New Release-Review: LOVE OF THE HUNTER by V.L. Locey

LOVE OF THE HUNTER
by V.L. Locey

Blurb

* A retelling of the myth of Orion*

Will the night skies be forever changed?

Those upon Earth would assume the life of a Greek god is a walk through Elysium. They would be terribly wrong. Apollo, the golden son of Zeus, is far from home, banished from Olympus to live and train with the Titan, Helios. To compound his misery, Apollo is still mourning the loss of his first love, Hyacinthus. Life becomes a daily routine of shame, drudgery, and abuse until the hunter Orion appears at the eastern end of the world, seeking the healing touch of a Titan.

When Helios refuses to aid yet another offspring of the usurping gods, Apollo hides Orion and heals the hunter as best as his fledgling powers allow. Blinded eyes mend slowly, and the two young men find themselves falling in love as the seasons go by. But the gods of Olympus see all, and Sky father Zeus disapproves of the budding relationship. Can their love stand against the disapproval and fury of the god of men?

Carra's Review

I am completely drained and devastated after finishing this book.  Do you know how hard it is when you share a home with other people and you try to keep your tears to yourself?  Like, snot-nosed, epically cascading tears?  That was me.

I love mythology, especially the Greek pantheon (and by default the Roman).  I snap up any stories I find based on them, and I love seeing different authors’ interpretations and how they tweak them to give readers a new take on the classics.

Here, Apollo’s prior relationship with Hyacinthus and the latter’s death has shattered Apollo.  The author takes us along as he grieves, and through his meeting Orion and the relationship that develops between them.  Complicating things is Apollo’s father Zeus and his unmoving stance on same-sex relationships, and how he makes Apollo suffer because of this.

Given that these are Greek gods and goddesses we are dealing with, their egotistical, self-centered, holier-than-thou nature shines through.  Even with Apollo being shown in the best light possible, he still carries a bit of that air of believing he is of higher standing than others and basks in the adoration of his followers.  Yet I still was on his side and hoping he would have his happiness in the end.

I should have reminded myself that there are way too many stories in mythology that are tragic.  To be fair though, I was warned before starting that this would not be a romance; me and my eternally, hopefully optimistic nature when it comes to relationship though still held out hope.  Silly girl.

Love of the Hunter wreaked havoc with my emotions, leaving me in tears for the last few chapters.  And yet, it was still a 5-star read—you can’t make me feel SO MUCH and think I would give anything less.  Creative, intensely passionate, and highly emotional, this is definitely a must-read and probably my favorite ugly-cry book.  This story is meant for readers 18+ for adult language and sexual content.

Blurb

No matter how far you go, love will always lead you home again.

The world has changed quite a bit since Carl Cimino was a young man in Port Plechard. The small Connecticut coastal town once had everything that he held dear: his family, his friends, his hockey team, his school, and his first love, Mike Rinnert. Back then gay boys didn’t parade along the rocky shores in bright rainbow swim trunks. They hid their shame then moved away or married a nice girl and pretended to be happy. After a dismal marriage attempt and a lackluster playing career that ended with an equally unsatisfying coaching job, Carl is called back to Port Plechard to attend Mike’s funeral and swears that he’s just seen a ghost.

Either that or he’s had one too many sips of his father’s homemade wine. He soon discovers that the spirit hovering around Mike’s grave isn’t a phantom at all, it’s Tigh, Mike’s much younger brother. Tigh is nearly an exact replica of young Mike right down to his dark sensual eyes, wavy hair, and lips that beg to be kissed. The two men are drawn to each other immediately, but there’s more than one hurdle to overcome: a sizeable age difference, small-town gossip, personal demons, family problems, and a hurricane just to name a few.

When Colorado Penn finds an unexpected package on his front step, his life will be changed forever.

