A college dropout and a guitar hero get lucky in their very own St. Patrick’s Day love song…

Hugo Spencer never thought he’d be running his family toy factory and living above a garage at this stage in his college career. Then again, he never thought he’d walk in on his girlfriend cheating on him with some hot new stud—and like it! (Well, the hot new stud part, anyway!) Ever since seeing another man in action, Hugo has been rediscovering long-buried clues that he might not be so straight after all. And when he meets the sexy punk rocker who practices with his band in the garage below his new loft, Hugo can’t help but indulge in his newfound attraction to his very own guitar hero!

Rome Hazard is happy that his gran has finally rented out the loft apartment above the garage where he and his band, Headless Chickens, practice whenever the mood strikes. He’s even happier when he meets the new renter, Hugo, a slim, sexy straight dude who nonetheless makes his heart race faster than a blistering guitar solo! After helping Hugo move in one hot summer day, the two form an instant bond that soon turns into something much more than a mere favor. Can their budding bromance survive their small-town Georgia confines, or will it outgrow even their own pounding hearts?

Rome nodded, realizing they’d somehow inched close enough to touch. “Hmm,” he murmured, suddenly admiring the soft, buttery brown hair atop Hugo’s sweet, pretty head. “I’d settle for something small.”

“Yeah?” Hugo’s voice was a soft, low croak. “Like what?”

“Like running my fingers through your hair, for starters.”

“Oh.” Hugo froze, narrow hip casually leaned against the same counter where Rome stood. “Oh. Wow. That… f*ck, Rome, that… would be…”

“Hot?” Rome murmured, hand trembling as he gently reached out to do just that. “Yeah, Hugo, I think so.”

Hugo nodded and stood, perfectly still, waiting for the mere millisecond or two it took for Rome’s hand to reach his head. His fingertips gently brushed the feathery wisps of Hugo’s hair, soft and fluttering beneath his light touch. Rome could hardly believe this was happening. Here, now, in the middle of the day, without so much as a buzz to spur him along. Instead, he was flying on mere instinct, the thirst and hunger Hugo had talked about burning hot and hard deep within him.

Hugo let out a soft, almost primal moan, his eyelids fluttering as Rome’s fingers slid deeper into his medium-length curls. The feeling was slow, exotic, downright erotic, so new and unexpected after the way Hugo’s homecoming had started less than an hour before.

Rome thought Hugo might lean into the caress, turn it into something inevitably more, but instead, he sagged gently beneath it, as if on sensory overload. Rome knew the feeling, finding it hard to stand himself. Despite his instincts to grab a lock of hair and drag Hugo in for a long, deep kiss, he went the opposite direction, fingertips just gently glancing across his scalp before he pulled his shaky hand away.

“Your turn,” Rome croaked as Hugo quietly opened his half-lidded eyes.

“Mmm, yes please.” Hugo nodded toward the chair beside him. “But you’re too tall, you’ll have to sit for me to rub that pretty stubble of yours.”

“Your wish,” Rome sighed, not just sinking but downright oozing into the chair at his feet.

Hugo stood behind him, gripping the back of his chair as Rome squirmed into place. Warm breath spilled across the top of his head, moments before trembling fingers crept across his crown. Rome gripped the armrests tightly, unprepared for the magnitude of Hugo’s warm, gentle touch and how it might ricochet through every cell of his suddenly squirming body.

“So stubbly,” Hugo narrated, palming Rome’s dome with a warm, doughy hand as his fingers stretched out like spider legs. “Is the rest of you… like this?” Hugo asked, smoothing his hand around Rome’s scalp as if tracing every trace of stubble.

Rome’s voice was pure honey, to match the syrupy sensation as he practically oozed down into his chair. “You’ll just have to find out some time, I suppose.”

“How about now?” Hugo murmured, teasing his hand away as he turned and sank, gently, onto the butcher block in front of Rome.

Rome wasn’t entirely opposed to the idea. After all, the whole running his fingers through Hugo’s hair thing had been mere foreplay in the first place, no matter how divine it felt at the time. Still, he was used to playing a little harder to get. “What, right now?”

Hugo nodded, eyes wide and alive and richly hazel in the warm light bathing the small kitchenette. “We don’t have to do anything,” he lied, through his teeth. Or, at least, Rome hoped he was lying. “I just want to see what you look like… down there.”

