Carra's Review

Polyamorous relationships written well in a story can make for very satisfying reading, particularly for those who enjoy reading about the intricacies of relationships and relationship development.  Four Letter Word is one of those ones that is written well, and it’s those characters who are driving the story.

The four men that wind up coming together here have a head start with three of them (Bishop, Leo, and Hudson) being long-time best friends—though with Leo and Hudson estranged from each other at the start of the book—since middle school.  That estrangement is one of the hurdles in the way of that final puzzle piece clicking into place for the foursome.  Bishop is the anchor that holds everyone together; Leo, Hudson, and Riot are all drawn to him, and it’s like he’s the catalyst for their eventual…quartet? tetrad?  Pick your own term ;-)

Watching these relationships evolve was like seeing essential elements snap into place one by one.  Bishop and Riot.  Bishop and Hudson.  Bishop and Leo.  Riot and Hudson.  Riot and Leo.  And that final, elusive Leo and Hudson piece.  As each one locks into place, the connections grow stronger and deeper…and one that final piece clicks, as a reader you feel like everything is complete.  

Not only that, but the author achieves this in a realistic manner—though granted with all these moving parts and the issues they face this does take longer, so I couldn’t make this a single-sitting read.  There was nothing too angsty, and my only tiny frustration was Leo’s stubbornness when it came to hearing Hudson out regarding what caused their estrangement in the first place.

Four Letter Word is falling somewhere between 4-4.5 stars for me; readers looking for a believable, character-driven multi-M story will absolutely enjoy this book, and I would definitely recommend it.  The story is told from the point of view of all four men, something that contributes to the longer feel of the book but that also gives you a better understanding of each character.  You will find plenty of physically intimate scenes since all permutations of the foursome get a chance to shine…and those scenes plus the adult language make this book one for readers 18+.

Carra's Review

Felice Stevens once again delivers a wonderful story with this second chance romance.  Monroe had already captured my attention when I read the first book in this series, Fool for Love, so I quickly seized the opportunity to discover his story here in The Promise.

The reunion between Monroe (“Roe”) and Ezra is more than a little rocky, and it was frustrating to me how Roe kept on cutting off any attempt Ezra would make to speak with him to figure out what happened.  Then, once everything was explained I got frustrated with Ezra for his reaction.  So both of them frustrated me equally, and I couldn’t wait until they could get past all of that.

It did take a long while for it to feel like they belonged together again, but once they each got past their own issues they did make a great match.  The story did have some predictability to it (I felt the same way about book one too), but I still enjoyed watching these two come back together again.  Roe’s grandmother helped with that—she’s definitely a great supporting character and a bright spot in this story.

The Promise was a solid 4-star read for me, and fans of this author as well as contemporary romance fans in general are going to enjoy this book.  You don’t need to read Fool for Love first, but you’ll probably want to check it out anyway to get the background on some of the minor characters that appear here in The Promise.  This book is meant for readers 18+ for adult language and sexual content.

Carra's Review

After reading the prequel to the series, The Magician’s Apprentice, I was eagerly awaiting the release of Stormdrake to see how Jander and Andrei’s adventures would unfold.  Stormdrake doesn’t disappoint, and stepping back into this world felt easy and comfortable since the majority of the world-building took place in the prequel.

Here we find Jander and Andrei have become more relaxed and secure in their personal relationship.  We don’t get to see much training going on, but that can be attributed in part to the new situation in which they find themselves with the appearance of another dragon causing havoc in the kingdom.

There is a good balance of tension, action, and intrigue, plus new characters are introduced who are well developed and contribute well to the storyline—in particular Stephan, a fellow mage, and Tanith, a servant.  I was pleased see the return of Boaen as I really liked his character in the prequel, and he was a great support to Jander and Andrei in this story.

As events develop, it begins to become obvious that there is a lot more to everything that is going on than what happens in this book, and the darkness that they are facing goes deeper than they realize.  This has me intrigued for the next books in the series, not just for following Jander and Andrei as they continue to battle against the evil that’s threatening the entire kingdom, but also for the evolution of Jander’s talents as he has shown he has incredible potential.

The apex of the conflict in Stormdrake comes to an unexpected conclusion (which is actually a bit sweet…you’ll see what I mean), and while this portion of the story does wrap up, it’s evident there is a lot more on the horizon—and plenty for readers to look forward to.  4.5 stars for Stormdrake, and I would highly recommend you read the prequel before starting this book so you have a strong frame of reference and understand the backstory…it may be hard to follow along otherwise.  This story is meant for readers 18+ for adult language and sexual content.
