Spotlight & Giveaway: THE SIEGE by Marilyn Baron

The Siege: A Novel
THE SIEGE: A NOVEL
Award Winning Author Marilyn Baron
Genre: Contemporary, Women's Fiction, Romantic Suspense, Mystery, Historical
Publisher: The Wild Rose Press
Publication Date: January 8, 2018
A journey of self-discovery leads to love and passion in the search for a family's hidden past...
Artist Theia Constas receives a tour of Italy from her grandmother as a college graduation present. Before she departs, her ya-ya's deathbed revelation of a cache of WW II photographs and love letters extends Theia's itinerary to Crete in search of her unknown grandfather, a promising artist who studied under Chagall but didn't survive the war.
Wade Bingham, an actuary who always follows the rules and calculates the odds, finds himself alone on his honeymoon trip, wondering why his fiancée jilted him at the last minute.
In the wrong place at the wrong time when their hotel in Florence, Italy, is besieged by terrorists, the two strangers find themselves thrust together in Wade's honeymoon suite. Immediately attracted to each other, Wade conducts a siege of his own to win Theia's heart.
"This is a remarkable story and one worth reading. You won't be disappointed."
- Gabrielle Sally for The Romance Reviews
"I highly recommend this fast-paced novel to readers who like historical backgrounds and rich descriptions of exotic regions. The romance adds spice and the ending satisfies."
- Susan Coryell, Amazon Reviewer
Ms. Baron did her homework and travel to make this book so interesting. I could "see" the sites of Greece, and through fact and fiction two stories came to life.
- Maxine, Amazon Reviewer

Feature Post

Check out interesting snippets from a recent article published on Tripfiction as Marilyn Baron shares her love of Italy and Greece.
I love to travel and set most of my books in places I've visited. I've set three romantic thrillers in foreign locales...and my latest book, released in January 2018, The Siege: A Novel, set in Florence, Italy, and Chania, on the Greek island of Crete. Setting is always like a character in my books.
-----------------------
The Siege, a contemporary woman's fiction,... transports the reader back in time to World War II Crete, so it has historical elements and it is also a thriller (when the book opens, the hero and heroine are trapped in his honeymoon suite during a terrorist attack on their hotel in Florence, Italy).
-----------------------
When I decided to write The Siege, I interviewed the man whose family was from Rhodes, and who generously shared their story about emigrating from the island, memories of his visit to Rhodes and life in the Sephardic Jewish community.

“Go back to your room,” the American tour director ordered, shouting at the woman.

“I can’t get the door to open,” Theia protested, thrusting her key card at him in frustration.

The tour director hurriedly took the proffered card in sweaty hands and tried the lock, which didn’t click.  He jammed the key card into the slot again, to no avail.

A man opened the door and stuck his head out of the room. “What’s wrong? Is this some kind of a fire drill?”

“It’s no drill. Get back in your room and shelter in place until I give the all-clear. Don’t open the door to anyone.”

The tour director returned Theia’s card. “Get back in your room with your husband.”

“This is my room, but he’s not my husband,” Theia insisted.

“There must be some kind of mistake,” the man in the room announced. “This is my room.”

The tour director grabbed the woman’s key card again and examined the key holder. He shook his head, rolled his eyes, and looked at Theia like she was a recalcitrant child. “You’re on the wrong floor, miss. This is Room 515. You’re in Room 415.”

“I’m sorry.” Theia blew out a breath and turned to leave. The tour director blocked her way.

“Excuse me, but I need to get back to my room.”  Tears of exhaustion pooled in her eyes. She wanted to scream.

“I’m afraid you can’t go anywhere. We’ve disabled the elevators for your safety, and hotel security is blocking the stairs, for now.” He ushered her into Room 515 and pushed her into the arms of the man standing at the door.

Praise for Finding Rose Rocks

The name of the book comes from a type of mineral formation found almost exclusively in Oklahoma....and has a beautiful backstory to it. The literature standard is written with depths of emotional dilemmas, and I believe that whatís makes this book stand out.
- S. J. Main, Amazon Reviewer
The flow of the story is flawless as far as I am concerned. Love and life is precious, but it will never be flawless. I highly recommend this read. It is a great one!
- deb B, Amazon Reviewer
This is the kind of book youíll want to curl up with on a nice comfy chair beside a fire on a cold winterís day. A lovely romance about getting a second chance at love later in life.

Book Excerpt

Take an inside look at Finding Rose Rocks with this thrilling excerpt.
Jennifer refused to let Ben's ordeal revive her old jellyfish phobia. She changed into her swimsuit and grabbed a towel. She'd be most visible in front of the lifeguard tower, so it's where she entered the surf and forded the mild current until she reached the choppy calm beyond the breakers. Alone save for a curious seagull, she let the sea rock her in their guarded reunion. Fellow creatures shared the water with her, but she ignored them and let them do the same. Children's squeals and deeper adult voices carried over the waves and reached her submerged ears in wavering echoes. She was a peace there. From time to time she drifted off course, and a dozen lazy back strokes realigned her with the lifeguard tower. Jennifer's astrological element was water, emotional and intuitive. She'd grown up with her mother's belief in such notions, and she would never quite shake them. Troy was earth, strong and steady, grounded, of the land. Water and earth were compatible. Jennifer should have nurtured Troy, supplied him with life-giving sustenance rather than running off to let him face the summer's drought without her. Ben's element was air. She'd never asked him his sign, but she knew. He was a rare winged creature too elusive for her with his almost indiscernible touch and the hint of scintillating breath on her bare breasts. Jennifer held herself partially to blame for Ben's accident. Before she'd come along he didn't go into the ocean, instead content to stroll along its shoreline. He'd wanted to be with her and followed her into her watery realm. She'd led him to danger like a siren. He'd mentioned his allergy to bee stings in an offhanded way, making little of it. She should've honed in on the subject, asked what he carried in his faded blue backpack. The signs were there and she'd paid no attention.

Jennifer checked her position in the water, found all to be well, and returned to her thoughts. If she went back to the Lazy J Ranch, would she and Troy reunite or would she end up back in Oklahoma City where she'd started? Trading California for a cowboy? She'd have to be crazy, or crazy in love with a man whose only connection to the ocean were waves of flaxen wheat and a prairie's endless sea of tall grass.

Something brushed Jennifer's leg, and she bolted upright. A piece of kelp bobbed beside her and she flung it away. She'd become chilly anyway and made her way to shore.

Excerpt

When I read about the director’s tragic death on the Internet, I ran into my home office and took out a dusty, laminated ID card from a desk drawer I hadn’t opened for years, not since I’d left the prison system. I blew off the dust and detritus and examined my picture. Was that really me? I looked pretty good there all those years ago. So fresh and hopeful and thin! Then the world was full of possibilities.
That was before all the secrets and lies, secrets I’d hoped to take to the grave. Secrets I had kept, until now. Secrets that informed my life and all the decisions I’d made up until this point, from where I lived to who I’d marry. And I’m the worst about keeping secrets, as my kids like to remind me.
But now the director was dead, killed in the crash of the small plane he was piloting, along with his wife, Miss Julia. What is that expression, Dead people can’t tell tales? Maybe it was time for the truth to come out. The truth I’d kept bottled up inside me for years. The truth about the brutal death of Judge Savannah Braddock, still an unsolved case, as far as I could tell. I’d never told anyone about it or the part I’d played in the coverup. And not a day in my life went by that I didn’t see her partially clothed, beautiful but bloody body lying there on the bed and think about what had happened that morning.
