Leo Byrne is a cop, Jason Banks is an ex-con. Even after one stolen kiss, something has to give before Leo can convince Jason that falling in love is even an option.

Adopted at a young age, Leo is part of the sprawling Byrnes family. With his dog Cap, three siblings and a whole mess of nieces and nephews, he is never lonely, and his life is full. Love is the last item on his to-do list, but seeing his best friends Sean and Eric happy and making new families makes him want things he doesn’t think is possible. Kissing Jason at an event to honor his bravery was one thing, but anything other than that is off limits. Until Jason has no one left to turn to, and it’s Leo who helps him at his lowest. Taking Jason and his daughter into his home is one thing, but falling for the ex-con is something else altogether.

Jason made a deal to keep his daughter safe and spent years behind bars as a result. Volunteering as a convict firefighter was as much about helping the community as saving his sanity, but now that he’s out, he doesn’t even have that. He’s lost his future, his self-respect, and has no friends or a place to call home. Worst of all, even after rescuing his daughter he still can’t keep her safe from the man who wants to use her as a bargaining chip for money. Meeting Leo might give Jason a way to keep Daisy safe, but falling for the stubborn cop means the truth has to be revealed, and he could lose everything all over again.

A raucous ripple of laughter rang out from the wooden gallery above us, where the more pricey whores kept lodging and conducted their business. Following the source of the commotion, I looked up.
Two men and a woman had just come out of a room on the mezzanine floor. Judging by the way the joke had them all in stitches, it must’ve been top-notch.
The highborn couple, dressed in layers of greys and silvers as the latest fashion dictated, stood in contrast with the shirtless and barefoot whore. He sported only a pair of low-slung, undone breeches, offering the world a generous glimpse of his hips and groin.
I couldn’t make out their words, but I recognised that the merry gathering held a conversation in Common Elven. It didn’t surprise me. For one, it had been the language of the nobles and courtiers since the Emperor had taken the throne thirty-odd years before.
Secondly, the whore was a half-breed Elf.
A closer glance at him and my mouth went dry.
My shaft hardened as I drank in the sight of him— his lean figure, luminous skin and angular eyes. The pointy tips of his ears poked through a cascade of red hair. Not copper, ginger or auburn. Not mahogany. But blood red. Intricate tattoos on the sides of his face announced his Incubus heritage. Obsolete Imperial law still called for the marking of Tii-Matâshi, even though their Magic had declined through the centuries, shrinking their power to a fraction of that possessed by their demonic forefathers.
The redhead’s companions waved their farewells and made for the stairs. He leant over the railing in a nonchalant pose, his sculptured arms folded on top of the barrier. There was a note of arrogance in the way he examined the crowd below and shamelessly displayed his ethereal beauty.
It took a moment, but eventually his gaze fell upon me. At first, he seemed to stare through me. Then he measured me up, blatant and hostile somehow, as though ascertaining my worth, leering at me in a downright insolent manner.
I couldn’t look away, turned-on and irate at the same time. Insane as it might have been, I felt the physical touch of fingers running over my body. The sensation set my flesh on fire.
Perhaps the stories told about the Tii-Matâshi held a grain of truth.
Next thing I knew, his mouth set into a condescending smirk. He averted his eyes and pivoted on his heel. Before he disappeared, I observed his lush hair swish to the side and cover his shoulders and back like a fiery silk cloak.
The slam of his door felt very much like a slap to my face. I flinched.

Carra's Review

Kasia Bacon has just shown that not only can she completely dominate with short story and novella length fantasy romance, but she can also deliver a full length version that just as amazing as well.  Ever since I first picked up The Mutt a few years ago, I have been continually impressed at her ability to pack so much story into a shorter format, so I was thrilled to find out that When I First Saw Red was going to be a full short novel.  That it is one with soulmates makes it all the better!

Lázhien and Red are definitely opposites in size, personality, and attitude.  You know from the moment they spot each other that Red’s dismissive reaction even as their obvious attraction sizzles between them will lead to a bumpy ride.  I love that the story is told from both Lázhien’s and Red’s points of view, and that we can see how conflicted Red is from that insight.

Red did frustrate me a bit with his determination not to give in to the connection that is so evidently growing between them.  That is something that frustrates me in any genre, and when it’s a character who you can see really wants what fate is bestowing upon them I just want to plead with them to let it happen. I felt that even more so here, since not only can you see it would make him happy, but it would content the demon inside him as well.

I loved this longer glimpse into a new couple based in The Order Universe here in When I First Saw Red, and thoroughly enjoyed this 5-star read.  And as if that’s not enough, there was even a glimpse into the author’s next book in this universe to get me excited for more of my favorite couple ;-)  If you are a fantasy romance fan and haven’t started reading this author’s works, you’re missing out on some of the best writing in the genre.  This particular book can be read as a standalone (but you know I’m going to recommend checking out her other ones first!), and is meant for readers 18+…because Lázhien and Red definitely get hot and steamy!

