As Search for Complete left off, the birth of his twins had just completed Christopher. However, though he has what he had searched so long for, he now must deal with the associated costs, namely the unraveling of his relationship with Laura, the mother of his twins. The birth of the twins should have brought Laura joy, yet, instead, she finds herself on an intense emotional rollercoaster. Laura resents Christopher's happiness—resents that he is a better mother than she is. But most of all, Laura resents that the twins are Christopher's spitting image—nowhere does she see herself in them. Christopher fears his happiness in becoming a father has become Laura’s undoing. As he tries to help her adjust to the reality of their situation, Laura struggles to find herself in the tangled mess of their relationship.

Christopher has settled into life as a single father to his twins, Loren and Christine. Content with his life, he is contemplating the imminent return of their mother Laura, who has been traveling through Europe for nearly a year, when he meets Benjamin, a direct descendant of the sun. Suddenly, his contentment is upended as he tries to understand the reason for their meeting. Despite what Benjamin says, that they are meant to be together, Christopher initially tries to hold Benjamin at arm's length, believing that he is only to be for Benjamin what Joseph was to him—a friend and mentor.

Excerpt from Book 1

I began to question accepting Laura’s invitation when I heard the noise coming from the backyard as we approached the house. I disliked crowds, and it sounded like an immense crowd was on the other side of the gate.

People were everywhere—seated on lounge chairs scattered around the patio or at the rectangular dining table or milling about in various groups—talking loudly over the blaring music. Laura’s voice broke through the noise.

“I don’t see Peter anywhere. He might be inside. Shall we find him?”

“By all means. I would feel uncomfortable attending his party without meeting him.”

I followed Laura into the house. As we passed through the living room, my eyes fell on a few framed photos of a handsome couple on the wall.

In the kitchen, a solitary male figure was removing a tray of croissants from the oven.

“Hello, Peter.”

As he turned around, I recognized Peter as one of the men in the photos. Tall and slender, with dark hair and a mustache waxed into handlebars, there was a dapperness to him that I found pleasing.

“Hey, Laura. Lovely to see you!”

After setting the hot tray down, Peter hugged her.

“Peter, I want you to meet Christopher. He just moved here from Seattle and works with me at the station.”

“How do you do, Peter?“

Having grown used to the reaction my presence caused, I smiled patiently as Peter, unable to speak right away, shook my offered hand.

“I hope you do not mind my crashing your party. Laura assured me that you would not object to her bringing me.”

“No, of course, I don’t mind.”

The words tumbled out one on top of the other.

“Is there anything we can do to assist you?”

“No, I have it all under control, thanks. Please help yourself to the food and drinks out on the patio.”

“We will. Thanks,” Laura said, taking my arm and steering me back through the living room.

“Peter is very nice,” I commented as we stepped through the doors and headed towards the drinks table. “Can I make you something?”

“A mimosa, thanks. Yes, Peter’s a sweetie.”

We stood sipping our drinks as I scanned the crowd of mostly men, a mix of young and old, before Laura took me around, introducing me to the people she knew.

I instinctively searched their eyes for the essence of another while ignoring Laura’s scrutinizing gaze.

Laura needed to use the bathroom, so she left me standing under the large Ficus tree where we had sought shade from the sun. Within minutes of her departure, I was surrounded by a large group of people vying for my attention. Carrying on multiple conversations was challenging, but I did my best to make each person feel they had my full attention.

He caught my attention on the periphery of my vision: tall and well-built, resembling the small statue of the god Mars that sat on the table in Joseph’s shop. Our eyes met, and I felt my heart skip a beat, seeing something flash in his eyes. Smiling hopefully, I extended my hand to him.

“Hello, my name is Christopher Dunn.”

As he shook my hand, I took the opportunity to search his golden-brown eyes. My initial hope turned to disappointment, for while something was there, it was not another’s essence. Though disappointed, I was intrigued.

“Davidmartelli.”

He slurred the two names into one in his haste to get the words out.

As I gazed into his eyes, the feeling of a purpose to our meeting appeared—first Laura and now David.

“It is a pleasure to meet you, David Martelli,” I said, saying his name distinctly.

David blushed attractively, causing a twinge in my heart.

“Can I get you a drink?”

He looked so crestfallen when I held up my cup that I was tempted to down my drink and ask him for another.

“Oh, you have one.”

“I do, but I appreciate you asking.”