Colorado Penn is living the dream. Starting goalie for the Arizona Raptors when in season, lead singer for a hard rock band when summer rolls around. He’s the quintessential free spirit who’s making sure he enjoys all the carnal blessings of his athleticism, and gritty singing voice. Now the Raptors are moving into their first playoff appearance in years, but the arrival of an unexpected package means that hockey may have to take a backseat to something way more important. Instead of the usual undergarments from adoring fans, he finds a newborn baby with a small note tucked under her carrier, naming him as the father. He refuses to give up his daughter and is determined to be the kind of father he’d dreamed of having. But to keep Madeline, he’ll need help, and he’ll need it fast. Enter handsome emergency manny, Joseph. They may be opposites, but Colorado starts to see that Joseph’s stable, calm influence makes his chaotic lifestyle choices seem less appealing. There’s something about the man that soothes not only his infant daughter but also the wild child inside Colorado.

Joseph is one year away from getting his degree in planetary science, working cover shifts at the planetarium, and pulling in income with short term manny gigs. Stars collide as he provides emergency childcare for the wild man of hockey, a man who moves so fast through life that he doesn’t know how to stop. Homeless, and caring for his niece, Emma, fate brings Joseph into Colorado and baby Madeline’s life. Madeline is a sweetheart, and Colorado is trying his hardest to make the best decision for his baby girl. He offers his home and an indecent salary, to keep Joseph in his life until summer’s end. Colorado brings mysticism and metal to Joseph’s sanctuary of science, but somehow Joseph needs to tame this shooting star and create a family. Nothing in the contract said Joseph had to fall in love to make that happen, but when it’s time for him to leave, will the void in his heart ever heal, or will it remain as cold as space itself?

The most difficult of life’s choices might be the one we make when we open our hearts to another.

Landon Reece is the ultimate Manhattan athlete. The elite goalie for the New York Metros is rich, handsome, generous, and purposely single. His life has been a whirlwind of fancy cars, beautiful people, museum galas, and championship rings. Landon now has one year left on his multi-million dollar contract, and the talk around town isn’t good. Despite carrying his team to the pinnacle of success, the aging goalie is hearing rumors that his contract might not be renewed next season. Hoping to curtail the rumors and show the Metros he still has what it takes, Landon and his agent set up a press tour to hopefully remind the fans—and Metros’ management—just how important Landon is to New York City.

During one of a hundred appearances on the tour, Landon finds himself a guest on the newest and hottest late night talk show in the Big Apple. There he meets Montrell Pittman, leader of the show’s band, A Brush of Blue, and his senses come alive. He resolves to do his best to woo the upbeat, sexy musician who ignites his blood like no other person ever has. As the two men grow closer, Landon’s ice time shows how happy his new romance is making him. Then a tragedy rocks his world, and Landon finds himself wallowing in despair and in danger of losing the man who might be the only one who can clear his blues away.

When love is on the line, the worst decisions can end up having the best endings.
Tate Collins, an all-American hockey phenomenon, was the highly marketable face of Dallas hockey. Loaded down with endorsements and playing his best game, he was a superstar and a household name. No one ever expected him to fail, but overnight, after the worst decision of his life, everything spirals out of his control. Abruptly, his reputation is in tatters, and he’s traded to the Arizona Raptors in a shocking move. Brushing off the wild and unfounded accusations that he faces on social media, and stuck on the second line, he keeps his head down and works hard to earn his spot. Tate knows he can make a difference if only his teammates would let him. Something has to change for him to earn their respect, but falling for the captain might not be his best move.

Vladislav Novikov has been called many things over his long and illustrious career, but the new nickname of Iceberg seems to fit best. Perhaps it’s due to his icy blue eyes, or the way he rams into opposing players as he defends his goalie. Or maybe it’s because of his cool demeanor when not playing the game he loves. Whatever the reason, it’s why he’s the perfect team captain for this wild bunch of puck-pushers. His perfectly controlled life is smooth as ice until Tate Collins rides into Tucson with his apple pie ways and those damn dimples. The young superstar immediately catches his eye. Despite knowing better than to start something with a teammate, the big, bad Iceberg is about to have that chilly veneer around his heart melted away by Tate one sweet kiss at a time.

Carra's Review

It’s back to the Arizona Raptors for some more hockey romance, this time focusing on the team’s captain, Vlad, and their newest incoming player, Tate.  With a bit of controversy following Tate from his former team thanks to a not-so-stable ex-fiancée and Vlad’s serious, focused demeanor, you wouldn’t expect there would be anything about to happen.  But this is one of those subtle attractions that turn into something intense just…like…that.

