefits of his biology of human sexuality course outweighed the controversy. Ezra agreed to teach the class during the summer semester at a community college associated with his university to gauge interest. There was just one little problem: Ezra had personally demonstrated the unit on Sexual Technique and Behaviors with one of his students.
Random or Fate?
It was supposed to be a harmless hookup on a night when Henry was celebrating his birthday and Ezra was trying to ease his loneliness. Fast forward six months later, the attraction blazed hotter than ever, but acting on it could have dire consequences neither man was willing to risk. Or were they? Could true love be Henry and Ezra’s ultimate reward, or were they destined to become just another sad lesson learned?
Beautiful Trauma is a story about triumph over tragedy, embracing the unexpected, and a reminder that family is more than biology. Are you looking for a feel-good romance with witty banter, toe-curling passion, and a story that stays with you long after the final page? Look no further. Beautiful Trauma is the third book in the Queen City Rogues series but reads as a standalone book. It contains sexually explicit material and colorful language and is intended for adults 18 and over.

Excerpt
Ezra lifted his head and smiled down at me. “I like the way you think.” He started to lower his head to kiss me but jerked back. “F*ck!”
“What is it? A muscle spasm?”
“Hey now,” Ezra said, sounding offended. “I’m not that old.”
“There’s no age requirement for a muscle spasm. Remember my limp earlier tonight?”
Ezra nodded to acknowledge my point. “It wasn’t a spasm; a mosquito bit me on the ass.”
He looked so outraged that a mosquito would dare take a bite of his ass. I couldn’t stop the laughter building inside me. “I-I’m sorry,” I managed to say before the dam broke and it burst from my chest. “I’d bite your ass too if I were her.”
Ezra tried not to laugh, but he joined me until he got bit a second time. “That’s it,” he said firmly, leaping to his feet. “It’s time for a bath, then you need to get some sleep.” He blew out the candles and crooked his fingers for me to follow.
On our way to the bathroom, I watched in puzzlement as Ezra stopped by his bedside table and picked up his phone.
“Checking your messages?” I asked.
“Adding citronella candles to my shopping list before I forget,” he quipped. He looked at me with a raised brow. “Not a single smartass joke out of you about faulty memories at my age.”

I held up my hands in surrender. “I wouldn’t dream of it.” My lips quivered and threatened to give way to laughter yet again.
“Get in the bathroom,” Ezra said, pointing to the doorway.
“Yes, sir,” I said cheekily then gasped when Ezra’s hand landed soundly against my bare ass. I spun around to face him. “Spanking wasn’t in the lesson tonight.”
“Keep it up, and you’re going to get a firsthand lesson in spankings, Henry.”
The idea thrilled me to the core, and I suddenly wanted to be naughty—very, very naughty.

Carra's Review

It’s been a long while since I’ve read a good teacher-student romance, and here in Beautiful Trauma, Aimee Nicole Walker nails it while also throwing in some extra complications for the characters.  Those extras include an age gap between the two main characters (18 years), a prior scandal for Ezra (our professor here), Henry’s painful not-so-distant past plus his unfortunate health situation.  Though the matchup here is between two adults in a college setting, there is still the issue of Ezra being in a position to influence Henry’s grade so that right there is a big no-no as well—even if they’d first become involved prior to school starting.  So right from the start there’s several factors in play.

I love how determined Henry is to make it on his own, and his resilience and focus are admirable.  He’s making the best of some difficult circumstances, trying to make things better for himself.  I was a bit bummed that we didn’t get to see the full extent of Henry and Ezra’s first encounter together before they met again at the university, it was kind of a tease to tell us about this amazing, sensual, mind-blowing hookup but not elaborate on the details—and no, that’s not a plea for a gratuitous sex scene…that night and following morning were the true start of their deep connection, so I’m looking more for the emotional connection.

I thought the two of them together were wonderful.  The age gap was really only a concern to Henry, when in most stories I’ve read it’s usually the older guy who harps on the difference in years.  That made it seem like Henry felt undeserving of Ezra’s attentions, while at other times Henry acted bold and possessive—so there was a bit of internal conflict for him, which lended just the right touch of angst to the story.

