I tragically lost my sixteen year old daughter to a drunk driver. She had just been at home, it was early in the night and I heard the accident happen. I'll never forget that moment. The sirens were immediate and something inside me just knew. I left my house, drove straight to the accident on nothing more than instinct. I got to be there when my little girl died - weirdly, I consider that a true gift from above. She didn't have to be alone.

That time in my life was terrible. It's everything you think it would be times about a billion. I love that kid. I loved being her mother and I loved watching her grow into this incredibly beautiful person, both inside and out. She was such a gift to me. To have it all ripped away so suddenly broke me.

Her name was Kindle. Honest to goodness - it was her name and she died a few weeks before Amazon released their brand new Kindle ereader. She had no idea it was coming out and she would have finally gotten her name on something! Try finding a ruler with the name Kindle on it.. It never happened.

Through the course of that crippling event I was lucky enough to begin to write with a dear friend in the fan fiction world of Facebook. She got me through those dark days with her unwavering support and friendship. There wasn't a time she wasn't there for me. Sometimes together and sometimes by myself, we built a world where Kindle lives and stands for peace, love and harmony. It's its own kind of support group. I know without question I wouldn't be here today without her.

“Are you going to say something or just stare at my ass until dinner’s done?”

Holy sh*t, he had been staring at that ass and who the hell could blame him? Didn’t he know firsthand how fine that ass looked and felt? “What the f*ck, Ric? What are you doing here? How did you get in?”

“Cooking dinner so we can eat before we run, and I have a key,” Alaric answered without turning and continued to move food around a frying pan as if he had the first f*cking clue how to cook. He never cooked or rarely ever cooked in the years they spent together.

Dumbfounded, Davin wasn’t sure he heard correctly. “You have a key?”

“Yep.” The spatula-free hand gestured toward the small breakfast bar. “It’s over there with my wallet if you want to take it.”

Obviously, there was no point in bothering. “You have copies.”

“Of course, I do.”

Of course, you do. You are Alaric Bennett and locked doors just magically open for you.

Then the rest of his words registered. “We aren’t running anywhere.”

“You didn’t come home to run?” Alaric finally looked over his shoulder, one perfectly sculpted eyebrow lifting as if to say, ‘who are you trying to kid?’ That subtle arrogance directly affected Davin’s libido and Alaric knew it. “Right. That’s what I thought.”

“If you came here to talk…”

“Do I look like I want to f*cking talk?” Slamming the spatula on the stove, Alaric turned, reached out and curled a hand around the back of his neck, shrinking the already small space between them to nothing. “Or that either of us is ready for that conversation? You need to eat, you need to run, and you need to sleep. In that order. Go get changed.”

“Ric.” Davin was appalled to hear the helplessness in his tone, the one that begged Alaric to complete the embrace and finally give him a safe place to rest.

“Go get changed, Davin, now.”

With their foreheads touching, Davin could see that he wasn’t the only one all tied up in their emotions. That Alaric, who had always been so strong, was barely holding it together. In that moment, Davin realized he expected Alaric to take the news of his brother’s death, delivered by an ex-lover, the way he did everything else. With strength and stoicism, do what needs to be done and never show any emotion. Except with Davin, Alaric never hid them, and it was ridiculous to think he would start now.

No, they weren’t ready for that conversation and Alaric was right about what he needed, so retreat seemed the obvious choice. This—the dinner, the pretense of caring about what he needed—was nothing more than a way to ease some guilt. Maybe if he let Alaric get it out of his system, they could both move on.

You’d think all the walking and fresh air would’ve made me sleep like the dead , but you’d be wrong. When my phone rang the morning after dinner with Brook, I could’ve sworn it’d only been a couple of hours since I’d lain down on the luxurious mattress in my room. 

I’d tossed and turned all night, trying to figure out how I’d read Brook so wrong. He’d been fun and flirty all night, until the end, when his face had gone blank and he’d pulled away when I leaned in to kiss him. 

And what in the hell was that all about, anyway? I wasn’t a kisser. I mean, I didn’t have anything against kissing, but it wasn’t part of my standard operating procedure when it came to hookups. Time making out like teenagers was much better spent getting naked and on with the main event. But with Brook, it was different. The stress had melted away as we walked along the beach. I’d enjoyed the way he fit against my side, the little sighs he made when he was happy. When he fell , I wanted nothing more than to take care of him. Carra's Review

The Little Things was a sweet story focusing on Joel dealing with grief and loss while still navigating his everyday life, including his love life where certain aspects become very clear and others not so much.  He has to do this while caring for his adorable daughter Evie…and while I’m not one to care for kids in romance books too much, Evie was just right—not overly enchanting (or the opposite bratty child), and doesn’t steal the scenes from the main characters.

