This isn’t the life Cole dreamt of, but what choice does he have?

With his twenty-third birthday behind him, Cole Moreton now faces the shifter compatibility test which will decide his future. Testing positive means joining a pack and eventually taking the bite. Unfortunately, with enviable skills in self-defence and hand-to-hand combat, the kind of packs interested in him aren’t any he’d want to join.

Logan has been a member of the McKillan pack for most of his life. Pack is family and loyalty is everything, but when the shifter government turns out to be no better than the oppressive humans before them, he questions everything.

Right from their first meeting, Logan knows that a life with the McKillan pack isn’t right for Cole, but with his alpha taking a keen interest in Cole’s skills, Logan’s hands are tied. Mutual attraction builds between them, but acting on it is futile—helping Cole will put their lives at risk and an end to any future they could’ve had.

Carra's Review

There are so many shifter books out there, so I truly appreciate when an author starts a new shifter series with some new, unique points that I haven’t encountered previously.  It keeps the genre fresh for me (though I can’t really picture myself tiring of it regardless), and lets me think about shifters in a previously unseen way.  Annabelle Jacobs has done that here for me in Escape, and in doing so now has me hooked for this new series.

The idea of shifters being a case of the oppressed becoming the oppressors, as well as the testing and pack affiliations that happen once people reach a certain age was something I found intriguing.  Though at first I was just a tiny bit unsure about the McMillan pack and Michael McMillan’s way of ruling, the lure of what is essentially a shifter underground railroad combating the system drew me in quite easily to this world.

The relationship between Logan and Cole is more of a secondary focus to the threat presented by humans being forced to join packs and be bitten to become shifters.  Though there are people who are definitely okay with that, there’s also those who are clearly NOT (like Cole), and that discord erupts spectacularly in this story.  There’s plenty of action, suspense, and drama as Logan and Cole try to navigate their way to a safer solution, and Escape turns out to be the spark to something even bigger.

I’m intrigued by the premise of this series, and Escape was a great was to draw me in.  I can’t wait to read more to see how Logan and Cole’s relationship will develop from here, since saying there are obstacles in their way might be a bit of an understatement.  Escape was a solid 4-star read for me, and if your a fan of M/M shifter romance/romantic suspense, you’ll definitely want to check this story out.  This book is meant for readers 18+ for adult language and some sexual content.

One night can change everything…

Jesse Sykes has lived far longer than his youthful appearance suggests. Becoming a vampire after tragedy struck seemed the only option when his soul was shattered, after all he’s no stranger to having to hide what he is from the rest of the world. But eternal life isn’t without problems or heartache.

With a good job and great friends, Ian Moreton’s life would be almost perfect—if only he wasn’t in love with his best friend. His feelings are unrequited, and in an effort to move on, he takes a chance on a one-night stand with the handsome stranger he meets in a bar.

Jesse knows the risks of becoming attached to a human, but with neither of them looking for anything serious, where’s the harm? At least, that’s what Jesse thinks until his chemistry with Ian proves off the charts.

A second hook-up solidifies their connection…and brings Jesse to his senses. He scrambles to protect Ian from danger, but it’s already too late. With Ian unwittingly drawn into a world he knows nothing about, events are set in motion that will change both of their lives forever, and it’s up to Jesse to steer them safely through it.

Carra's Review

Paranormal romance in any way, shape, or form is my favorite genre, and since I was already a fan of this author’s Regents Park Pack series, I knew I was going to be reading Wounded Soul as soon as it came out.  Annabelle Jacobs doesn’t disappoint, creating a story that draws on classic vampire elements (superior strength and speed, can’t go out in sunlight, aversion to silver, etc.) while adding some unique touches like the VLCD (Vampire Liaison and Crime Division) for a new look.

While things between Ian and Jesse might have the feel of insta-love, it was relatively easy for me to overlook given this is a paranormal story—particularly since there are a few things within the lore that would contribute to a quicker development of feelings and attachment between the two of them.  Ian is an everyday guy, quick to believe in vampires (in a “hey, this is so cool yet terrifying” way) but there’s a reason behind that.  Jesse is in the class of “vampire with a conscience”…but not all of them are like that.  This does give him a very human aspect to his personality not just after the VLCD came into existence, but also before when there weren’t any real rules in place.

As for vampires that are not like Jesse?  Oh, let’s just take a look at his sire and ex, Peter.  I found him to be so despicable and his actions beyond reprehensible that I almost didn’t want to keep reading any part of the story in which he appeared.  I pushed myself past that barrier, and it’s a good thing I did since I would have missed out on a great story if I’d have stopped.   Doesn’t mean I was happy with him popping up whenever he did…but you know, that means the author did her job and did it well in crafting his character since it evoked such a visceral response from me.

But Jesse and Ian?  Loved them.  They more than made up for Peter.  Jesse’s coven leader, Raphael, and Jesse’s best friend Lys as well as Ian’s best friends Cate and Blake also went a long way in balancing out the darkness spread by Peter’s brand of crazy.