And oh f*ck I'm gonna hate myself for this, but it takes all my willpower to roll off of him again and keep my hands to myself, rubbing them in my face. I can't. I f*cking can't. I won't f*ck this up.

“What’s wrong?” Ty asks, now the one who is popped up on his elbow, hand on my stomach.

I peek between my fingers,

“I wasn’t expecting you,” I admit.

"I know." He smiles down at me, fingers now trailing curiously over my upper body, his eyes following his own movements with interest, leaving a trail of goosebumps in its wake. "You were supposed to be an error, but I'm thinking that maybe you're an upgrade."

And oh f*ck, if I don't melt into the mattress, smiling dopily up at him, I'm sure I look like a stoner.

But he kisses me anyway. He’s kissing me again, and I push a hand in his hair, moaning at the touch of his lips.

He leaves it at that, not deepening it further, and I hold his head just that fraction longer, nudging his nose with mine, which rewards me with that soft gasp again.

"So, talk some more, right?" He rasps.

I nod. “Yeah. Should be wise, right?”

“So hit me.”

I inhale a breath to center myself and do as he says. “Do you really want me?”

“Yes.” No hesitation. “Do you want me?”

“For quite some time now, yeah.” I admit, cheeks burning. “Are you not confused about anything?”

He shakes his head. "Not anymore. Last week? A bit. But now?" He gives me a nose nudge this time before he nuzzles his face in my neck. "Yeah, pretty damn sure."

I can only smile at the ceiling, but I have to ask the most important question before this can go any further. "I'm not– I mean I want to know if I– F*ck."

I avert my gaze, but he lifts his head again and makes me face him, his hand now on my throat, making me drown in those molten eyes. "Ask me."

So I let it out, that one stupid thing that's on repeat in my brain. "I need to know if it's foolish to hope."

He furrows his dark brows. “To hope for what?”

“To hope for you.”

He almost looks crushed at that, but that damn determination creeps back in almost instantly. “It’s not. At least I hope it’s not.”

A tired rock star and a judgemental gardener…what could possibly go wrong?

Blurb

The Purple Lizards are a rock world phenomenon, but lead singer Martin’s tired of his rock-and-roll persona. He’d rather be at home with his garden. When he gets home from tour he finds his gardener has had a heart attack and Simon, his grandson, is helping him out. Simon’s different to Fred. He talks, for a start. Martin and Fred have a perfectly functional friendship based on long silences and discussions about heritage vegetables. Simon talks about personal things as well. It makes Martin prickly.
Simon’s at a bit of a loss. He stepped up to help his grandfather whilst he was in hospital despite his misgivings about the absent Martin. But Fred clearly likes him, which is unusual for a start. Fred prefers plants to people. That he actively likes a rock star who used to smash up hotel rooms is really strange. Simon’s reserving judgement. Apparently the band have a break in their tour coming up. He’ll see whether he can work for the man once he’s spent some time with him.
A tired rock star and a judgemental gardener…what could possibly go wrong?

Excerpt

Chapter Three

It was a huge relief to finally be home, Martin thought, as he made his way back up to the house. He’d dumped his bags in the hall and gone straight out to find Fred for a dose of reality and to get some dirt on his fingers. Instead he’d found Simon and scared himself stupid for a moment, thinking something had happened to his old friend. He understood the impulse not to bother him whilst he was on tour…but it wasn’t as if a heart attack was a minor issue.

He stepped over his bags and went to put the kettle on and peer into the fridge. Simon had told him that Moira had furnished him with a shopping list and instructions in her absence. He seemed a really nice kid. Although…he wasn’t a kid, he must be as old as or older than Pete Heggarty, in his late twenties. Only ten or twelve years younger than Martin. And just as knowledgeable about plants and vegetables as Fred.

Kind, as well. He’d seen he’d given Martin a shock and done his best to cushion it after the fact. He’d been calm and competent and given Martin the space he’d needed to get himself together again. Martin appreciated that. He seemed to spend all his time this tour being the person who sorted things out and looked after other people. It had been nice to have someone else do that for him, however briefly.

Part of the shock had been finding out about Fred. But part of it had been a weird sort of paralysis as he took in the man standing before him. A bit taller than Martin with mousy-blonde hair, Simon had the most piercing, indigo-coloured eyes Martin had ever seen.

