Sons of Olympus, Book 1

Wilder Pratt has given up trying to get his life together. Passed up for a promotion, left by his long-term boyfriend, nothing in his life seems to work how he planned. Wilder is just treading water . . . right up until the moment he trips over a dead student outside his office with a golden would-be murderer standing over the body.

Hermes has been running his whole life—from duty and danger, from a father who mistrusts him and siblings who outshine him. But when the students at Banneker College of magic start dropping dead one after another, Hermes’s ass is on the line. He finds himself playing bodyguard to a man who suspects him of murder, but that doesn’t seem enough to keep Professor Pratt’s hot hands off him.

An ancient evil has risen from the depths of Tartarus, and he’s coming for Banneker. The only thing standing in the way of a titanic apocalypse is one disappointing part-time professor and a god who’d rather abandon the world to its fate. But if they work together, they may just save everyone.

“Is . . . is he dead?” Wilder demanded, even though his breath was trying to freeze in his chest.

The man looked up at him. “What?” He glanced back down at the student and blinked like it was a surprise to find a corpse there. “Oh, you mean him. Wait, are you talking to me?” His eyes widened even more as he looked back up at Wilder, as if the body had been shock enough, but someone speaking to him was beyond comprehension.

Wilder glanced all around and back at the man, holding out his hands to indicate the empty hallway. “Who else would I be talking to?”

The guy gave a lazy shrug and grinned, far too casually to be keeping company with a dead body. “Dunno, you professorial types are always talking to yourselves, aren’t you? I think all those books make you funny in the head.”

“Maybe if you read a book or two, you would realize that ‘dunno’ isn’t a word,” Wilder pointed out. He didn’t have a problem with the slang, really, but he was surprised and bothered and feeling wrong-footed, and when he felt uncomfortable, he tended to ignore his therapist’s advice.

He hopped to his feet, grinning at Wilder like a man who belonged in a madhouse. “S’pose so, huh? Dunno what I’d do with all them fancy words, though. My head might explode if I filled it too full.”

Wilder opened his mouth and closed it once, and then twice. “Matthew,” he said, unintelligently.

“Huh?”

“His name is Matthew. I just remembered. One of his term papers is in my bag.”

The man looked once again down at the body between them, then gave Matthew a little nudge with his toe. Matthew didn’t rouse. “I guess you don’t gotta worry about grading that one.”

Even for Wilder, that was a little flippant. He looked at the man, expecting to find the same inappropriate grin in place, even as he joked about the death of a student. He was frowning, though, looking at the body like a puzzle, and one he wasn’t enjoying.

“Disappointed?” Wilder asked.

He looked up at Wilder and shook his head. “No. Just can’t figure it out. He’s the second one like this. Can’t see what killed him—he’s just gone.” He looked around the hallway. He seemed to think he’d find the young man standing somewhere else and no longer lying on the floor. Then he shook his head. “Gone.”

He was right. There was no sign of what had killed Matthew. He was just pale and cold, eyes staring sightlessly at the ceiling.

“Uncle H is gonna be pissed,” the guy muttered. “Nothing to be done now, though. I gotta get back to work. Later, Prof!”

“Hey! You can’t just leave. We need to call—” Wilder’s head snapped up to stare at the man, but he found himself alone in the hallway with his student’s corpse.

Carra's Review

This author duo has done it again.  Another excellent story with characters right out of Greek mythology, Wildfire brings Wilder, a mage with the power of fire, and Hermes, everyone’s favorite love-to-hate-him smart aleck messenger god, together as they fight against the Titans trying to come back into power.

You may not think things look promising for Wilder and Hermes in the romance department, but keep reading—the tempestuous beginning to their relationship eventually leads to something deeper, even as each of them wonder how they could ever have anything solid together.  They certainly do have plenty of physical chemistry…and though Hermes may wonder how he suddenly seems to have come to care for the humans at the Banneker school, he and Wilder do have that in common.

But there are baddies on the loose, and in addition to these new enemies you’ll find appearances of characters from the authors’ Lords of the Underworld series in supporting roles.  Oh, and brownies.  I’m finding myself craving brownies now.  You’ll see.