Might be that dominant vibe that Vlad exudes all the time—in public or private.  Might be that willing submissive vibe that radiates from Tate when they’re alone.  Probably a bit of both ;-)

Everything about Tate and Vlad together works for me.  The person I was not a fan of at all?  Tate’s ex.  Regardless of the cause behind her behavior and actions, she irritated me to no end, and while I know it may be an unpopular opinion due to her issues I still would have preferred  for her to be publicly lambasted.  Yeah, that’s how annoyed I was with her.

It’s always good to get to see the rest of the couples from the series; we even get a cameo from our favorite Railer.  Arizona’s goalie, Colorado, keeps things quirky which of course just ups the intrigue for his own story.

Sugar and Ice is another great story in the series, and the dynamic between Tate and Vlad is perfect.  This book was a 4.5-star read for me, and is meant for readers 18+ for adult language (from humans and birds alike) and sexual content (just the humans there—it’s not THAT kind of story).

Is it easier to fall into the shadows than hold onto the light?

Injured in a horrific car accident by a man who made him feel like nothing, Henry was left with life threatening injuries, crippling self doubt, and his career as a hockey player destroyed. He’s struggling to see, and as much as people tell him to have hope because he’s young and fit, his vision is compromised and he’s spiraling into despair. Estranged from his family, and his money all gone, there seems to be no hope. Hockey gave him freedom, and now it’s all been taken away.

Adler insists on letting Henry stay in a vast Lockhart-owned mansion in Tuscon, but it's a big and lonely place. When Apollo arrives at the house with his sunny smile and infectious optimism, along with his no-nonsense rules, he slowly becomes an integral part of Henry’s life. But one day, when Henry is better, Apollo will leave, and what happens then? Has Henry really fallen for the dark eyed man, or is it all just smoke and mirrors?

If there is one thing that Apollo Vasquez knows all about it’s helping others and living with quirky athletes. After all, he’s spent most of his adult life tending to one of the richest hockey playing heirs in America. His days have been filled with friendship, laughter, and the knowledge that he’s needed. Or he used to be. Over the past year Apollo’s best friend, Adler Lockhart, has been slipping away, his time spent with his boyfriend, on the ice, or traveling the world with the man he loves. This leaves Apollo feeling like a clunky third wheel or all alone in a luxurious apartment with no one to fuss over.

Knowing that his life is at a crossroads, his loving nature leads him far away from his childhood friend to the dry desert town of Tucson where he signs on to care for Henry Greenaway as the young Raptor recovers both mentally and physically from a near fatal car crash. Henry is also facing a new life, one that might lead him from the sport he has loved for so long. Cooking, cleaning, and providing moral support is just what the doctor ordered for Apollo, and he soon finds himself not only rediscovering himself and a new life he adores, but falling for the sweet, lost, injured man who’s slowly capturing his heart one timid smile at a time.

Carra's Review

It’s always a pleasure to return to these authors’ hockey romances because I know I’m going to get a really good story, a touch of angst, and a satisfying happy ever after.  Once again here in Shadow and Light, this writing duo delivers with Henry and Apollo’s story.

From the moment of Henry’s accident prior in the series, I (along with many other readers) have been eagerly awaiting the moment he would be able to get his own HEA.  It was disheartening to see his outlook and motivation at the point it was when this story began.  Apollo though was the exact antidote needed to pick Henry up and give him a boost.

Even though Apollo’s own outlook is less than sunny (literally) back home on the east coast, taking care of others is what he’s made for, and it also perks him up as well.  He’s the perfect person to step in and help out, and his almost always “on” attitude does help crack through the walls Henry has up.

The two of them truly complement each other, they just needed a bit more communication going on about their feelings.  But that aside, this is a really good hurt/comfort read, and overall this story gets 4 stars from me…and of course I’m looking forward to book number four!  As with the rest of the series, this story is meant for readers 18+ for adult language and sexual content.
