Running Ember Cover

The Vargr Series, Book 8

They’d expected the run of the North to be just that—a run to pull the biggest bond of Alphas in thousands of years. What none of them had expected was to find secrets of the past buried in the old and scarcely touched nature of Scandinavia.

In one instance after another, the past tosses its puzzle pieces at them for the Völve to work with, and as they gather the clues, synchronicity aids by lining up strange occurrences.

The ones that are hit the hardest are Pack Alpha Steffen and Nol-Elakdon. With help from the bond, they both have to deal with the necessities of going against their ways to figure out what’s going on. Digging for answers unearths a corner piece, and they finally have an idea of what they’re up against.

Something forgotten. Something they don’t know. Something that simply can’t be true.

And the wind brings news for the Völve to hear: “Rigr, Rigr, it’s time to rise, for swans to land, and for eagles to fly. Valkyrie, Valkyrie, pick your warrior. It’s time for them to burn!”

Book 1: Slumbering Ember

Vargr 1 small

All Matt knows of his dad is that he was Danish and that he’d died in a motorcycle accident ten years earlier. When Matt’s sixteen and a half, his mother declares it important that he at least knows the other half of his heritage, so she sends him from the States to Denmark as an exchange student for a year.

Matt’s not overly excited. Matt’s a loner who doesn’t connect with people. Going to a foreign country was never a part of his plans, but he’d do it for her. He’d go to where she’d loved the only man in her life. The love that gave her Matt.

Everything he’s heard from his mom and read about Denmark and the area he’s going to live in did not prepare him for what he finds, though—a heritage that has an old Norse god on the family tree.

Please note that this is the second edition, and the "political chapter" has been heavily revised. Meaning deleted.

All his life, Matt had been alone with his mom, but the Vargr in him responds quickly to meeting his pack. His relationship with his lover Rasmus evolves, and he’s grown tight friendships with the other Vargr pups.

Matt has also started Alpha training and is being taught and guided in what that means for him and the ember that awoke in him far too early.

Pack Alpha Steffen keeps a close eye on their new pup and the powerful ember Matt arrived with. It worries him—not just for Matt but because of the lore and history of how the Vargr pack Sköll Hati had gotten their name.

He senses trouble on the horizon. When Matt’s ember reacts violently around a Geri Freki Alpha, Steffen must step in and step up. The trouble that lands on his doorstep is but the beginning of whatever he fears lays ahead.

Matt’s Sköll Hati pack has forcefully merged with the Geri Freki pack on their territory. The many changes challenge all Alphas, who step up to meet the needs of their pack. It challenges the young Alphas to grow. With a whispering ember, Matt’s gaining new insight into the Alpha he’s growing into.

Steffen will die for his pack’s prosperity. Standing the only conquering Pack Alpha in all of Sköll Hati, he’s proven that once before. Having fought to secure his pack again, he relishes in prosperity and fights to grow despite the changes to their structure. A Pack Alpha never stands alone, though. Other than seeing Matt rise to a challenge, Steffen’s focus on prosperity brings a new possible ally to their doorstep.

Frederik rose to have black fur, and he’s since then been renamed Hati. But he’s not doing well with fame. He yearns for something he doesn’t know and dreams of freedom he doesn’t understand.

Then he feels the pull of a new Alpha. All the fame and expectations that smother him seems bearable with the feel of that Alpha. And Hati needs him!

After a harsh time with both personal trials and developments, Matt is ready to start college among humans. However ill-equipped he feels around humans, a lonely Geri Freki pup at school pokes at the Alpha in Matt to step up.

Steffen and Tristan are struggling to keep up with the latest changes, and more are coming. With the Alphas of all rising and more and more details from the prophecies lining up, things aren’t slowing down. But Tristan brings an important ally with another piece of the puzzle.

Hati is finally with his Vargr mate, but his human side lacks a vital bond. The many changes since he found his mate and moved to a new pack are piling on, and the importance of balancing his Vargr and human side become more and more critical.

Book 5: Smoldering Ember

Vargr 5 small

The warrior Sköll has finally risen, and the power of the ember now drives Sköll as the four legendary wolves gear up to face their enemy. They won the first battle. That battle started a war.

It seems the lot in Matt’s life that every time he conquers a challenge, something new is thrust upon him. He finally stands the risen Vargr, Sköll. His fur shone beautifully white in the moonlight—a stark contrast to the blood looking black as it ran down his torso.

Hati is now driven by an individual ember, but its purpose has to save his mate from succumbing to bloodthirst. Hati needs to learn to channel their vision for the future as his mate rises with preparedness for war far exceeding what anyone had imagined.