I loved immersing myself in this story; I’ve always been one to devour Greek mythology when going to school, once out of school, and now in books that are crafted around the myths.  This duo puts you right in the middle of the Greek gods and Titans, and impressively so considering all those mythological figures are part of the modern-day society in which the story is set.

Wildfire was a 5-star read for me, and I am excited for more in the series to see which gods will have their own stories told.  If you’re a mythology addict like me, this book and the series from which it spins off are a must-have for your personal library.  Note that the adult language and sexual content do make this story one for readers 18+.

Paws in the Snow

Exhausted from the waves of pain, Derick slowly packed up his backpack and tucked the bottle in the outer pocket. Zipping it up, he slung one strap over his shoulder and grabbed his coat. Carefully, he walked down the steps.

Though other students called out to him, he ignored them. Just not feeling strong enough to answer.

He leaned against the front row desks. Dropping his coat on one desk, he rubbed his fingers over his head and rubbed his neck.

Dark speckles filled his vision. Then the strange burning sensation returned to his eyes.

“Do you know what is happening to you, mon chaton?” Chevalier asked in his soft French-Canadian accent.

Lifting his head, Derick tried to blink through the speckle spots and burning. “Happening? Flu. Got flu.”

Chevalier shook his head. “Not the flu. Something special. Something that I don’t think you ever learned about, but now I can see it inside you. I can help you, but you must trust me. You will need to listen to me, follow me, and I’ll get you through what is happening.” He touched his fingers against Derick’s cheek. “Can you do that for me, mon chaton?”

“Will I feel better?”

“Oh, oui, better and stronger. That I can promise.”

His knees buckled when another wave of pain and cramps roared through his body. He groaned and collapsed.

“Oh, mon chaton, we’re running out of time,” Chevalier said when he caught him. He held Derick tight against his frame.

“Feel horrible… Help me, Professor—”

“Ben. Call me Ben.”

“Scared. Feel horrible.” Derick rested his head on Chevalier—Ben’s shoulder. He breathed in the soft fragrance of Ben’s cologne. Just the touch and smell of him comforted whatever happened deep inside him. “Don’t leave me.”

“Never, mon chaton.

Carra's Review (select stories)

Here's my review of several of the stories in the collection.  For the overall collection, I'd give it a 4-star rating.  Note this collection is meant for readers 18+ for adult language and sexual content.  Enjoy!

Count Down by JS Bright

Everything about Colin and Landyn was just right for me.  I liked that Colin wasn’t aware of what he was, while Landyn was the opposite.  The two of them just clicked together, with the expected physical chemistry.  My only “on the fence” portion was near the end of the story with Colin’s neighbor—I would have liked to have seen more background on who he was and the whole aspect of what he was doing.  I think though that the author could use this to eventually expand this story into a longer one down the road.  3.75*

The Last Kitsune by Melissa E Costa

Oh my goodness, I just LOVED this story.  It was so sweet, yet at the same time a bit sad, but in the end left me with a huge smile on my face.  I felt so sad for Kai as he was quite lonely, but as more details emerged during Shigeru’s stay and the whole truth came out, I reveled in what the two of them found together.  Through the writing I could feel the boundless joy they both experienced once Shigeru found his true form.  I would be thrilled if the author would choose to turn this into a full-length novel just to be able to spend more time with Kai and Shigeru.  5*

By the Moonlight by Megs Pritchard

Simply put, this was HOT.  I loved the fact that Jordy had been waiting for Stone since Stone was born. I loved how protective but not overbearing Jordy was with him.  I loved how much they craved each other, even though Stone didn’t understand why.  I just loved everything about this story.  And the intimate scenes are scorching hot—even with as short a time period as the story covers, the buildup of sexual tension between Jordy and Stone before they give in is intense.  I think you can tell I just loved this story in general ;-).  5*

Prey to the Fox by Jessie G.