Felix Humphries can’t even remember the first time he crushed on Star Shadow’s drummer, Max McCloud.

It’s been an embarrassingly long time, but he’s still never acted on his feelings. One, because Max is his older brother’s best friend. Two, because Max is also his friend. Three, Max is technically his boss. And four, worst of all, Max is straight.

But when Max unexpectedly needs a caretaker for a few weeks, Felix can’t leave his friend in the lurch. He’s all ready to suffer through being so close but not close enough, when the unexpected happens.

Max isn’t straight after all, and what Max wants is Felix—but only in his bed, not in his heart.

Hazardous Things is the third book in the Star Shadow series and should not be read as a standalone.

Excerpt

When Felix came back into Max’s room, the nurse in tow, Max was still awake. He was staring out the window, a harmless drugged smile on his face.
“He’s gonna sleep for a while,” the nurse said, “at least when you get him back home.”
“I’m assuming he’s better off sleeping than being coherent and in pain,” Felix said quietly.
“Oh yeah,” the nurse said. “There’s prescriptions for the pain. And it’ll be significant. Make sure he takes them. If he doesn’t, it’s going to be real uncomfortable for both of you.”
“That won’t be a problem. I’m staying with him,” Felix said. After all, once he committed to something, he committed to it.
“I see you’re awake again,” the nurse said, going over to Max’s side. “How you feel about taking off?”
“Home,” Max repeated firmly.
“That’s right,” the nurse said, and after donning a pair of gloves, began to work on getting the IV out of Max’s arm.
Felix wasn’t exactly squeamish—he’d better not be, anyway, considering that the nurse had already gone over Max’s care instructions and he would definitely be the one changing the surgical dressing and making sure it stayed clean—but it was hard to watch when it was Max. When it was someone he cared about as much as he did Max.
Especially when Felix saw Max flinch.
“Hey,” Felix said, reaching for Max’s other hand and tangling those long, calloused fingers with his own. There’d been a point when he’d have cut off his other hand just to hold hands with the man in front of him, but he couldn’t think about that now. Now, he needed to distract Max from the IV being removed.
“Heeeeey,” Max said, and that was definitely not what Felix had expected. Was that . . .a leer?
“Hi yourself,” Felix said, squeezing Max’s hand.
Max raised their joined hands and brushed them against Felix’s forehead. “Pretty,” he said. “So pretty.”
Felix ordered himself not to blush, but it was useless. He glanced up, and the nurse was looking at them. “Your brother, huh?” she asked, amusement in her voice.
He squirmed. “My brother’s best friend,” he finally confessed. He’d been worried that they wouldn’t let him stay in the waiting room during the surgery or wouldn’t let him in to see Max in recovery if he wasn’t a family member, so he’d fudged the truth a little.
“Ah, that kind of brother,” the nurse said, her voice knowing.
Even though Felix wanted to explain it couldn’t ever be like that, because Max wouldn’t ever be interested in him that way, he didn’t, because it was already humiliating enough that his crush was visible from space.
When this ordeal was over, the only person on earth who didn’t know was going to be Max himself—and Felix would do just about anything to keep it that way.
“I’m just about done here,” she continued. “Just keep him distracted for a moment longer.”
Max’s hazel eyes were speckled with green in this light, unfocused and utterly focused on Felix all at the same time.
“Hey, it’s gonna be alright,” Felix said, his voice so much more tender than he’d intended. If he looked up, he might see quiet amusement on the nurse’s face, but he didn’t look, because he was finding it tough to look away from Max.
“Alright?” Max repeated, but he didn’t sound certain. At least not certain enough for Felix’s peace of mind. Even if this was hard—even if it felt impossible—to be there for Max over the next few weeks, he knew deep down in his bones that it was the right thing to do. Max was alone and understandably, justifiably scared—and even if there was never anything more than friendship between them, Felix wanted to be the one who reassured him.
“It’s going to be more than alright,” Felix promised. Promised himself that he would do whatever it took to make this vow come true.

Carra's Review

Just to reiterate one point from the synopsis—you will want to make sure you’ve at least read the first book in this series before starting Hazardous Things otherwise you might find yourself a bit lost with who all of the characters are and the backstory that has brought them all to this point.  While this book is primarily focused on Max and Felix, there will be some things that come up with Leo and Caleb that won’t be as meaningful (and worrisome) if you don’t know their story as well.

Felix is absolutely a caretaker type, so when you combine that with the unrequited feelings he has had for Max for years it provides an obvious setup to launch their story.  Max…he’s definitely oblivious to those feelings Felix has been harboring, at least until one particular incident triggers the start of something physical between them.

