Rude Awakening

A sharp knock followed by the doorbell clanging woke Kevin and Hugo. They yanked on last night’s discarded clothes and headed downstairs, Lulu trailing behind, her tail wagging a mile a minute.

When Kevin opened the door, a man he didn’t recognize gave him a nod. “Are you Kevin Magnus?”

“Yes.”

Hugo struggled to scoop Lulu into his arms; she was desperate to meet this stranger.

The man handed Kevin a manila envelope. “You’ve been served.”

“What the hell?” Hugo asked as he shut the door.

“I don’t know. Let’s see.” Kevin opened the envelope and pulled out papers. “Notice of Motion and Motion for Change of Custody,” he read, not believing his eyes. He flipped through the pages, scanning to see what this was really about.

“Erin’s parents are trying to get custody of my kids. No way in hell is that happening. No way in hell.”

Carra's Review

I have been addicted to Hugo and Kevin since they first came back together in Spark, and I’ve been a tireless cheerleaders for them ever since.  They’ve been through a lot so far, one crazy emotional rollercoaster, and you know from the synopsis that the up and down ride is not nearly done.  There’s plenty going on in this final installment of the trilogy…almost too much actually…but Hugo and Kevin’s love for each other is something that consistently shines through no matter what is thrown at them.

From the synopsis, I was expecting Erin’s parents to be the main antagonists here—and for a little while, they were.  I already was no fan of theirs after finishing Fusion, but here I went from dislike to being outright livid.  If the author was looking to provoke a reaction with this part of the story, she sure as heck succeeded.  But what I wasn’t expecting was how easily things would be resolved much earlier than I’d expected (relatively speaking compared to the length of time over which the story takes place).  It was almost anti-climactic for me after the buildup early on.  Even so, Erin’s mother still has more to express, which just led me to get ticked off with her all over again.

It’s not just Hugo and Kevin with issues, but Kevin’s daughter Brooke also has some of her own.  After being livid with Erin’s parents (her mother in particular), the situation with Brooke moved me to downright incensed.  But Brooke shows amazing strength of character—especially for someone her age, and just as Hugo and Kevin have grown through this series, Brooke’s character goes through her own growth as well.

Hugo and Kevin are just as hot together now as they were when they first met back up again in book one.  This time around, they’re trying some new things…just in case you didn’t think they were sizzling enough when they were together before ;-)

There’s also added angst with Hugo trying to fit in with their neighborhood friends.  His uptown, open-minded, diverse personality clashes with their suburbanite attitudes to add just one more thing to the rest of the drama in the story.  And for some extra turmoil, there’s things going on with Hugo’s best friend Summer too that add to Hugo and Kevin’s already overfull plate.

There really is quite a bit going on, and there are points during the story when I actually felt unsure of where things might head with Hugo and Kevin’s relationship.  Everything did feel somewhat drawn out, taking a while to resolve all the issues going on, so a few times my attention did start to wander.  But the ending is a solid one, and left me with an overall happy feeling about the series.  Flare was a 4-star read for me, even when I was slogging through certain parts when things felt the most drawn out.  This series needs to be read in order to understand everything that is going on, but you’ll find that Hugo and Kevin are easy to fall for once you start.  This book is meant for readers 18+ for adult language and sexual content.

Earthquake

To say Kevin was pissed was an understatement. He was well into the realm of seething. Enraged. Hell, foaming at the mouth might’ve been a better description.

Hugo did everything in his power to ooze calm, to appear unruffled, and to concentrate as he read through the legal documents.

Kevin barely scanned the papers before handing them over with shaking hands, saying, “Please tell me these aren’t saying what I think they are.”

Unfortunately, the papers lacked details they both wanted, so Hugo was unsure how to respond.

Why would they do this?

Kevin’s in-laws wanted custody of the kids. And not temporarily, but until Brooke and Finn turned eighteen. So, Kyle and Tasha Clarke, Kevin’s late wife’s parents, wanted to take his kids away from him.

With every passing second, Hugo’s silence and forced calm brought Kevin closer to apoplectic.

“It says here the kids are experiencing harm.” Hugo pointed to a paragraph. “Well, Finn in particular. I don’t get why they say that. Finn’s doing great now.” As great as a six-year-old could months after losing his mom to a horrific battle with brain cancer.

He’d had the hardest time of anyone, at least when looking from the outside in. Finn wore his emotions on his sleeve, especially compared to his eleven-year-old sister. Brooke kept all sorts of feelings bottled up, but that didn’t mean she wasn’t grieving. That was just her way.