Everything about this story screams classic shifter to me, and that’s one of the reasons why I loved it.  The combination of rabbit and fox when they are traditionally prey and predator, the ascension of an embattled runt of the litter to a loved and important member of the community, and the absolute love between Dario and Bastian…all of this made this story into something exceedingly enjoyable.  Besides, who wouldn’t love an adorable bunny and his just as beautiful fox mate?  5*

Finding His Groove by Sara York

I really liked the matchup of Avi and Win.  They are opposites in size which is always a great match, and once he figures out how to shift, Avi’s animal is simply magnificent—and in oh so many ways.  His family certainly underestimated him after he had gone so long without ever shifting, and I thought it was justice served when he finally came into his own.  4*

Paws in the Snow by Nicole Dennis

This is a lovely story about a young man who didn’t know he was a shifter being guided into his first shift.  The story concentrates on what he feels and how he reacts and adapts, though due to the short length of time covered readers will not get much further than that into Derick’s life.  Ben, his TA from one of his classes, is great as a mentor to help guide Derick and explain everything to him.  There’s no romance initiated during this story; however, if the author decides to expand this in the future to a full-length novel this would be a solid foundation upon which to build.  4*

Blurb

When Colorado Penn finds an unexpected package on his front step, his life will be changed forever.

Colorado Penn is living the dream. Starting goalie for the Arizona Raptors when in season, lead singer for a hard rock band when summer rolls around. He’s the quintessential free spirit who’s making sure he enjoys all the carnal blessings of his athleticism, and gritty singing voice. Now the Raptors are moving into their first playoff appearance in years, but the arrival of an unexpected package means that hockey may have to take a backseat to something way more important. Instead of the usual undergarments from adoring fans, he finds a newborn baby with a small note tucked under her carrier, naming him as the father. He refuses to give up his daughter and is determined to be the kind of father he’d dreamed of having. But to keep Madeline, he’ll need help, and he’ll need it fast. Enter handsome emergency manny, Joseph. They may be opposites, but Colorado starts to see that Joseph’s stable, calm influence makes his chaotic lifestyle choices seem less appealing. There’s something about the man that soothes not only his infant daughter but also the wild child inside Colorado.

Joseph is one year away from getting his degree in planetary science, working cover shifts at the planetarium, and pulling in income with short term manny gigs. Stars collide as he provides emergency childcare for the wild man of hockey, a man who moves so fast through life that he doesn’t know how to stop. Homeless, and caring for his niece, Emma, fate brings Joseph into Colorado and baby Madeline’s life. Madeline is a sweetheart, and Colorado is trying his hardest to make the best decision for his baby girl. He offers his home and an indecent salary, to keep Joseph in his life until summer’s end. Colorado brings mysticism and metal to Joseph’s sanctuary of science, but somehow Joseph needs to tame this shooting star and create a family. Nothing in the contract said Joseph had to fall in love to make that happen, but when it’s time for him to leave, will the void in his heart ever heal, or will it remain as cold as space itself?

New Release-Review: THE HOOKUP by Kindle Alexander

The Hookup
by Kindle Alexander

Genre: M/M Romance Novella
Release Date: October 12, 2020
Cover Design: Reese Dante Book Cover Art & Design

Meet me @ The Hookup?

A well-deserved celebration is in order for attorney Easton Elliott. Everything is going as planned until a tempting glimpse of the past sidebars the handsome attorney’s party.

An unexpected invitation has linguist Grant Holt excited about the spur-of-the-moment rendezvous. But words are futile when he arrives to find there’s been a mix up.

A text, a celebration, and a misunderstanding all lead to…The Hookup

Goodreads - “The Hookup is a very quick novella that was steamy and so hot that you will be in danger of being burnt”
SiKReviews - “A sweet book about a couple who spice up their marriage in a unique way”
Goodreads - “Kindle Alexander never lets you down when reading about the men in their stories.”

There’s nothing quite like a short, hot novella from one of my favorite authors with just a touch of angst to put a smile on my face.  This is a really quick read—like maybe a half hour to an hour—but it packed enough of a punch in that time to have me loving both Grant and Easton, and wanting to know so much more about them.

