Release Day Review: DETECTIVE FOX & THE CHRISTMAS CAPER by Isobel Starling

Detective Fox and the Christmas Caper
by Isobel Starling
Genre: M/M romantic comedy, holiday romance

Blurb

Every good Dick needs a sidekick…
Actor Tom Lewis’s world came crashing down when a honey trap and tabloid expose outed him and put pay to his flourishing career. The housewives favorite was most well-known for his role as ‘Detective Fox’ in the quaint British series 'Malmesbury Murders'. But after the media speculation about his sexuality, the show is in hiatus and Tom hasn’t worked six months.
Now things are getting serious, money running out and Tom needs a job desperately. So when his agent offers him a seasonal acting job, he reluctantly agrees… and takes on the role of Santa for a top London department store.
This decision changes Tom’s luck.  When Tom overhears two unidentified store workers discussing a "job to get a little Christmas bonus”. He realizes the 'job' is of the illegal sort. Now, Tom could call the police, but then again, wouldn’t it be great for his flagging career if Detective Fox saved the day?
So Fox is on the case, and as every good Dick needs a sidekick, Tom decides a sexy young elf named Eli Mason will fit the role, in more ways than one.”

Carra's Review

Funny, sweet and hot…and filled with it’s own funky brand of Christmas cheer—that’s my quickie thought about Detective Fox and the Christmas Caper.  It’s the perfect book to put you in the mood for the season while giving you a bit of a mystery, plenty of laughs and a blossoming relationship between Tom and Eli that is hot and sexy with a touch of kink.

To be honest, I thought much of the concentration of the story was on the mystery that Tom and Eli were trying to solve.  Their relationship and the kinky chemistry between them?  That was like a yummy bonus ;-)  Now, the fact that Tom and Eli were trying to solve this on their own instead of turning their information over to the authorities?  That was a bit of a stretch for me, as I can’t see any law enforcement professionals condoning something like that in any way—so for me, I exercised my suspension of disbelief on this aspect of the story.

As for the rest?  It’s a fun trek and a crazy ride—after all, Tom, Eli and their friends aren’t real detectives, and the whole Winterwoods thing at Hamblings is a grandiose bit of kookiness (and yet I can see a major department store chain doing something exactly like this…), but even with that, the good guys still win in the end.  And the extra perk of Tom and Eli’s developing relationship-kinks and all?  That I think has sealed the deal to make this a yearly holiday re-read for me.

4 stars for Detective Fox and the Christmas Caper, and this will be most appreciated by M/M holiday romance fans who like that extra bit of kink in their stories.  Recommended only for readers 18+ due to adult language and M/M sexual content.