He wasn’t a believer in being struck dumb by desire…it was a ridiculous concept. But for a moment there…he’d almost believed it could happen. Simon’s eyes… And he was fit in the way someone who did manual work was fit. No gym-rat body, just all over tone from what Martin had seen through his T-shirt and jeans.

Martin didn’t bother fancying people. When he wanted sex, he went out to one of a few discreet clubs he was a member of and got what he needed from someone he trusted to give it to him with no strings attached. Outside of that…he switched it off. His wiring wasn’t exactly straightforward, he knew. Outside the bedroom, he was a perfectly normal bloke. But inside, once the door closed, the temptation to give up control to his partner was always there. Given his choice of career…casual encounters were risky. It wasn’t that he never had them. But increasingly it felt like there was a disconnect between his sex life and who he was the rest of the time.

The last time he’d dated seriously had been more than a decade ago and although it hadn’t been a disaster, it had petered out into nothing with them both wanting different things in and out of bed. A couple of casual encounters where he’d felt too vulnerable and as if he was giving too much of himself away and he’d started seriously compartmentalising.

And so there he was in the greenhouse, startled into silence by his new employee’s indigo eyes and a conversation about heritage aubergines. He laughed at himself as he got out the makings of a ham sandwich. He should go and see Fred after he had something to eat. Simon had said he was champing at the bit with frustration, wanting to come back to work. Far too soon, the doctors—and Moira, who was the one who really counted—had said. But perhaps one of them could drive him up and he could sit down and supervise—code for boss about—Simon and Martin as they got to grips with whatever needed to be done.

Martin didn’t think Simon needed much supervision, to be honest. He didn’t either these days. He liked working with Fred. They’d fallen into a kind of silent harmony over the years. Martin told him a bit about the weird sh*t that happened on tour—he’d been looking forward to sharing the saga of Ken’s attempted blackmail and how it had backfired on him so badly. And telling him about how he’d found out Pete Heggarty slept with his violin.

He didn’t know whether he’d want to chat with Simon like that…but having another person around who was interested in the garden and the project itself was intriguing.

He hadn’t felt intrigued with anything for quite a while.

Sparks fly when Calixto meets his rock god idol, Sir Prince. But will it lead to true love?

To say I have a crush on Sir Prince is an understatement. The legendary rock star was responsible for my sexual awakening, and my heart has been devoted to him ever since. But I’m not just smitten with him during his heyday over twenty years ago. The older man has aged like a fine wine that I’m dying to swallow.

I take my obsession to the next level by playing Sir in a Four Princes tribute band. Imagine my shock when Sir shows up in my dressing room after my latest performance! Maybe it’s my imagination running away with me, but it kind of feels like we’re flirting? Or is that just his intense sexual pheromones overwhelming my fanboy heart?

I thought that would be the end of things, but then he invites me to dinner to “get to know me better.” Fingers crossed that’s code for taking me to his bedroom to indulge his sexual curiosity.

It’s foolish to get my hopes up, but what if Sir falls in love with me?

Excerpt

Chapter 1: Sir Prince

To my shock, my brother was right. Nobody noticed me and Mister standing in the back of the crowded club while waiting for the Faux Princes’ show to begin. It stunned me how packed the area was. Were people so hard up for good music that they were willing to listen to some hack tribute band pretending to be the Four Princes?

Mister elbowed me to get my attention and nodded his head toward the front. The band took the stage to raucous cheering. He was right. The lead singer had a startling likeness to me, so much so that it almost gave me an out-of-body experience. It was like looking into a mirror of my reflection from twenty years ago.

Lix was all swagger and sex as he approached the mic stand. He had a thin and willowy build that was emphasized by the black leather pants he was spray-painted into and the see-through mesh shirt that showed off his bronze skin. Did I see a glint of metal nipple rings? We were too far back to be sure.

His dark hair fell around his face in angelic curls, but his blue eyes were full of devilish delight as he put on his guitar strap. It gave me a newfound appreciation for why my amazing voice and handsome good looks had helped launch the Four Princes into the rock gods’ stratosphere.

“I love you, Lix!” a woman shouted in the audience, setting off a chain of catcalls.

His grin was beautiful as he laughed. “I love me, too!”

