Barely Regal by E. Davies

Rosavia Royals, Book 5

 RR-5-BarelyRegal-Davies-Medium

A bratty boy prince needs a firm but fair Daddy.

Prince Renford is a royal brat. Nineteen and last in line for the throne, Wren hates his made-up job: Commander of Roses. Good thing his long-time valet has a firm hand—if only Wren could tempt him to break all palace protocol and use it.

Thom Pierce is sixteen years older. Old enough to know he should ignore his prince's less-than-subtle flirtation. He's been burned by a higher-ranked boy before. His job and reputation are at stake if the palace catches a scandal unfolding under their noses.

Wren needs the part of Thom that he's kept locked away for years. If the young prince wants to be taken as seriously as his older brothers, he has to grow up fast. Thom's rules could help Wren become the man Thom knows he can be in time for the Royal Ball... or they could attract the very attention that forces them apart forever.

Exclusive from Ed & the Inspirations behind his Prince

How did you become a part of this project/world?
Funny story, actually! The covers came first—they started out as premade covers from our wonderful cover designer, AngstyG. The time zones happened to work out perfectly: I was on vacation and Helen (HJ Welch) was awake late, so we saw them straight away. Helen said, “We HAVE to do an MM royalty shared universe!” and that was it!
We’d already learned how to build a shared world while working together to run Men of Hidden Creek (I herd the cats and set up and Helen cheerleads). So we quickly set about recruiting our shared beta reader, editor, etc, and reaching out to authors as we started collaboratively building the world of Rosavia. This time, we’ve really focused on getting all the authors to beta-read for each other as we wrote so that we could nail as many crossovers as possible. And I’ve also been the main series organizer post-draft-completion, so I feel like I’ve been living in Rosavia since late February! It’s very weird but incredibly exciting to finally share it with the rest of the world.

Where did your story’s inspiration come from?
The title of Barely Regal came to me first; I knew I wanted to write the story of the youngest prince, and as a youngest child myself, I knew that he was going to be a feisty little rebel who hadn’t yet learned the importance of his own duties. Muddy little Renford (or Wren, for short) came to life in a flash. I also knew from the very start that I wanted to write his valet, Thom Pierce, experiencing a conflict of interest between his palace duties and the pull he feels to fulfil Wren’s needs.
Also, on the cover, Wren has mud streaked across his neck. I decided that he’s learning to garden, and that the roses in Rosavia represent each family. Each royal family member has their own rose created for them at birth, so when they marry, another rose is created by crossing the couple’s varieties. Of course, when you’re marrying someone you were never expected to end up with, this creates complications…

How did you create your Prince?
Once I realized that Wren had to be the youngest prince, his bratty, flirtatious nature was obvious. And every brat needs a Daddy! The obvious man for the job was Thom, the quiet valet who has guided and steered him for the last decade. These two just came to life at the same moment, because they’re so made-for-each-other.
I really wanted to tell the story of Wren growing into his duties. Through the course of the story, Wren starts off feeling like he’s not taken seriously. I think last-born kids can relate to that feeling of being babied for too long, and it’s not helped by his own bratty nature! But luckily someone’s there to see what’s immaturity and what’s Wren’s need for a strong guiding hand. Over the story, Wren comes to realize that he’s actually playing an important role in telling the royal family’s story, and his unique talents matter.

Carra's Review

Now that I’ve reached the final book of the series, I’m finding it hard to decide which has been my favorite.  I must say though that Barely Regal does have an bit of an edge not just for the off-limits romance between the youngest prince, Wren, and his valet, Thom, not just for the age gap romance, and not just for the Daddy/boy relationship with a bit of kink thrown in.  It’s for all of those aspects put together.

Both Wren and Thom have been attracted to each other for a while.  Thom though is very conscious of his place in the royal household, and his duty comes first.  Then there’s Wren, and his insistent pushing…and pushing…and pushing with his bratty, deliberate behavior.  Wren’s tired of waiting and hoping, and is working now to spark something into happening.  Someone needs to get him in line, and you know exactly who it will be.

Wren’s character goes through plenty of growth in this story—not just with his relationship with Thom, which does center him and increase his patience, but also with how he’s finding his place within the family and his royal duties.