I gave him a smile to back up my words. It was apparent that David was struggling to find something to say, the frustration evident in his handsome features. I wanted to get him away from the people surrounding us and talk to him alone, but I did not see how I could do so without offending everyone else.

Conscious of the eyes watching us, David blushed again and backed away.

For some reason, I knew that this behavior was out of character for him. Watching him walk away, I hoped we would meet again as I wanted to discover what I saw in his eyes.

Excerpt

SATURDAY AFTERNOON—FLOUNDERING

My erections aren’t what they used to be.

Well, Dr. S told me to write about the first thing that comes into my mind, so it’s what I’m doing. “Don’t think. Just write,” he said. “Stop censoring yourself, Viktor. This will help you in your therapy too, Viktor.”

Okay, okay. If that’s what the shrink ordered, let’s see if this works. We’re supposed to listen to our shrinks, right? That’s their job, right? They know how to get us out of whatever f*cking funk we’re in, right?

So here we go. I’m writing about the first thing that comes to my mind and it’s my erections. Here it is, a lovely Saturday afternoon, sun shining, snow melting, spring a’coming, a perfect time to enjoy life. And what am I doing? Sulking in my apartment obsessing about my c*ck.

Hell of a problem to have on a day like today, isn’t it? Sh*t, be honest, Viktor. You’re supposed to be honest with this writing thing, aren’t you? That was Dr. S’s other directive, wasn’t it? Honesty. He was full of directives last session, wasn’t he? Oh well, maybe I need some directives.

So where was I? Oh yes. Gorgeous day, sh*tty mood, focusing on my c*ck when I should be enjoying life.

Oh, come on. It’s not just about my c*ck. I know that. After all, I did my share of screwing around when I was younger. Not that I was the biggest stud around in my heyday, but during those few glorious weeks my sex life got going, I learned how to have a good time. Yes, I did! But then I met Gio and fell in love. And he fell in love with me. And we had twelve years of bliss—more or less—until he left me last year.

“And I’ve been floundering ever since. Floundering? Ha! Flopping around is more like it. So I’ve been seeing Dr. S—ahem, Dr. Singsirinavin—I’ve been seeing him to help me out of this predicament. Seems like a nice enough guy, serious, quiet, with a scrawny body and a bit of an accent, though I’ll be damned if I know from where exactly. These shrinks never tell you anything about themselves, do they? I’ve been seeing Dr. S for a year already, and you would think by now I’d have an idea, but I don’t. To tell the truth, I don’t have much of an idea about anything, including whether he’s helping me.

“But I’m trying. Goddamn it, I’m trying, you’ve got to give me that. Didn’t put all my eggs in one basket, either. Went to my primary-care guy too, to complain about my cock. Dr. Agnostulopolini. Different accent, different mystery country. Had to change doctors when my cheapo company switched insurances and I had to find someone new. He doesn’t know anything about me and doesn’t seem to care, either. Every time I ask a question, the side of his face twitches like he’s having a stroke. “Doctor,” I said last time, “my libido seems to have disappeared.”

“You know, it does fall off with age,” he says. Translation: you’re getting old.

“But not this suddenly, Doctor. Could it be the new blood pressure medicine you prescribed?” Translation: F*ck you. Don’t give me that you’re-getting-old sh*t. I’m fifty. That’s not old.”

Review & Giveaway: COAST TO COAST by RJ Scott & V.L. Locey (Arizona Raptors #1)

Length: 57,412 words
Cover Design: Meredith Russell

Blurb

When opposites attract, it’s not just the team that’s in for a shake-up.

When a stipulation in his father’s will throws Mark back into a family that disowned him, he has only two things on his mind; buying his way out of contractual obligations and running in the opposite direction as fast as he can. When neither option pans out, he finds he is now a one third owner of the struggling Arizona Raptors hockey team, and that is just about the worst thing he could have happened to him. Not only does he hate hockey, but the Raptors are a bottom-of-the-league team, rife with jealousies and anger in a locker room that only knows self-pity. How is he supposed to help turn things around when the only way to start fixing things is to form an alliance with the estranged siblings he’d run from fifteen years earlier?

Then there’s Rowen Carmichael, a stubborn, opinionated, irritating man with superiority issues and questionable taste in music. Butting heads with Rowen, who he’d never even wanted to hire in the first place, is one thing, but there is no way in hell that he will allow the growing attraction to the new coach become anything more. Until with everything on the line, he has to make decisions that will change his life forever.