Pack Alpha Steffen has his work cut out for him. Having the four legendary wolves on his territory isn’t easy. At least his Alpha mate, Regional Alpha Tristan, has contacts to aid the Alphas rising to take on the battle that no Pack Alpha could aid them in alone. But first…damage control.

Tristan isn’t the only one bringing in a powerful ally. Queue the epic soundtrack. The newly risen Cubi King of the West has an old school buddy who needs a hand in seeing a common vision through.

Ghosts from the past haunt them, along with Völsung whispers from the shadows. The most dangerous enemy, though, whispers from within.

Today was a seed of vision, planted by change more than a thousand years ago.

Five people with vastly different outlooks and wishes for that future found friends or enemies in each other.

To move forward without making the same mistakes again, the Alphas of all gather knowledge about that time and what happened then.

There are only three people left in the world to tell that story. One is the product of the past, one can hear what ripples through time, and one experienced it firsthand.

Gathered around a bonfire, history comes alive as those three educate the Alphas of all about the times of change that blew across the North after the Great Pack War had ended.

As Matt continues to learn to work with the Völsung born in him, he gathers knowledge, power, and the resources needed to secure the North.

For every battle he meets head-on, another is fought within. If not for Hati’s ember, crying out for his support, Sköll wouldn’t stand a chance.

Pack Alpha Steffen has promised to stand by his pup until whatever lies ahead has been seen through. Doubt whether he’s capable nags him as the pup shows off just how powerful Sköll has risen to become.

Tauran Darrica has been retired from the Valreus Sky Guard for four years following the Battle of the Broken Wings that resulted in the death of his dragon. Now, all Tauran wants to do is spend his days forgetting the past and gambling his way to an unsteady income.

So when his old general from the Sky Guard hunts Tauran down to request his help with staving off the increasingly aggressive wild dragon population, Tauran refuses. But a fire ruins his rented room and leaves him without a place to stay, and Tauran finds himself on the road to Valreus, after all.

Tauran is determined to stay as far away from dragons as he can get, but a starry-eyed young man from Sharoani, land of the wild dragons, might just ruin his plans.

Kalai Ro-Ani has spent his life watching the stars, knowing he could never reach them.

With his wild dragon Arrow, he sets out for the city of Valreus in the hope of building himself a better future than he could have stuck at the foot of the Kel Visal dragon temples.

But nobody told Kalai that only the Sky Guard is allowed to own dragons, so when Arrow kills a guard in Kalai’s defense, it looks like his adventure might be over before it can begin. But a chance encounter at the old Valreus archive offers Kalai the future he’d been hoping for. In the span of a single day, he has a home, a job, and a purpose.

In Valreus, something much bigger falls into his lap – along with a tall and striking Valrean man with a rather strange disposition.

A new, LGBT+ fantasy story from Zaya Feli, featuring dragons, aerial battles and epic journeys through dangerous wilderness.

Praise for Wild Sky

Double threat author and illustrator, Zaya Feli, paints a vivid picture of queer love in the time of dragons in Wild Sky
- Nicole Kimberling, award-winning author of Sea of Stars

From the author, Zaya Feli

The overarching theme is about how healing is possible despite severe damage. That some things may not be fixable, and that simply learning to persevere and find support and happiness where it exists can be enough.

Excerpt

Kalai took the steps up quickly, and Tauran tried to keep pace, wincing when the nerves in his left leg gave a solid protest.
“What are we doing?” Tauran asked, stopping at the top of the stairs. The room was mostly empty. A large bed in the center with the blankets tossed aside caught his gaze, and he found himself studying it longer than he’d meant to.
Damn, Tauran. Don’t think about the guy naked. You’ve only just met him. Maybe he could return later and find out if Kalai was interested in some casual fun. Skies, he hadn’t thought that way in years.
“Over here,” Kalai said. He moved to a sizable wooden box on the other side of the bed, lifting the top half off the box.
Tauran crossed the distance to him. The box radiated warmth. Leaning forward to look inside, all the heat rushed out of him like a sliced bag of grain.
Large. Oval. Deep red and covered in uniform scales.
An egg. A dragon egg.
Tauran stepped back. Bumped his heel against the mattress. “Why are you showing me this?” The words came harder than he’d meant them to.
Kalai blinked, and turned over the note from the envelope. It had just four words written on it:

Show him the egg.