Things progress much as you would expect, and though they agree they need to communicate with their arrangement the true communication—you know, about those pesky feelings— that they both sorely need is frustratingly absent.  Add in the requisite minor misunderstanding (that to me felt more like just a convenient excuse, something that Felix could deliberately take advantage of to try and protect himself)…and you have a moderately angsty rockstar romance.

Felix and Max do belong together, that’s obvious to everyone—me included, I just get irritated when characters aren’t communicating they way they should.  Since the whole communication breakdown and angst level are really a me-thing, my 4-star rating is based primarily on the writing and love of the individual characters. Fans of the series and anyone who likes rockstar romances will absolutely enjoy this third entry in the Star Shadow series.  Keep in mind that with the adult language and sexual content, this book is meant for readers 18+.

Fast cars. Outlaw country boys. Snarky werewolves, vengeful ghosts, and menacing monsters.

Dawson King’s family has been hunting things that go bump in the night in Transylvania County, North Carolina, since before the Revolutionary War.

Dawson was never happier than when he was racing his souped-up Mustang along winding mountain roads and hunting monsters with his best friend, Grady. Then Grady fell in love with him, which should have been perfect since Dawson had already fallen hard for Grady.

But Grady was only seventeen, and Dawson feared that sooner or later, Grady would realize his feelings were just a first crush, and then he’d be gone, leaving Dawson devastated. They both needed space to figure things out. So Dawson joined the army, while Grady stayed on the mountain.

Four years later, Dawson is coming home. He’s more sure than ever Grady is his forever love, and they’ve both agreed to begin this new aspect of their relationship as soon as Dawson gets back.

Then Grady’s father is killed in a werewolf hunt gone wrong. Grady is devastated, and he’s throwing mixed signals about moving forward. Dawson knows he needs to hold off on this new thing between them until Grady has time to grieve. But monsters never sleep, and one hunt after another throws Dawson and Grady into constant danger, while tension and unresolved feelings ripple between them.

Making it even harder, Dawson’s got a secret. He’s dreamed of death omens—which point to something stalking Grady. Can Dawson figure out who’s trying to kill Grady, save his life, and win back his heart?

Plenty of mutual pining, hurt/comfort, spooky chills, sexy thrills, and a very happy ending. The Kings of the Mountain is the first novel in the series. It is a MM romance intended for readers 18 years of age and older.

Excerpt

Chapter One

The longer they spent time on the road and on hunts together, the more Dawson felt a powerful attraction to Grady. He’d always been fond of the younger man, but Dawson found himself admiring the person Grady was growing into. Grady deserved to find the right guy—if that’s what he wanted—who could make him happy. And as much as Dawson wished fervently that could be him, he knew he couldn’t take the chance that Grady might feel pressured or obligated to respond if Dawson made any advances.

Not to mention how Grady’s mother had always carried on about how awful it was to marry a “cousin,” something that she claimed no one in her family had ever done. She’d made her position loud and clear while she was married to Aaron, which had not endeared her to the rest of the community. Such marriages were legal in North Carolina, and not uncommon in the rural areas.

The fact that Grady wasn’t a cousin by blood probably wouldn’t matter to Camille. But what if Grady had accepted his mother’s bias? Maybe Dawson had imagined the flirtation, or worse, projected his own feelings onto the other man. So Dawson took the edge off with hookups and out-of-town one-night stands, very aware that he tended to choose partners with a resemblance to Grady.

Until he couldn’t stand it any longer.

That’s when Dawson enlisted.

Once they were on the main highway, Dawson turned to watch Colt’s profile.

“So…what happened with Uncle Denny and Grady?”

Colt’s grip on the steering wheel tightened, and the tic in his jaw told Dawson that the other man didn’t want to have this conversation. “They’re both alive. But a hunt went wrong a week ago, and Grady isn’t dealing with it very well.”

A week, Dawson thought. That was when he’d stopped getting emails from Grady. He had tried to convince himself the silence was due to any number of impersonal reasons, but Dawson knew in his gut something wasn’t right. His responses from Uncle Denny had gotten short and less frequent around the same time.

Was this what his nightmare had been warning him about?

“Could you be a little clearer?” Dawson knew Colt could read the warning in his tone.

“Grady got hurt. Aaron was killed. Grady’s not dealing well with it. Uncle Denny didn’t want to leave Grady alone. So they sent me.”

Dawson’s head swam. Uncle Aaron, dead? That’s hard to even imagine. He was always so full of life. And Grady—it’s got to be bad if he couldn’t come. Oh, God. I almost lost him. Plus there’s something Colt isn’t saying, something even worse. Because if Uncle Aaron died on a hunt, then Grady had to have been right there when it happened. That’s bad, really bad. No one should see their parent die, especially not like that.