This story wound up being a solid 4-star read for me, and I’d definitely recommend it, particularly if you’re a fan of any of the factors I mentioned previously.  Though this is the third book in the series, it can be read as a standalone and it’s meant for readers 18+ for adult language and sexual content.

Book Blurb

Toby’s wild magic is killing him. The mage guilds have given up on him, and it’s only a matter of time before he dies in a spectacular, catastrophic bang. His only hope is an exiled wizard who lives in seclusion—and is rumored to have lost his mind.

The years alone on his hilltop estate have not been good for Darius Valstad. After the magical accident that disfigured him and nearly drowned Pittsburgh, he drifts through his days, a wraith trapped in memories and depression. Until a stricken young man collapses on his driveway, one who claims Darius is his last chance.

For the first time in fifteen years, Darius must make a choice—leave this wild mage to his fate or take him in and try to teach him, which may kill them both. The old Darius, brash and commanding, wouldn’t have hesitated. Darius the exile isn’t sure he can find the energy to try.

Excerpt

It’s killing him. We have to end this.
Too cruel to force him to keep struggling.
I don’t understand. He should be finding a minor channel at least. Something. He shouldn’t be at this level of physical distress and still be able to throw so much.
We can’t condone pushing on. Dangerous for him and for everyone in a five-mile radius. We’ll have another Darius situation on our hands.
You’ll tell him?
As soon as he’s able to hear it, yes.
Toby drifted from gray misery to scarlet agony, the voices floating to him in fits and starts. His instructors, the director—they were talking about him and they sounded done with him, just like the previous six guilds that had tossed him to the curb. Wild magic. Unplaceable on the web of Arcana. Unsustainable and eventually deadly. The only remaining bets anyone could make now were how many people he took with him when he went out with a catastrophic bang.
Hands lifted him. The familiar sensations of stretcher and rolling followed him down into the dark.