“I’m just doing what the note says,” Kalai said, visibly startling when Tauran snatched the note from his hand and crumbled it.
“This is a mistake,” Tauran said, and turned. He marched to the stairs, his agitation making his limp worse, but he’d forgotten all about making a good impression. He knew what was coming. The fear, the sensation of being choked. He needed to get out, he needed air.

He needs to travel to the city of Serein and impart grave news that will bring war to the Empire, but without a horse, money, and with not a soul willing to help him, he has no choice but to line up with the common folk seeking paid work on the harvest.

As wagons roll into the market square and farmers choose day laborers, Winter is singled out for abuse by a brute of a farmer. The only man who stands up for him is the farmer's beguiling son, Adam, and on locking eyes with the swarthy young man Winter feels the immediate spark of attraction.

Winter soon realizes there is a reason he has been drawn to Blackdown Farm. The farmer possesses a precious item that was stolen long ago from Winter’s family, and he determines to retrieve it. He also cannot take his eyes off Adam, and as the young man opens up Winter can’t help wondering if Adam is just kind or his kind!

I’m a huge fan of Isobel Starling’s Shatterproof Bond series, so when I learned she had this fantasy romance coming out my interest was definitely piqued.  While the synopsis for the story caught my eye, there’s actually a lot more to Apple Boy than it implies.  The story is about the equivalent of around five hundred pages, and I’ll admit at times I was feeling the length.

Winter’s predicament is more than what it seems from the synopsis, and the full nature of what’s going on is slowly revealed over quite a long stretch of time.  I saw the story as three segments—the first being Winter’s introduction and experience at Adam’s family’s farm, next their journey from there to Serein, and finally the events that occur once they arrive.  Each segment had its own challenges, and in the end things are not fully resolved so yes, it’s basically a cliffhanger.  Though I knew this book was part of a new series, I didn’t realized the end would be left as open as it was…so just be prepared for that when you start.

Winter and Adam’s lives are quite the opposite of each other, with Winter coming from a privileged upbringing where he is the heir to a title while Adam lives with his family on their apple orchard farm.  Winter is used to living in an open, non-judgmental society; not so for Adam where same sex liaisons can result in death.  Winter opens up Adam’s life to so many new possibilities, and at the same time Winter’s experience in Mallowick opens his own eyes to the plights of those whose station falls well below his own.  This results in character growth for both men, spread out over the course of the entire tale.

The fantasy aspect starts to come into play towards the end of Winter and Adam’s time at the farm, and continues to build—albeit slowly—through the rest of the story.  There’s a lot of explanation to be found in terms of world building as well as the setup of Winter’s own situation, and for me that contributed to the slower pace of the story overall.

As far as the story itself goes, it gets 3.5 stars from me.  As for the narration though, Gary Furlong’s incredible voices with their range of accents was absolutely worth 5 stars.  He gave each character—no matter how minor—their own individuality, and was consistent throughout the story.  Listening to his narration made the more drawn out portions of the story easier for me to get through, and was overall a very enjoyable experience.

Apple Boy is meant for readers/listeners 18+ some adult language and sexual content.

Now Available: NOVA PRAETORIAN by N.R. Walker

★★★ NOVA PRAETORIAN IS OUT NOW ★★★

I love testing new waters and flexing creative muscles that I don't normally get to try. I've always swerved out of the strict contemporary lane every now and then, and this one is no different. Historicals are a niche market. Some people love them, some people don't care for them too much. But Nova is so much more than that. If you love a romance that can stand the test of time, with some action and intrigue thrown in, a little violence and a lot of love and steaminess, you'll LOVE Nova Praetorian.

Blurb

Quintus Furius Varus is one of the best lanistas in Rome. Tall and strong in build, fearsome in manner, and sharp of wit, he trains the best gladiators bound for the arenas of Rome. When Senator Servius Augendus seeks personal guards, he attends the Ludus Varus for purchase of the very best. He puts to Quintus an offer he cannot refuse, and Quintus finds himself in Neapolis, contracted as a trainer of guards instead of gladiators.
Kaeso Agorix was taken from his homelands of Iberia and delivered to Rome as a slave. Bought by a senator to be trained as a guard, his fate is handed to the man who would train him. Absent free will, Kaeso knows his life is no longer his own, though he soon realises the gods have favoured him when he learns his new master has a kind heart.
Quintus and Kaeso forge a bond that far exceeds the collar at Kaeso’s neck, and together they discover the senator’s move for promotion has an ulterior motive. Thrown into a world of politics and conspiracy, of keeping enemies close, they move against time to save Rome before traitors and the gods themselves see to their end.
And in doing so, see the dawn of the nova praetorian—the new guard—rise.