Joel seemed to have a good life at the start of the story, though for me personally I wasn’t a fan of the logistics of his relationship with Dan (Dan’s side of things).  After Joel’s loss though, as with many things in life after a big life event, things change once he comes to certain realizations.  Liam enters the picture slowly after that, but once he does things with him move fast—though to me it never felt too fast since everything between him and Joel seemed to click right from the start, and their emotional and physical chemistry were easily obvious.

There were times that I felt there was too much day-to-day stuff described that didn’t need to be there since it didn’t really add to the story, particularly in the first half of the book.  This did make the first half go a bit slowly for me, but once past that and into the portion of the story that concentrated more fully on Joel and Liam I fell more easily into it.

While I’ve heard some readers don’t consider this a romance, I would have to disagree.  Yes, this story is about Joel dealing with his grief, but it’s about him navigating his romantic relationships during that time, how he deals with it affecting his outlook for those relationships., and it’s about him falling in love while trying to protect his heart.

The Little Things was a 4-star read for me; I think if the daily life things that were so thoroughly described were cut down in the story, I’d be rating at least 4.5.  That said, this is definitely a story I’d recommend to M/M romance fans.  This book is meant for readers 18+ for adult language and sexual content.

Thanks for hosting me today Carra for the Gay for Pay re-release blog tour. I decided to go back and dig up a guest post where I talked about the inspiration for the book and the characters, so here that is…

Today I’m going to talk about visual inspiration and what my main characters look like. Let me start by saying, this book was inspired by a conversation I had at GRL 2014 in Chicago with a couple great guys. Randy Blue stars Jordan Levine and Caleb Strong are my Chris and Linc, so they were the guys I saw for the most part while I was writing the story. I did tweek Christopher’s appearance a little, so he’s sort of a mixture of Jordan Levine and actor Richard Madden (Rob Stark GOT). Chris has Jordan’s body and ink, but the look and feel of Richard with his wavy Auburn hair and smile. Lincoln is all Caleb though, right down to that amazing body and cute little shy smile. 

For my threesome I knew I wanted their appearance to fit their role and their characteristics. Victor has this sex on a stick Romanian accent and a hypnotic personality, for him I chose Luke Evans. Andrew is driven and focused but down to earth with a motherly side, for him I chose Matt Bomer. And Mattie, god how I love Mattie, this character really took on a life of his own while I was writing. For him I chose a young Charlie Hunnum. Think the British version of Queer as Folk, NOT Sons of Anarchy. 

Most of the time I will choose a visual point of reference for a character before I start writing, but with Officer Jon and Kory it was different. I didn’t find their images until after I’d finished the first draft. I think the fit well though, so we’ll see as the books progress.

I wrote this post back in 2014 when Gay for Pay initially released and I was reminded of that time not only because of the re-release, but because we recently lost the lovely lady that introduced me to Jordan and Caleb, Sandrine Gasq-Dion. Her passing was sudden, unexpected and very heartbreaking for anyone that knew her. But in the days since her passing, I’m reminded of just how influential she was in our close knit community. Were it not for my friendship with Sandy, I may have stopped writing before I even published my first book. She gave me purpose and drive when I was ready to throw in the towel. And then she was key to me meeting the two guys that inspired the All Cocks stories. Goddamn, I miss that bitch! But she’ll continue to live on in our memories, in us retelling stories of time we got to spend with her.

Carra's Review

I found this to be a fascinating look into the gay porn industry as well as a moving story.  I honestly never even thought about straight men doing the "gay for pay" thing before reading this, it's something that would have never occurred to me at all (which sure makes you think!).  But the author takes a subject that could be considered off-key and sensitive and turns it into a quite interesting story of one man's journey to find acceptance, forgiveness, and eventually love.

One of the things I really love about this story is how the All Cocks group is portrayed as a family--a patchwork of friends, co-workers, and lovers but a wonderful family nonetheless.  The entire cast of characters is intriguing, and the way they are written makes you want to hear every one of their stories (yes, even Kory, the requisite jerk of the group). 

I thought Chris' character had a lot of depth, and watching as he finds a new kind of family to see who he really is and take him in regardless of his past makes for a very enjoyable read.  Linc fits quite well with Chris, and is patient, supportive and caring as Chris becomes comfortable in his new life and being with a man.  Once Chris moves past the awkward stage, the chemistry between the two of them is electric which translates into some crazy hot intimate scenes both on camera and off.  

This was the first book I'd read by T.M. Smith, and after finishing I went on to read the rest of her books in this series, and I can highly recommend every single one of them.  A great M/M romance and voyage of discovery, Gay for Pay was a 4.5-star read for me.  This second edition of the story gives readers an even better look at the characters, and was even more satisfying than the first one.  Recommended strictly for 18+ due to explicit M/M sexual content.