As for that relationship with Thom?  their characters do complement each other, and Thom is exactly what Wren needs to settle him down.  If one of the ways in which he does so is through discipline and training (read: spankings and light BDSM), all the better for us readers ;-)

4.5 stars for Barely Regal…my only regret with this story is that a certain nosy so-called reporter doesn’t get quite what she truly deserves at the royal ball—I was really hoping for something more profound.  Maybe painful.  And embarrassing (for her).  Ah, well…this is still a fantastic read and as with the other stories in the series it is meant for readers 18+ for adult language and sexual content.

Check out the other books in the series:

Book 1: Up for Heir By Stella Starling

1

A playboy heir needs a man to marry, right now.

After spending half his life dodging his duty to the crown, the rebel heir to the Rosavian throne has been told in no uncertain terms that it’s time to settle down. Crown Prince Leopold has one month and a vetted list of suitable princesses, and he will announce his engagement during Rosavia’s Royal Ball. But Leo’s got his own ideas about what really suits him…

Royal Librarian Edvin Blom is good at not attracting attention. Shy and self-conscious of his stutter, he’s used to being overlooked and more than happy to stay in the background. At least, until the crown prince with a wild reputation shows up at the library’s new opening and decides to flirt with Edvin’s sister…

Edvin isn’t at all what Leo thought he wanted, but turns out to be everything he can’t stay away from. Edvin’s been burned by falling for someone out of his league before, though. And believing that Leo has really fallen for him? While Edvin’s drowning in his own doubts and insecurities, that might prove impossible… unless love gives them both a reason to come up for air.

Guest Post: THE MEN OF HIDDEN CREEK NEW SEASON by E. Davies

Please welcome author E. Davies to Making it Happen!

Thank you for inviting me to your blog today!

I wanted to share some special news with you. You might have heard of the Men of Hidden Creek before. This series has already seen three seasons, first launching in April 2018. Each season of MOHC happens at roughly the same time, so you see crossovers with other books happening in the background. That's why you can read each season in any order you like. For each season, we picked a suggested order that we think flows well. Everyone usually comes up with their own favorite order after reading them! :)

You don't need to read previous seasons, since we always reestablish the world and characters in later seasons. But if you want to start from the beginning, you'll spot the most crossovers. So there’s still time to catch up before… well… the big news coming in a moment!

And now for the news… we were planning to finish our time in Hidden Creek at the end of season three, but we just couldn’t stay away. We knew there were too many unfinished stories to be told… so we’re back for season four, launching in August-September 2019.

Unlike previous seasons, these books will be launching every week over six weeks. And they will all be available in ebook, audio, and print on release day, so you can keep up with the world as it unfolds!

Here’s the blurb for Radiant, the first book in this season (by Blake Roland).

“Nothing is going to keep us apart.”

Dalton Powell has been living a lie. Terrified of coming out as bisexual, he’s given up on romance. Instead, he finds solace in hard work on his family’s struggling ranch. But his life is turned upside down as his past mistakes come back to haunt him—and steal his heart.

Thomas Reed never expected to come back to Hidden Creek. Old wounds are reopened as he returns to his family’s ranch and finds himself face to face with the last person he ever wanted to see again: Dalton. Despite his initial distrust, Thomas can’t deny the overpowering attraction between them.

Letting go of the past is hard when their families’ generations-long feud throws up obstacles at every turn. Forgiveness never comes easy, but they are determined to prove to their families that love really can overcome anything. But can they hold themselves together long enough to succeed?

Welcome to Hidden Creek, Texas, where the heart knows what it wants, and where true love lives happily ever after. Every Men of Hidden Creek novel can be read on its own, but keep an eye out for familiar faces around town! This book contains romantic horseback rides, a thrilling rodeo, and a kiss that could finally end a bitter feud.

The entire season is available for preorder, if you want to make sure you don’t miss a story. We have a great lineup of established Men of Hidden Creek veterans and new authors coming to you this season…

“I’m gonna go from twink to twunk.”

Tired of hookups, Caspian Grey is hitting the gym, though he can’t decide who he’s trying to impress—the sexy gym owner, or his dating app buddy, Bi Unicorn. If he can pack on some muscles, maybe a man will finally overlook his quirks and hold onto him.

Matt Rowan owns a safe, welcoming gym, but his bank account and love life are equally empty. Matt is too shy to ask out members—even the intriguing new guy. If only he could talk himself into meeting Swishy Like Wine, who seems like a perfect fit for the hole in his heart.

When homophobic protesters harass Matt's gym members, things risk falling apart completely, but Caspian supports his decision not to give them an inch. If they can learn to open up face-to-face, they might both be exactly what the other man needs.

