Carra's Review

This anthology is a great mix of stories from so many of my favorite authors.  Some are peeks into characters from their previous books, others are totally new characters, but all will make you smile, swoon, and sigh.  Here’s my quick takes on each of the stories.

AE Via - An Unworthy Gift

This story struck just the right balance between angst and sultry while also delivering sweet at the same time.  Oh, how much I loved Spencer and Cole!  Though at first Cole seems like he’s trying too hard, later—after the sultry part—it flips to that bit of sweet, and eventually to full-on need.  4.5 stars.

Lane Hayes - Out For The Holidays

It was nice to see what basically amounted to a slice of Derek and Gabe’s life here, though that’s really all it was.  There was a small injection of angst between Derek and his mother, but beyond that it’s just a quick visit with the guys.  3 stars.

RJ Scott - Single Dad Christmas

Oh, oh, oh…angst and angst and angst (and a dash of cuteness from the kids)…and then SQUEEEE!  This story was everything and while I wanted to bonk Austin on the head for keeping his mouth shut, I loved Paul’s wish to Santa.  5 stars.

Eli Easton - Twelve Days of UPS

Awww...I loved the setup for this story with the gift packages.  It was a great way to slowly develop things between Paul and Dan, and made for such a sweet read.  4.5 stars.

Annabeth Albert - Must Be Santa

I’m one of those people who don’t really care for kids in the romances I read, but I was still happy to revisit Teddy and Nick and see how their relationship had progressed.  This was a sweet look at their chance at growing their family, with a dash of spice on the side.  4 stars.

Joanna Chambers - The First Snow of Winter

I’m the first one to admit that I’m always wary of historical M/M stories primarily due to how those in the LGBTQ+ community were treated in earlier eras.  This story avoided those types of drama, concentrating on Sam dealing with the loss of his arm and the chemistry still present between Sam and Jasper when they see each other again.  Truly enjoyable, and personally I’d love to see this expanded into a full-length novel.  5 stars.

Clare London - Five Gold Blings

A cute look at a fledgling fashion influencer and the delivery guy who believes in him, encourages him, and falls for him.  3.75 stars.

Posy Roberts - Sojourn with You

All right now…no fair teasing like that.  Now you’ve got me on the hook wanting a LOT more from Sawyer and Gregg!  4 stars.

Suki Fleet - Sometimes, Always

Peri and Echo are from the author’s story Sometimes There’s Stars, and even without having read that book it’s immediately apparent that the intensity between these two is sky-high.  While it did feel like I’d stepped into a story already in progress, I still became wrapped up in the powerful feelings so evident between them.  4 stars.

Garrett Leigh - No Place Like Home

This story centers on an existing couple from a prior book so I kind of felt thrown into the middle of things not knowing their history.  It was mostly a glimpse into their life now, and how dedicated they still are to each other.  3.5 stars.

Paws in the Snow

Exhausted from the waves of pain, Derick slowly packed up his backpack and tucked the bottle in the outer pocket. Zipping it up, he slung one strap over his shoulder and grabbed his coat. Carefully, he walked down the steps.

Though other students called out to him, he ignored them. Just not feeling strong enough to answer.

He leaned against the front row desks. Dropping his coat on one desk, he rubbed his fingers over his head and rubbed his neck.

Dark speckles filled his vision. Then the strange burning sensation returned to his eyes.

“Do you know what is happening to you, mon chaton?” Chevalier asked in his soft French-Canadian accent.

Lifting his head, Derick tried to blink through the speckle spots and burning. “Happening? Flu. Got flu.”

Chevalier shook his head. “Not the flu. Something special. Something that I don’t think you ever learned about, but now I can see it inside you. I can help you, but you must trust me. You will need to listen to me, follow me, and I’ll get you through what is happening.” He touched his fingers against Derick’s cheek. “Can you do that for me, mon chaton?”

“Will I feel better?”

“Oh, oui, better and stronger. That I can promise.”

His knees buckled when another wave of pain and cramps roared through his body. He groaned and collapsed.

“Oh, mon chaton, we’re running out of time,” Chevalier said when he caught him. He held Derick tight against his frame.