After years of collegiate coaching, Rowen is given an offer that he simply can’t refuse, although perhaps he should. When he’s presented with the chance to take one of the worst teams in the league and mold them into a future cup contender, the challenge is just too alluring to pass up. He leaves his beloved Ontario behind and moves west to the arid city of Tucson where he is faced with a broken team, shoddy management, and players overflowing with resentment and bigotry.

Never in his twenty years of hockey has he ever seen such a raging dumpster fire of an organization. Yet there’s something about this team and this city that compels him to roll up his sleeves and start dismantling. He has his eye on a new associate coach that’s bound to makes waves, and several key players who should be sent packing. Now all he has to do is convince the new owners of the team that his choices are for the best. If only Mark Westman-Reid, one of three siblings who now own the Raptors, wasn’t so damned rock-headed, so damned snooty, and so damned appealing his job might be a bit easier.

Carra's Review

I loved this matchup.  A bit of opposites attract, an age gap, and oh yes…hockey.  If that’s not enough to pique your interest, let’s throw in some sneaking around, family drama, and a cameo from everyone’s favorite from the Harrisburg Railers?  Familiar names with some fresh, intriguing new faces while a romance brews—all in a hockey setting.  Yep, I’m hooked on another series by these authors again.

Rowen is very sure of himself, he knows exactly what needs to be done and he’s supremely confident on how to turn the Raptors around.  Confident—NOT cocky.  Mark though has other ideas—even if he knows hardly anything about hockey.  What he does know is business; it’s his forte, and he’s determined to use his strengths to help turn the team around as well.  Now for them to just agree on how to get there…easier said than done.

The conflict between them does help ramp up the attraction though, leading to stolen moments and liaisons in interesting places.  All while a relationship (gasp!) starts to develop between them, even if that’s now what Rowen is looking for.

As the first book in this new spinoff series, the authors did a great job putting together this new team setting, complete with a solid cast of supporting character, several of whom have excellent potential for their own stories.  You’re also going to find an unwanted one…but for those who are already familiar with the Harrisburg Railers series, you’ll definitely want to see what happens to tie up that loose end.

Coast to Coast had my attention from cover to cover, and was a 4.5-star read for me.  Even though it is a spinoff from the authors’ previous series, you don’t necessarily need to have read previous stories to understand this one…though as I’m sure you were expecting me to say, I would highly recommend reading the Railers series, and probably Ryker from the Owatonna U. series as well so you get to know some of the supporting characters.  This story is for readers 18+ for adult language and sexual content.

Book Release-Review & Giveaway: THIS IS NOT A LOVE STORY by Suki Fleet

Length: 96,000 words approx.
Cover Design: Aaron Anderson

Blurb

When fifteen-year-old Romeo's mother leaves one day and doesn't return, he finds himself homeless and trying to survive on the streets. Mute and terrified, his silence makes him vulnerable, and one night he is beaten by a gang of other kids, only to be rescued by a boy who pledges to take care of him.

Julian is barely two years older than Romeo. After running away from an increasingly violent homelife, he makes some difficult choices and ends up selling himself on the street to survive. Taking care of Romeo changes him, gives him a purpose in life, gives him hope, and though he tries to be strong and keep his troubles with drugs behind him, living as they do is slowly destroying him, and he begins to doubt he can be strong enough.

This is the story of their struggle to find a way off the streets and stay together at all costs. But when events threaten to tear them apart, Romeo knows he must find the strength within himself to help Julian (and not let their love story turn into a tragedy).

Carra's Review

This book is without a doubt one of the most emotionally difficult books I’ve ever read.  I’m going to warn you right up front—this is a million leagues opposite of light reading.  It is actually distressing, upsetting, and at times frankly disturbing, but even given all that there is the tiniest glimmer of hope too.  But just so you know?  I was a blubbering, tear-streaked mess from about 20% in until the very end.  But I’ll still recommend this book to anyone who thinks they can handle it…just be prepared for a beyond disconcerting look at what goes on away from your own cozy, safe homes.

The author paints a graphic picture of life on the streets, and while this story is set in London it could represent anywhere (a fact that is dismaying in itself).  The writing style is expressive and made me feel like I was fully enveloped in the setting.  Romeo’s plight—and by extension Julian’s—is laid fully bare and in such a way that it is impossible not to feel for them both…along with almost every other person in their situation.  It’s plainly illustrated how their innocence has been unequivocally stripped, and how once one gets to the point they have that it’s an unforgiving vicious cycle to try to break free.