Welcome to Hidden Creek, Texas, where the heart knows what it wants, and where true love lives happily ever after. Every Men of Hidden Creek novel can be read on its own, but keep an eye out for familiar faces around town! This book contains blush-inducing text messages, sassy church ladies to the rescue, and two badly timed gifts.

Excerpt

It was one of those weirdly busy evenings—several groups of friends arrived, a big group of athletes who lived closer to this gym than their usual rec center, and a few newbies who needed spotting.
Busy was good, though. Busy paid the rent.
After Matt locked up, he realized he’d almost forgotten his charging phone. He had to sprint back inside for it and just beat the security alarm before getting the door closed again. His adrenaline still racing, he glanced at his alerts and raised his eyebrow.
Someone had messaged him on Grindr a few hours ago. Goddamn, it was probably too late. If they were after a quickie, they would have found someone else by now.
Still, he paused after buckling up, but before pulling out of the lot. With a swipe of his finger, he opened the app and waited to see what the message was.
swishy like wine: Hey there. I was in the area and spotted you. Nice abs! Mind if I ask how you got them?
That was probably the most creative opening line he’d seen in months, which spoke volumes about the kind of interaction Grindr encouraged.
Granted, his profile picture was a headless torso shot, which was basically a signal for f*ck me but don’t talk to me in the morning, but it wouldn’t kill a guy to try now and then to boost his ego, at least. He liked Swishy already.
Smiling, Matt tapped out a message.
bi unicorn: Hey, sorry, I was at work. No problem! My routine’s pretty simple if you’re up for diet + exercise.
He checked the guy’s profile. The name already had him laughing. Swishy’s profile was pretty plain, with no photo, but he did say in the profile text that he wanted to meet fun people, not just for fun.
Judging by his stats, he was probably scrawny—he described himself as slim, which was the closest descriptor you could get on Grindr.
It wasn’t uncommon for guys to ask Matt about his routine. Back in Houston—when he’d lived there for college before he’d gotten sucked into 24/7 business ownership life—it had led to friendships. Why not try that again?
If Swishy wanted to meet for wine sometime, Matt occasionally let himself break his diet. Drinks might lead to more, they might not. At least it wasn’t another boring, secretive hookup in the dead of night. And it sure as hell beat sitting around at home, alone, staring through the TV.
He was home before he had his answer. He kicked his shoes off without even looking and dropped his keys on the table, too busy reading the response.
swishy like wine: I can do both… hopefully. Last time I lifted weights I nearly broke a toe.
The candid honesty had Matt laughing out loud. Not only did Swishy write complete sentences, but it was already easy to tell he had a wicked sense of humor.
bi unicorn: OMG. I don’t know about this then. I don’t want to send you to the ER.
swishy like wine: Worth it for abs like yours. ;)
Matt snickered and headed for the kitchen to grab half a gallon of milk and his dinner. “To hit on him or not to hit on him…” By the time he’d heated up the chicken breast, beans, and broccoli, he had his answer. “Definitely hit on him.”
He grabbed his phone and cracked his knuckles.
bi unicorn: Well, before I give you advice, I want to see what I’m working with. ;)
swishy like wine: I bet you think you’re smooth ;P
bi unicorn: I know I’m smooth! how close did you look at my photo?
swishy like wine: I plead the 5th
Matt laughed even harder this time. The flirting endorphins had kicked in, making him feel like he was floating between the microwave and the dining room table as he took his dinner there. He tried to come up with witty things to say as he ate.
bi unicorn: This is about your close shave, not mine. Are you going to break a nail if you lift?
swishy like wine: Excuse you? This better not be some masc4masc sh*t bro. I can hack a good workout
bi unicorn: God no. I know femmes who can kick my ass… in heels
swishy like wine: Me too. Maybe we know the same people :)
Matt finished dinner and put away his plate as he debated where to take the conversation next. But before he could, Swishy sent him photos.
None with his face, which was unfortunate. Matt liked to see people’s eyes. It was a good indicator of who they were—however people tried to hide themselves, their eyes told the truth.
Then again, Swishy had been pretty open already. And these photos weren’t very subtle. He wore tight shorts and he was shirtless.
And he couldn’t help but notice as he zoomed in on the abs to check for definition and separation—there was none of either—the lace peeking up from the waistband.
Matt was pretty sure he liked the implications. In fact, he was a hundred percent certain he liked them.
Now what the hell was he going to do?