“Feel horrible… Help me, Professor—”

“Ben. Call me Ben.”

“Scared. Feel horrible.” Derick rested his head on Chevalier—Ben’s shoulder. He breathed in the soft fragrance of Ben’s cologne. Just the touch and smell of him comforted whatever happened deep inside him. “Don’t leave me.”

“Never, mon chaton.

Carra's Review (select stories)

Here's my review of several of the stories in the collection.  For the overall collection, I'd give it a 4-star rating.  Note this collection is meant for readers 18+ for adult language and sexual content.  Enjoy!

Count Down by JS Bright

Everything about Colin and Landyn was just right for me.  I liked that Colin wasn’t aware of what he was, while Landyn was the opposite.  The two of them just clicked together, with the expected physical chemistry.  My only “on the fence” portion was near the end of the story with Colin’s neighbor—I would have liked to have seen more background on who he was and the whole aspect of what he was doing.  I think though that the author could use this to eventually expand this story into a longer one down the road.  3.75*

The Last Kitsune by Melissa E Costa

Oh my goodness, I just LOVED this story.  It was so sweet, yet at the same time a bit sad, but in the end left me with a huge smile on my face.  I felt so sad for Kai as he was quite lonely, but as more details emerged during Shigeru’s stay and the whole truth came out, I reveled in what the two of them found together.  Through the writing I could feel the boundless joy they both experienced once Shigeru found his true form.  I would be thrilled if the author would choose to turn this into a full-length novel just to be able to spend more time with Kai and Shigeru.  5*

By the Moonlight by Megs Pritchard

Simply put, this was HOT.  I loved the fact that Jordy had been waiting for Stone since Stone was born. I loved how protective but not overbearing Jordy was with him.  I loved how much they craved each other, even though Stone didn’t understand why.  I just loved everything about this story.  And the intimate scenes are scorching hot—even with as short a time period as the story covers, the buildup of sexual tension between Jordy and Stone before they give in is intense.  I think you can tell I just loved this story in general ;-).  5*

Prey to the Fox by Jessie G.

Everything about this story screams classic shifter to me, and that’s one of the reasons why I loved it.  The combination of rabbit and fox when they are traditionally prey and predator, the ascension of an embattled runt of the litter to a loved and important member of the community, and the absolute love between Dario and Bastian…all of this made this story into something exceedingly enjoyable.  Besides, who wouldn’t love an adorable bunny and his just as beautiful fox mate?  5*

Finding His Groove by Sara York

I really liked the matchup of Avi and Win.  They are opposites in size which is always a great match, and once he figures out how to shift, Avi’s animal is simply magnificent—and in oh so many ways.  His family certainly underestimated him after he had gone so long without ever shifting, and I thought it was justice served when he finally came into his own.  4*

Paws in the Snow by Nicole Dennis

This is a lovely story about a young man who didn’t know he was a shifter being guided into his first shift.  The story concentrates on what he feels and how he reacts and adapts, though due to the short length of time covered readers will not get much further than that into Derick’s life.  Ben, his TA from one of his classes, is great as a mentor to help guide Derick and explain everything to him.  There’s no romance initiated during this story; however, if the author decides to expand this in the future to a full-length novel this would be a solid foundation upon which to build.  4*

H2H is a passion project that began as nothing more than a “what if” said among friends. Since then, across three volumes and with the involvement of twenty-six incredible authors of gay romance, the Heart2Heart anthologies have raised over $80k for LGBTQ charities around the world.

Because Heart2Heart is a charity project, all of the work involved in creating and promoting each volume is donated. A Special Excerpt from the opening and closing Heart2Heart Story by Jeff Adams & Will Knauss:

Story title: A Caller from Grand Rapids

A brief description of your story: Former hockey player Noah McCarthy has a good life in Grand Rapids as a newspaper reporter. His alter ego, Gene E. Del’Amp is the host of the popular podcast Wish of Your Heart. Noah enjoys helping humans, lycans, vampires, witches and anyone else with a good wish. What happens if the genie is suddenly the subject of a wish?

Excerpt

Noah

“Okay, ready to head into the last segment?” I asked my producer slash assistant Marc.