The crowd burst into laughter and more wolf whistling. I had to hand it to the kid. His retort sounded like some bullsh*t I would have said. But why would someone as young as him know about our band, let alone care about it enough to impersonate me in a tribute band?

“I’m Lix, and we’re the Faux Princes! How are we doing tonight, Sunnyside?” His question set off a thunderous cheer from the audience. “You already know I’m Lix, aka the world’s best singer, Sir. Kinsey is the one and only Mister. Aurelius is the fabulous Royal. And Evander is everyone’s favorite Lord. Let’s start with ‘Breaking Out.’ Some of you might know this one.”

Everyone laughed and cheered before settling down as the band played one of our most famous songs. Despite my brother talking up Lix’s voice, nothing prepared me for what I heard as he sang our triumphant rock ballad.

His big and beautiful voice grabbed me by the balls, demanding my attention. Its richness filled the empty cracks within me while the teasing vocal runs raised chills on my skin. It sent me on a wild journey, and I got lost in the immensity of it, which was too big for the tiny club to contain. Lix had an enormous voice that demanded the open space of a large amphitheater arena, with an adoring crowd of thousands screaming his name the way they did for me in the band’s heyday.

I probably had unlocked a new narcissism achievement, but him looking like me at twenty made the experience even more enjoyable. He exuded a commanding confidence that captivated me, smoldering with a sexiness that stirred my lust in a way a man hadn’t done in a very long time. It gave me a better appreciation for why I had an adoring legion of fans who would happily fall to their knees and worship me until I came.

Chapter 1: Sal Henrik

If I didn’t get some sleep soon, I was going to burn the world down. Staggering into my apartment at four in the morning after a thirty-seven-hour flight from hell, I dropped all my sh*t in the living room and headed straight to my pitch-black bedroom.

There wasn’t any point in turning on a light when I was three seconds away from crashing in my bed I had dearly missed while being on the road for our international tour.

I stripped on the way before crawling under the sheets. Exhaling a heavy sigh as I closed my eyes, I melted into a boneless puddle, more than ready for sleep to claim me for the night.

“Is there some reason you’re in my bed?”

My eyes flew open as I startled back with a noise of shock from the sound of a man’s voice that did not belong to my roommate. In the darkness, I could see the faint outline of a person next to me I had somehow missed earlier. My heart jumped into my throat as I fumbled for the lamp on my nightstand. In true me-fashion, all I did was knock the stupid thing onto the floor and break it.

The stranger sat up with a sigh and turned on the other bedside table lamp. I squinted against the sudden brightness. My mind reeled at the sight of a gorgeous god of a man in my bed.

Whereas my reaction was one of fear, he didn’t seem the least bit unsettled, which was amazing, considering I’d woken him up. He ran his fingers through the black hair that framed his face, looking freshly tousled by a good f*ck that gave me dirty thoughts. The sheets dipped low, making me realize we were both naked. That really didn’t help me think thoughts that weren’t about f*cking.

The man appeared to be older than me by quite a few years. His flinty gray eyes watched me with an intensity that made my heart pound. His handsome face had an annoyed frown on it as he studied me with disdain. “Again, I’ll ask: is there some reason you’re in my bed?”

My fear morphed into rage. “Your bed? What are you talking about? The better question is, what the hell are you doing in my bed?”

I may have been deeply flustered by the appearance of the naked stranger, but he was almost infuriatingly cool, calm, and collected. “I refuse to argue semantics with you at this ridiculous hour. Remove yourself from my presence at once.”

What kind of asshole used the word “semantics” at four in the morning? His authoritative tone rankled me. Who did this guy think he was? A prince who could order me around as if I was a peon?

My stubborn streak asserted itself. “I’m not going anywhere! If anything, I should call the cops and have you arrested for breaking and entering!”

“I have done no such thing.” He narrowed his eyes in a warning glare that made my heart skip a beat for all the wrong reasons. Damn him for being so attractive! “You seem to suffer from the delusion that I’m a trespasser when you’re the one who broke into my room.”

My temper flared as I raised my voice. I did not need that type of bullsh*t before 5:00 a.m. after a hard day of travel on the heels of a long world tour. All I wanted to do was sink into dreams. “Because I live here!”

Carra's Review

I love this author’s Wonderland series, so I thought I’d try one of their contemporary romances.  I’m really on the fence about this one.  On the one hand, the plot point used to bring Sal and Haverford together was a bit of a stretch for me, particularly once we learn more about Haverford’s personal situation much later in the story.  On the other, I did enjoy most of the interactions between the two of them, and they had great chemistry together.