“What’s this?” Toby peered at the papers on the rolling tray, not quite up to focusing through his pounding headache.
The director pulled a chair close and cleared his throat uncomfortably. “We discussed that this might be a possibility someday, Tobias.”
“We’ve talked about a bunch of stuff.”
Director Whittaker let out a sharp sigh.
“Not saying it to be a smartass, sir. I can’t get my eyes to read this just yet.” Toby shifted on the infirmary bed. His fifth stay in this wing of the guildhall and the mattresses hadn’t managed to grow any more comfortable. “Couple hours I should be able to.”
“Ah. My apologies.” The director returned to a concerned parental pose, hands clasped between his knees as he leaned forward. “These are your separation papers from the Montchanin Guildhall.”
Toby swallowed hard. “You’re giving up on me? Already?”
“I’m so sorry, Tobias.” Director Whittaker patted his arm. “The Kovar method is nearly infallible—”
“Nearly. You said nearly.” Despite his pounding head, Toby sat up, hanging on to the director’s hand as hard as he could. “Please don’t do this. You said you’d help me.”
“We said we would do the best we could. Wild magic…. It’s unusual, certainly, but cases of unplaceable wild magic like yours aren’t unheard of. We should have seen some sign of channeling by now. Some directed trickle that would have let us help you find your place in the web.”
Toby let go to fall back against the pillows, hurting, nauseated, and dizzy. His uncontrolled magical explosions, each one harder on him than the time before, had only been getting more volatile and unpredictable. “I don’t have anywhere else to go. Can’t I stay here? Until, well, until….”
“It’s too dangerous for the other students. For the staff and other guild members.” Director Whittaker took his hand again. “Tobias, you blew a hole in the guidance room’s wall today.”
Ten feet of weapons-grade Kevlar and steel—that shouldn’t have been possible. Holy crap. “Did I hurt anyone?”
“Not today. But I can’t risk lives any further. It’s reached that point where we’ve tried everything we could. When you feel up to it, read the packet. There are several wonderful hospice options nearby. Beautiful places where you’ll be cared for and made comfortable. The guild will take care of you and cover any expenses.”
Drugged to the eyeballs so I won’t do any more damage. Allowed to starve to death in the nicest possible surroundings. Toby closed his eyes, his exhausted brain banging up against walls of possibility, trying to find him a way out. All this time he’d been sure one of the guilds would find a way. They were the experts. Now? Now he was terrified. The experts were telling him he needed to accept his impending death. No, no, no, f*ck that. “Sir, who’s Darius?”
“Ah, you heard that, did you?” The director sat back and pulled out a microfiber cloth to give his glasses a meticulous cleaning before he went on. “Darius Valstad caused one of the greatest magical disasters in recent memory. He nearly destroyed Pittsburgh. He pulled magic too far from his channelings, the result much like a wild magic accident. The catastrophe was narrowly averted.”
“Oh. That sounds about as bad as it gets. What happened to him?”
“He nearly died. His guild status was revoked, his teaching of any more students forbidden.”
Toby turned that over a few times, his brain fumbling and dropping concepts along the way. “So, but he’s still alive?”
“As far as I know. He lives in isolation, oh, not far from here, with the promise that he will no longer attempt anything beyond personal magic.”
“But he was once like me? And he lived?” Toby knew it was conclusion jumping, but he was desperate enough to reach for anything.
The director’s sigh was slower this time, more melancholy. “Tobias, he found his channels long ago, both his major and minor Arcana. Yes, he lives because as long as he respects the web, his magic won’t tear him apart. He had some early success with teaching unplaceables, but Pittsburgh was the ultimate result of his unorthodox methods.”
“Yes, sir. Of course.”
Director Whittaker rose with one last pat to Toby’s shoulder. “Get some rest. We’ll talk again in the morning. Please keep in mind we’re not simply turning you out onto the street. We want to be certain you’re looked after properly.”
Toby nodded, no longer trusting his voice. He didn’t turn his head to watch the director leave, staring at the white ceiling tiles instead. Ugly ceiling tiles. Places where you have to lie in bed like hospitals and infirmaries should have nice ceilings with meadows and bunnies painted on them. I don’t want to die. Oh gods… I don’t want to die.

Carra’s Review

Boy, do I love a good M/M urban fantasy…and here in The Mage on the Hill, the author has done a spectacular job in crafting a unique and intricate world of magic and magic users that drew me in from the very first page.  It has an interesting premise, with the majority of magic users having a clear major arcana affinity and belonging to guilds.  But there are also those few who don’t fit into the guilds’ neat little boxes, either by having only a minor arcana affinity or none at all (known as a wild mage).

Toby hasn’t been able to channel anything at all, major or minor, and that doesn’t bode well for his future given the guilds’ narrow-minded, backward, and uncompromising view of those who have been deemed a wild mage.  Seeking out the reclusive Darius in a last-ditch effort to get help starts the two of them on a path of discovery fraught with dangers not just from the magic, but from those within the guilds who only see things in black and white.

The way this story unfolded, it held my rapt attention—I devoured it in one sitting.  I thought the intricacies of the magic in this world were well thought out, and while complex they were still easily understandable.  I really liked the cast of supporting characters and thought they brought more depth to the overall story with their specialities and insights.

As for the romance between Darius and Toby, I would have liked to have seen more page time devoted to relationship building.  The story takes place in a relatively short time period, and it felt like the basis of their relationship was more rooted in the intensity of the events surrounding  the discovery of Toby’s affinity.  Granted, in urban fantasy and paranormal stories I tend to give more leeway in relationship formation, but usually I reserve that more for fated mates rather than magical intensity.  I still really like the two of them together (I’m such a sucker for age gap matchups), and think they complement each other quite well.

Since this is the first book of the series, I’m definitely curious to see where the author plans to take things.  For The Mage on the Hill though, it’s hovering between 4 and 4.5 stars for me, and is a story I’d absolutely recommend for M/M urban fantasy readers 18+ (that’s for the language and some sexual content).  This was also the first book I’ve read by this author, and given how much I liked it I’m now loading up on more of her books ;-)