Recording the podcast was my favorite part of the week because I got to unleash a side of me I kept tucked away the rest of the time. Wish of Your Heart had developed a good, and still growing, following since it premiered just over a year ago. The show filled a niche for humans and those with some kind of extra talent to talk out their fears and hopes about making a connection. Offering your heart to someone was never easy, even between two humans. But it could be more daunting if you were matching between different shifter species or a vampire with a human or… any other combination. Wrapping up romantic desires into a wish seemed to work for those who called in.
Listeners really loved—or really hated, there was no middle ground—the host I created with Gene E. Del’Amp. The name was ridiculous as was the unidentifiable European-esque accent I used for him. All of that was deliberate because I didn’t want anyone to figure out that Gene and I, former pro hockey player Noah McCarthy, were the same person. That would cause far more trouble than it’s worth. Only Marc knew my secret identity.

“Let’s do it,” I said, still sounding like myself. I only pulled Gene out when we were actually recording.

“And we’re back recording in three, two, one.” Marc hit a button on his computer and the voicemail played in my headphones.

“Hi. This is Thomas. So, um, here’s the thing, Gene, I’ve fallen for the guy I work with. I know it’s a mistake. You’re not supposed to be into the boss. And I really love my job, so I don’t want to f*ck it up. What people don’t know is the boss is super sweet. He’s got a facade that’s snarky, but it’s all show. We work closely, and it’s a great relationship. I know he’s gay. Hell, we’ve even shared stories about guys we’ve dated.

“I’ve known him for over a year now, and I think we’d be good together. Every now and then, I’ll see a glint in his eye, like when I bring him his favorite latte or we talk about something we both like. It’s true, we even have a couple of shared hobbies. I wish I had the balls to ask him. What do you think, Gene? Can you grant me this so I take the leap? I’m willing to risk the job. I know you hate workplace relationships because of all the extra variables, but I listen all the time and sometimes wishes on the job come true.”

“Wow, Marc, you didn’t hold back for the last call, did you?” I spoke into the mic as Gene. Across the desk, Marc’s eyes danced with mischief along with a little something I couldn’t identify. He knew how to pick good voicemails. This one had potential workplace drama, a boss that might be too much of a friend, and the amount of pining in the voice that listeners would eat up. “You should see the look he’s giving me right now, waiting to see what I’m going to say.”

“Look? What look?” Marc added a smirk, one that even reflected in the tone of his voice. “I just want you to answer so we can wrap this thing up.”

What are your thoughts on being part of Heart2Heart volume 4?
After reading the stories in the previous three volumes, it was great to be asked to this particular cool kids’ table. Of course, since we have a podcast, it was a lot of fun writing the podcaster’s story.

🌈 - Camp fYrefly (multiple locations, summer camp)

“Camp fYrefly is a summer camp and leadership retreat designed for lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans-identified, two-spirited, intersexed, queer, and questioning youth, (LGBTQ2S+) and planned in part by a committee of the same youth it seeks to serve. Founded in 2004 by Dr. André P. Grace and Dr. Kristopher Wells, Camp fYrefly is designed to help youth develop the leadership skills and personal resiliency necessary for them to become agents for positive change in their schools, families, and communities.”

🌈 - Project 10 (youth services and advocacy, Quebec)

“Project 10 works to promote the personal, social, sexual and mental well being of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, transsexual, two-spirit, intersexed and questioning youth and adults 14-25.

Through advocacy and education, using a harm reduction approach, Project 10 aims to facilitate the empowerment of youth at individual, community, and institutional levels with a particular emphasis on supporting individuals and groups who experience multiple and intersecting oppressions.

Services are free of charge, confidential and anonymous, and are offered in English and French.”

🌈 - QMUNITY (local services, BC)

“A non-profit organization based in Vancouver, BC that works to improve queer, trans, and Two-Spirit lives. We provide a safer space for LGBTQ/2S people and their allies to fully self-express while feeling welcome and included. Our building serves as a catalyst for community initiatives and collective strength.”

These are all great Charities and we need to take care of our youth and the next generation. Love is Love. Be safe and kind. No one should have to suffer for who they are or who they love!!