It’s hard not to say too much in my review considering the short length of this story.  What it all boils down to though is two guys looking for and finding a hot and sexy hookup, and what you learn of them at the beginning of the story is not all as it seems.  But that’s actually a great thing, which turns the story into one of my favorite tropes (no, I can’t tell you!  That would give it away!).

Just know that you can expect a great quick story from a tried-and-true author, and yes—you’ll eventually find out what is up with Grant’s pants.

5 stars for The Hookup, and oh yes it is absolutely for readers 18+ for adult language and steamy sexual content.

Best Selling Author Kindle Alexander is an innovative writer, and a genre-crosser who writes classic fantasy, romance, suspense, and erotica in both the male/male and male/female genres. It's always a surprise to see what's coming next!

I live in the suburbs of Dallas where it's true, the only thing bigger than an over active imagination, may be women's hair!

Usually, I try for funny. Humor is a major part of my life - I love to laugh, and it seems to be the thing I do in most situations - regardless of the situation, but jokes are a tricky deal... I don't want to offend anyone and jokes tend to offend. So instead I'm going to tell you about Kindle.

I tragically lost my sixteen year old daughter to a drunk driver. She had just been at home, it was early in the night and I heard the accident happen. I'll never forget that moment. The sirens were immediate and something inside me just knew. I left my house, drove straight to the accident on nothing more than instinct. I got to be there when my little girl died - weirdly, I consider that a true gift from above. She didn't have to be alone.

That time in my life was terrible. It's everything you think it would be times about a billion. I love that kid. I loved being her mother and I loved watching her grow into this incredibly beautiful person, both inside and out. She was such a gift to me. To have it all ripped away so suddenly broke me.

Her name was Kindle. Honest to goodness - it was her name and she died a few weeks before Amazon released their brand new Kindle ereader. She had no idea it was coming out and she would have finally gotten her name on something! Try finding a ruler with the name Kindle on it.. It never happened.

Through the course of that crippling event I was lucky enough to begin to write with a dear friend in the fan fiction world of Facebook. She got me through those dark days with her unwavering support and friendship. There wasn't a time she wasn't there for me. Sometimes together and sometimes by myself, we built a world where Kindle lives and stands for peace, love and harmony. It's its own kind of support group. I know without question I wouldn't be here today without her.

Synopsis

Ryder

It's a cliché really, falling in love with my best friend, my very straight best friend. And to add more complications, I'm a football player, about to be drafted. We're manly men. We aren't supposed to be gay. But I am and I love the one person I'll never have. Until fate forces us together six years later. It'll be both a fantasy and hell on earth, playing along Crush—the only man who will ever truly own my heart.

Crush

He dropped a bomb on me. Then he left, never looking back. Our friendship—ruined until he lands back in my life. His presence is just as big as ever. I never forgot him, or what that one kiss so many years ago still does to my body. He's here, but is he willing to stay?

Carra's Review

I’m always game for a good M/M sports romance (see what I did there?), and if both main characters are in the sport even better.  Here in My Only Reason we have football—one of my favorites—and Crush and Ryder are former best friends getting a second chance.  Well, if you count a single kiss as a first chance.

I did like the two of them together, even if Crush’s attitude is a bit more brash than what I normally warm up to.  With Ryder being out of the closet—in professional football no less—by the time he lands a spot on the same team as Crush, it does seem to take the pressure off of them, even though they do not go public with their relationship.  Things so go along very smoothly for them, the entire story is relatively angst-free with the only real bits of drama occurring when Crush’s ex-wife is around.

And speaking of that ex-wife…she is the clear antagonist here, and the author is spot on in her portrayal as a real she-devil…almost to the point of it being too much before things get reeled in.  The other supporting characters though, which consist of Crush and Ryder’s families and teammates, are all positive and supportive; my only nit-pick would be the speech of the little girls, which comes across as too young and choppy, even for as young as they are.

If you’re looking for a good M/M sports romance with not too much drama, My Only Reason will fit the bill.  It was a 3.5-star read for me, and I think most fans of the genre will enjoy this story.  This book is meant for readers 18+ for adult language and sexual content.