Wounded Soul fell somewhere between 4 and 4.5 stars for me (blame Peter for trying to pull things down, that’s how much I detested his character), and I think anyone who is a fan of M/M paranormal romance will enjoy this story.  This book is meant for readers 18+ for adult language, sexual content, and some descriptive violence (psycho vampire villain, ya know?).

Daryl plays with fire and gets burned by fate…

Former Primrose Pack member Jason Black happily accepted his role as beta in the new Regent’s Hill pack, knowing that merging the two was the best decision for everyone involved. Daryl Easton is loyal and honest but wary of change. The joining of the two packs wasn’t his preferred outcome, and he’s struggling to see all the newcomers as pack, including those now working alongside him.

When the alpha council proposes a two-week pack-building course to help improve troubled relationships, Jason and Daryl are sent along as backup. It soon becomes clear that the unit members and their betas won’t be the only ones taking part in tasks—Daryl and Jason will have challenges of their own to complete.

With the full moon adding to the rising tension, emotions are volatile, and tempers flare among the unit members. Jason and Daryl become closer than either of them expected, but with such opposing views on relationships, a messy outcome seems inevitable unless Daryl can let go of the past.

Carra's Review

I’ve been a fan of this series from the very start, so knowing this was the last book in it set my expectations pretty high.  I’ve enjoyed the interactions of the pack members, and the evolution from the Regent’s Park and Primrose packs being separate entities to them becoming a single pack—along with all the drama that went along with it.

The author continues here doing a good job of character presentation and development, HOWEVER…for me, this story had a similarity with the fourth book, Bitten By the Alpha, that was a frustration for me then, and was one again now.  I’m talking about Daryl’s steadfast insistence that he would not bond—with anyone—regardless of feelings on either side, regardless of the pain either would go through by denying a nascent bond, regardless of ANY reason…even when it’s pointed out to him his logic is beyond flawed.  I was solidly aligned with Jason throughout the story, and thought he showed great strength of character to accept Daryl’s decision even though Jason knew it would hurt them both.

Daryl’s constant denials—just like with Cam in book four—made it that much harder for me to feel that connection with him and Jason, and frustrated me to no end while reading.  And also like with book four, what held things together for me with this book was the entire pack’s overall story, and figuring out exactly where things would go wrong, and who would be the one to provoke the major drama.

While things do resolve in the end, and the action of the trials the pack faced during their bonding time kept my interest, Daryl’s ongoing irrational stance towards bonding with Jason affected things enough where my rating is hovering between 3.5 and 4 stars.  Things do still get steamy in this one, so this book is meant for readers 18+ for adult language and sexual content.

Review & Giveaway: OLD ACQUAINTANCE by Annabelle Jacobs

Blurb

There are two sides to every story, even those buried in the past.

When Sam spots the hot guy moving in next door, he’s all for going round to introduce himself. That soon changes when it turns out his new neighbour is in fact an old school acquaintance, Charles Whitmore. Sam didn’t like him back then, and fifteen years haven’t altered that.

Splitting up from his long-term boyfriend means a move across the city for Charlie. As luck would have it, his immediate neighbour is a guy he went to school with, Sam Gellar. While Sam is less than welcoming, his best mate is more than happy to invite Charlie into their social circle. Whatever problem Sam has with Charlie, Charlie resolves to get to the bottom of it, because, frosty beginnings aside, Charlie likes him.

With Christmas just around the corner, fate thrusts them together, and they get on so much better than they ever did at school. Despite his efforts not to, Sam develops feelings for Charlie, and they appear to be reciprocated. If Sam wants to take things further he needs to either confront Charlie about their past--a past Charlie seems to have forgotten entirely--or let it go and move on. Sam knows deep down that he can’t let it go, but it never seems the right time to bring it up. Until it is.

Carra's Review

Old Acquaintance has a touch of enemies to lovers…I say a touch since only Sam has this notion, and honestly he wavers about that pretty quickly once he and Charlie are around each other more.  This story is relatively low angst, and of the bit there is it actually resolves pretty quickly once brought to the surface.

Sam was basically a nice guy, though his old grudge against Charlie grew a little tiresome after a while.  Once that’s resolved, and a little later in the book when Sam is finally reassured of his place in Charlie’s life, I felt more at ease with his character.  Charlie is very sweet, he was definitely my favorite of the two.  Putting Sam’s whole grudge thing aside, everything else between them was great and they did fit well together.

Some other things I liked about this story: There are some good, solid secondary characters here, especially Sam’s best friend Dave.  There’s not really any major conflict in the book, which is exactly how I prefer holiday romances—less crazy and more cozy.  The epilogue made for a nice revisit to Sam and Charlie a year later, with a feel-good ending that made me smile.

Though you might feel a little put out with Sam’s mostly internalized grudge, Old Acquaintance is still a good holiday romance that deserves a slot in your library and was somewhere between 3.5 and 4 stars for me.  The physical intimacy is pretty light, but even so there’s enough along with the adult language to make this one for readers 18+.