What did the Clarkes expect after the kids lost their mom? Sunshine and unicorns? Did they expect that loss wouldn’t have long-lasting effects? They were in the depths of mourning, and that didn’t wash off the day after the funeral or the week after, and certainly not just three months after. But the kids had made great strides in therapy and were now open about their feelings.

“Oh, Christ.” Kevin gripped his hair in ferocious panic, eyes flashing. “I know exactly what this is.”

Witnessing Kevin so out of sorts frightened Hugo. He always handled problems with reserved calm.

Kevin untangled his fingers from blond hair that had grown back thicker and shinier after their solidarity shave when Erin lost her hair. Kevin’s new emotion looked a lot like guilt.

“When I took them up to Fargo last month, Finn had one of his awful meltdowns.” Kevin paced between the living room and the kitchen. Hugo saw him thinking.

Finn’s meltdowns started not long after Erin died, along with nightmares and bed-wetting. Brooke had nightmares too. For a very long time, Kevin’s bed was filled with not only Hugo, but also Brooke and Finn trying to fall back asleep. The dog too. It was a good thing Kevin had a California King; they were still squished, but they made do. The kids needed them.

The entire house was in mourning. Erin died at the end of February, and it wasn’t until now, as the school year finished and summer started, that everyone got on the right track again. Sort of. At least they were no longer reeling in pain they couldn’t comprehend.

The knock on Kevin’s front door that morning was like a bucket of ice-cold water dragging them back into the gloom they’d worked tirelessly to crawl away from. They’d done everything in their power for the past nine months to be honest with Kevin’s kids while still protecting them.

It was hard.

It was f*cking hard.

In the kitchen, Hugo poured kibble into Lulu’s bowl as Kevin hit Start on the coffeemaker, grabbed the cream, and pulled down two mugs. Kevin leaned against the counter.

“I don’t even know what set him off,” Kevin said, “but Finn was in the family room with Kyle and Tasha. I was playing a game with Brooke in the kitchen. He screamed. When I ran in, Kyle was about to hit him. Instinct took over, and I did what we always do when he loses it; I held him in a bear hug and talked until he calmed down.”

“That’s it? You think that’s why they’re trying to take your kids away, cuz you helped Finn come back to center?” Hugo asked in disbelief.

“I can’t think what else it would be.” Kevin finally took a deep breath.

If the bear hug was it, no judge in their right mind would take the kids away based on a therapist-approved calming technique.

“Tasha said I was upsetting him more, but I told her the bear hug settled him.”

“But Kyle was about to hit him? Like, slap him or what?” Hugo asked.

“Probably. I’m not sure. I was focused on Finn, but it didn’t look good.”

“Did you ever find out what set him off?”

“Nothing specific, but after that, Finn wanted to go home. He was nervous. What did they say to him? He only has those meltdowns when he feels helpless. Maybe he’d be willing to talk more about it now. He sure as heck wasn’t then. I haven’t asked for at least a week.”

It was Saturday, so they’d have to wait until Monday to talk to Kevin’s lawyer about the papers, which was frustrating as hell. They discussed calling the Clarkes, but considering there were legal papers in hand, that wasn’t prudent. Let the lawyer handle it because he understood the law, they both agreed.

“Are you sure you can’t just call your lawyer at home?” Hugo tried. “Or do you have lawyer friends? There’s got to be something you can do.”

“Mark would probably be fine if I called him at home if it were an emergency, but this isn’t.”

Hugo rested his palm in the center of Kevin’s chest. His heart thundered, and when Hugo looked up into his gray eyes, there were tears. Kevin so rarely cried, only if he felt out of control. Sliding a hand to his neck, Hugo teased the downy skin behind his ear where it met up with blond hair.

“Just call him, love,” Hugo whispered. “Let him triple bill you. Who cares if it’s an emergency in his eyes? It’s an emergency in yours, and I can feel it right here. Your heart’s going a million miles an hour.”

“Do they know?” Kevin’s voice tightened. “Do they have any clue how hard these last months have been on the kids? What we’ve done to make life better for them?” He answered his own questions with a shake of his head. “They left after the funeral and barely talked to my kids since. Their own grandkids. They’re mourning the loss too. I get that. But I thought our visit up there went well, except that one thing. Gah! I didn’t go there soon enough.”

“Don’t second-guess yourself. Call Mark. He knows custody law. He can answer questions you don’t even know to ask.”

Kevin grabbed his phone and picked up his pacing again as he waited for his lawyer to answer.