For the most part, Sal’s negative reactions to Haverford sticking to his resolve to stay in his room were understandable; but they did start to grate on me since it did feel a bit over the top the longer it went on, especially once Sal seemed more or less resigned to the situation.

I will say though that I want my own Haverford to keep for myself.  While the way he spoke felt somewhat formal most of the time, he was calm, patient, smart…and boy that man sure can cook ;-). He definitely complemented Sal’s personality, making them a great match.

The story did feel to me a bit stretched out given how easily things seemed to resolve, but I did really like Sal and Haverford together once they did clear up their issues.  Me personally, I’ll probably be sticking to this author’s Wonderland series rather than their contemporary as I prefer the storytelling style in those books.  But if you’re a fan of music star romances, you’ll likely want to check Music to His Ears out.

Excerpt

Tobia approached the house cautiously. He smelled vampires all over the street and side yard. There were at least four different scents mingled. His heart pounded in his chest. How could he have left Gwin and Matthew alone? How could he have not known so many others were in the area? They must have come from the south side, up I-75 from the airport—downwind. He’d been further north and to the east on his hunt. He’d never sensed anything wrong until he was nearly home.

He circled around to the front of the house where he could see the lights on inside through the bay window. The garage took up the west side of the house and temporarily blocked his view of the door as he moved. When he came around to the front again, the porch light was still on, but now he could clearly see the front door on the ground, nearly half of it inside the house. It looked as if it had been knocked off its hinges. The doorframe had been left in splinters. He stepped closer and picked up two additional vampire scents. Six vampires had been here. Gwin never had a chance.

He called out to her tentatively in his head as stepped on the door. As she opened to him, he felt her pain and anguish. The others had left and taken Matthew with them.

Gwin sat on the floor against the bar that separated the kitchen from the living room. She had her knees pulled up to her chest, and she was crying hard. Nothing like he’d ever seen from her. She was beyond words. He went to her and knelt. He touched her leg, and she slowly tilted her head up to look at him.

Tears streamed down her face. “They took him,” she managed between sobs. Her heart wasn’t simply broken. No, nothing as easy as that. Her heart was shattered. And Tobia felt every bit of her pain. His own echoed it. He pulled her up in his arms, rocking her back and forth. If he ever questioned his love for her before, he didn’t any longer. It was there between them like a physical thing, and it was stronger than anything he had ever known. He projected that swelling feeling back to her. He had to. She needed to know, and she needed it now. She’d been badly defeated when she’d most needed to protect Matthew.

Tobia kissed the top of her head and projected what reassurance he could. We’ll find them. I will track them down.

“I swear to you, if he hurts Matthew, I will tear him apart with my bare hands.” He felt the intensely ferocious venom in her words, powerful enough to make him lean away from her.

“Gwin, we’ll find them.”

She stood, took a deep breath, and wiped her face with the sleeve of her shirt. He’d promised Matthew earlier that very evening that he would not let something like this happen. He had failed. He had failed them both. Gwin had been hurt.

“I’m fine,” she said reading his thoughts. “A good feed, and I’ll be like new.” She stood up and stepped away, giving Tobia a good view of the damaged wall. It had the imprint of her shoulders and back. “It was Tetrick and Myranta. I don’t know how they found us, or how they knew.” She paced the floor as she spoke. “Tetrick said Matthew is a muse, and they took him, and I don’t know where to look. I haven’t searched for them in a long time.”

“He’s a what?”

“Muse. Like Greek mythology.”

“Matthew? A muse? That’s bizarre. How could that be possible? Think he was lying to you?”

“No, I think he’s right. We’re possible, why not a muse?”

Tobia shook his head. He didn’t know what to think. Didn’t know what that even meant. And worse, he didn’t know what to do. He had never tried to track a vampire. He wasn’t so sure he could do it, but they had to try. His maker, Runihura’d had that talent, and Tobia had inherited other things from him, so he could figure it out. He had to.

“Okay, Gwin. Let’s focus. What do you know about this Tetrick? Where could he have gone?”

She stared at him for a long moment before answering. “I don’t know. I’m so damned tired of not knowing the answers, Tobia.”