Synopsis
It's a race against time as Andrei and Jander head deep into the volcanic warrens of their country's inner mountains to stop Kirin from completing the dark magic spell that will awaken the power of the dragons. There they find new allies in unlikely places, but also face betrayal in unanticipated forms. Can Jander overcome his fear of the power he still does not entirely understand in order to save himself and the master he has grown to love?

Excerpt
“Light,” Jander said softly. The wytchlight appeared in front of him at once, making him squint against the suddenness of it.
Boaen’s and Tanith’s eyes stared back at him, looking wide and shocked in the harsh glare of the wytchlight’s glow. They were all breathing hard. The sound of it echoed strangely in the confines of the tunnel around them.
“Andrei?” Boaen asked, looking haunted.
Jander lowered his gaze, fighting to hold his ground against the wave of fear and guilt that crashed through him. He felt along the training bond he shared with his master and closed his eyes briefly. “He’s alive,” he said, hearing the poignant relief he felt echoed in the words. Even so, their import filled him with a biting chill. “The Drakkarim have taken him prisoner.”
The look in Tanith’s eyes was dismayed. “They were waiting for us,” she said, her voice shaking with what sounded like equal parts panic and anger. “They knew we were coming.”
That thought had occurred to Jander as well. “Nierin.” He cursed himself for ever trusting the man. “It had to be him. No one else knew that we were coming here.”
“So what do we do now?” Boaen sounded lost. It was enough to remind Jander that his friend truly wasn’t cut out for this kind of adventuring lifestyle. It was his loyalty to Jander that had led him here. Jander wrestled for a moment with an immobilizing surge of regret over that realization, coupled with a renewed swell of guilt over the awareness that he had left Andrei behind.
This was ridiculous. Panicking wasn’t going to get them anywhere. Taking a deep breath to get himself under control, Jander shakily reached out into the magic to try to make some sense of the path that lay ahead of them.
“We’re going to find the dragon eggs,” he said in reply, reminding them all of the reason that they had come to this mountain to begin with. “And we’re going to stop Kirin from using them to give himself the powers of a dragon mage.” Master or no master, Jander was still a mage. He had sworn an oath to serve both his king and the magic, and to do what he could to protect his kingdom from harm. That thought calmed him, gave him focus, even as his heart ached with the desire to try to rescue Andrei—despite the fact that it would be an impossible task given the number of soldiers currently searching for them.
“Us?” Tanith sounded incredulous. Jander wasn’t sure he liked the skepticism he heard in her tone, although he supposed he couldn’t really blame her for doubting him. He was only an apprentice, after all.
“Yes, us.” He gave her what he hoped was an encouraging smile. “It’s what we came here to do. After we’ve found the eggs, then we can go after Andrei and rescue him.”
She nodded in response, yielding to his leadership. “You’re right,” she said. She sounded frightened, but resolute. She seemed to feel better with a tangible plan of action in front of them.
The look in Boaen’s eyes said he understood perfectly well how difficult it had been for Jander to focus on their mission, instead of chasing after Andrei. “Do we have any idea where we’re going?” he asked. “Are we even sure that the eggs are here?”
It was a good question. Closing his eyes, Jander reached out into the magic. This entire mountain was a maelstrom of magic, the primal forces of earth and fire clashing violently somewhere far beneath their feet at the volcano’s heart. The feel of it made his stomach tighten, but through the violence of it he could sense an elusive thread of magic, a sharp, almost metallic presence that twined through the air around them. The more he concentrated, the stronger the feeling grew, until he was almost certain he could feel the distant murmur of unformed dragon minds forging their connection with the source of the magic that sustained them.
“They’re here,” he said finally. “I can feel them.” It couldn’t be anything else other than the stolen dragon eggs. Their presence would be undetectable anywhere else in the world, but this close to the center of the mountain, he was able to pick out their aura from within the furor of the volcano’s fury, like a single high-pitched note singing out among an overwhelming symphony. “They’re close. I’m pretty sure I can lead us to them.”
“What about the dragon?” Tanith asked.
Jander frowned at the question. The dragon’s presence in the magic was still strong around them, pulsing with a menacing heat against his skin. Because of the turbulence in the magic that was a result of being so close to the center of the volcano, it was difficult for him to pinpoint its location precisely. The awareness of that chaotic maelstrom made the hairs stand up along the back of his neck.
“The dragon’s here, too,” he said. “I’m not sure exactly where. It’s an old one.” He wrapped his arms around his chest and let his breath out in a shuddering sigh. “I’m hoping we’ll be able to avoid it while we look for the eggs.”
The expression on Boaen’s face clearly said what he thought the chances were of that happening.