Carra's Review

After how much I loved the first book in this trilogy (Spark), I couldn’t wait to dive right in to Fusion to see how Hugo and Kevin’s relationship would progress.  What was waiting for me was a lot of angst, drama, and a continual unsure feeling throughout the story as Erin’s “grim news” turns into the major story arc.

For me, the heavy concentration on that news and its affect on the entire family did become almost overwhelming at times.  It does provoke character growth for Hugo, but even more so for Kevin, who suddenly has much more responsibility than he’d had before.  It also changes the dynamic of their relationship as their “unconventional family” takes shape.

In Fusion, we not only get to read from Hugo and Kevin’s points of view, but there are also some scenes where Erin is the one we’re hearing from.  This does provide the unique perspective from someone outside the relationship, but still incredibly close—and not just because she’s Kevin’s ex.  Her acceptance of their relationship and her need to see them happy without feeling they have to hide was admirable, and leads to a turning point for them as well.

I was not a fan of Erin’s parents and their views, but especially not of how they spoke about Hugo and treated him.  Erin and her brother Russell though, they do get some very big hugs from me.  Summer, Hugo’s best friend, is back in this story and is just as supportive now as she was in Spark…she even gets a bit of her own happiness here too.

Overall, Fusion was a 4-star read for me.  The more somber tone of the story and focus on Erin’s situation made this a more serious read, but still had moments of love and beauty (the scene in the ocean in particular…sorry, there’s my teasing you for this review).  I’m so very ready for the final story in this trilogy to see how things finally play out for Hugo and Kevin!  Before reading Fusion, it is necessary for you to read Spark—this cannot be read as a standalone.  Also, this book is meant for readers 18+ for adult language and sexual content, but also be aware that serious health issues take center stage for this story, which may upset some readers who have gone through something similar with their own family or friends.

Carra's Review

I was never able to get around to getting this series when it first came out, but I am SO glad I was finally able to read this now with the re-release.  Second chance romance is one of my absolute favorite tropes, and everything about this story captured my attention.  That it is also friends-to-lovers just made it even more enticing.  And while I normally don’t particularly care for children in romance books, Kevin’s kids are pretty cool and do add depth to the story.

As far as main characters go, I couldn’t have asked for two better guys.  Hugo knows exactly who he is, and is comfortable in his skin.  He’s talented and intelligent, and I really liked how supportive he and his best friend Summer were for each other.  Kevin’s home life growing up was quite a bit different from Hugo’s.  Kevin’s father is a character that I strongly disliked, and not just because of his homophobic attitude.  He was the classic power-hungry, money-centered father who had Kevin’s entire life mapped out.  Unfortunately, at that stage of Kevin’s life he’s just not strong enough to break free of that.  The second time around is a whole other story though, and it was very satisfying to see the growth Kevin’s character went through.

When Hugo and Kevin meet again the second time around, it’s almost as if nothing changed—that’s how comfortable they are together even all these years later.  As close as they became as teens, now that chemistry is still there and as adults the physical aspect is obvious and even stronger.  The process of getting to know each other all over again made for some great reading, especially as they are discovering new facets of each others’ lives.

Spark is one of those books where I stayed up way too far past my bedtime trying to finish in one sitting; I just didn’t want to put it down.  Once I was done, I immediately wanted to pick up the next book to see where their relationship went from here, especially after something Kevin’s daughter says to them near the end of the story (sorry, a tease I know).  I can’t wait to read more about Hugo and Kevin, because together they’ve captured my heart and I really want things to work out for them.

Spark was a 5-star read for me, and is a fantastic start to this trilogy.  Hugo and Kevin are characters the reader will easily care for, and they’re surrounded with a strong cast of supporting characters in their friends and family.  They are amazing together—not to mention hot and sexy when it comes to the physical side of their relationship.  I highly recommend this book to any and every M/M romance fan.  This book is meant for readers 18+ for adult language and sexual content.

Posy Roberts started reading romance when she was young, sneaking peeks at adult books long before she should've. Textbooks eventually replaced the novels, and for years she existed without reading for fun. When she finally picked up a romance two decades later, it was like slipping on a soft hoodie . . . that didn't quite fit like it used to. She wanted something more.

She wanted to read about men falling in love with each other. She wanted to explore beyond the happily ever after and see characters navigate the unpredictability of life. So Posy sat down at her keyboard to write the books she wanted to read.

Her stories have been USA Today's Happily Ever After Must-Reads and Rainbow Award finalists. When she's not writing, she's spending time with her family and friends and doing anything possible to get out of grocery shopping and cooking.