Even give their bleak situation, there is still a tenderness between Romeo and Julian that slowly presents itself, even amongst their desperation.  Their story is NOT a romance in any traditional sense; you’re just hoping that they’re going to make it from one day to the next.  No, that is not an exaggeration.

You might think that with such a dark, emotional, disquieting read that it might negatively affect my opinion of the book.  You’d be dead wrong though—this story is overwhelming and powerful, and while I may now be all puffy-faced and wishing I owned stock in a tissue company, this was a 5-stars-is-not-enough read for me, and has made it onto my Top Recommendations list.

I would highly recommend you’re in the right frame of mind before starting this book; you’ll need to be prepared for a lot of darkness.  While there is finally a point of relief, it’s going to take you about 98% of the way to get there.  If you’re ready for that kind of weighty story, then definitely add this one to your library.  And if you weren’t tipped off by my review, this book is meant for readers 18+ for adult language, sexual content, drug use, and a very frank look at life on the streets.

Feature Post

Check out interesting snippets from a recent article published on Tripfiction as Marilyn Baron shares her love of Italy and Greece.
I love to travel and set most of my books in places I've visited. I've set three romantic thrillers in foreign locales...and my latest book, released in January 2018, The Siege: A Novel, set in Florence, Italy, and Chania, on the Greek island of Crete. Setting is always like a character in my books.
-----------------------
The Siege, a contemporary woman's fiction,... transports the reader back in time to World War II Crete, so it has historical elements and it is also a thriller (when the book opens, the hero and heroine are trapped in his honeymoon suite during a terrorist attack on their hotel in Florence, Italy).
-----------------------
When I decided to write The Siege, I interviewed the man whose family was from Rhodes, and who generously shared their story about emigrating from the island, memories of his visit to Rhodes and life in the Sephardic Jewish community.

An Excerpt from the Book

Take an inside look at The Color of a Silver Lining. Read an excerpt from the book.
Chapter 10
It had been two full days, and the reporters were still outside my house.

Louise and I took cover indoors. I'd planned to keep her home from school anyway for a full week after the accident, and I'd asked for sick days at the hospital. Thankfully we had a private fully-fenced backyard with tall trees, so we were able to go outside with Leo and get some fresh air in a safe place with no cameras pointed at us.

One good thing came from our self-imposed lockdown: We had plenty of time to get creative with crayons. Over the course of two days, Louise drew dozens of pictures of her visit to heaven, and I tacked each one to the wall outside her bedroom.

To a stranger, they might have looked like any other drawings by a five-year old because they were images of colorful rainbows and yellow suns, trees and tall buildings-just like what she'd described to me in the park. But to me, I saw something more.

Each time she finished a new picture, she handed the page to me and said, "This isn't as good as the real thing. I don't think I can draw it."

"Would it help if you had something better than crayons?" I asked, encouraging her to continue. "What about paint?"

"That would be good."

"Let's go to the art store tomorrow," I suggested.

In the meantime, she drew hearts everywhere to surround herself and her grandfather, who held her hand wherever they were-in the sky above the clouds or in an orchard with sunlight filtering through pink apple blossoms or rabbits in the tall grass. I could almost hear the sound of insects buzzing, grass swishing against my legs...

And she always drew a mustache on her grandfather.

By the end of the second day, the entire hallway was papered with Louise's colorful crayon illustrations, but now she was painting with oils on canvas-using an easel I'd purchased at the art store.

I spent a lot of time in the hallway, studying her creations, which she produced at an alarming rate. She drew birds and trees and meadows with colorful wildflowers and sparkling drops of dew. Oceans with turquoise water, dolphins and seagulls. Mountains with white, snow-capped peaks. Sunsets with spectacular clouds and silver linings.

On the third day, when I woke at six am to the sound of rain pelting against my window, I donned my bathrobe, went to the living room and peered through the slats in the blinds. To my relief, the street in front of my house was deserted. The reporters and news vans had departed.

Knowing my sister was an early riser on school days, I called her. She told me to turn on the television because it appeared we were no longer the top news story on every station. Weíd been bumped aside by an earthquake in California the night before. I wasn't happy about the devastation, of course, but I was thankful to have our privacy back.
