Blurb

Leo Byrne is a cop, Jason Banks is an ex-con. Even after one stolen kiss, something has to give before Leo can convince Jason that falling in love is even an option.

Adopted at a young age, Leo is part of the sprawling Byrnes family. With his dog Cap, three siblings and a whole mess of nieces and nephews, he is never lonely, and his life is full. Love is the last item on his to-do list, but seeing his best friends Sean and Eric happy and making new families makes him want things he doesn’t think is possible. Kissing Jason at an event to honor his bravery was one thing, but anything other than that is off limits. Until Jason has no one left to turn to, and it’s Leo who helps him at his lowest. Taking Jason and his daughter into his home is one thing, but falling for the ex-con is something else altogether.

Jason made a deal to keep his daughter safe and spent years behind bars as a result. Volunteering as a convict firefighter was as much about helping the community as saving his sanity, but now that he’s out, he doesn’t even have that. He’s lost his future, his self-respect, and has no friends or a place to call home. Worst of all, even after rescuing his daughter he still can’t keep her safe from the man who wants to use her as a bargaining chip for money. Meeting Leo might give Jason a way to keep Daisy safe, but falling for the stubborn cop means the truth has to be revealed, and he could lose everything all over again.

Carra's Review

From the moment Jason was introduced in Today, I already knew I wanted to know his story, and pairing him with Leo made this even more of a must-read.  After all, it’s cop plus ex-con, so there’s that built-in interest to see how that would work.  Well, with Jason and Leo it worked really well—complete with the requisite sweet moments thanks to Jason’s daughter Daisy.

That’s not to say there wasn’t any drama.  Jason’s situation is far from stable, and there are tense moments that keep a level of angst present through most of the story.  The close proximity, obvious attraction, and intense circumstances all contribute to a bit of an edge as you read.  Even when Daisy is involved, that doesn’t necessarily mean sweet and cute—there are still serious things going on to which even she is not immune.

Even given the attraction constantly simmering between the two men, things between them progress at a normal pace within the story.  If you’re expecting a lot of steamy page time, well that’s not what their tale is about.  This is more centered on the bond they form, and how Jason realizes it as it happens.

I will admit though that after the dramatic climax of the story, the quick jump to the epilogue was just a bit off for me.  While I did enjoy the wrap-up the epilogue provided with it’s look down the road time-wise for Leo and Jason, I would have rather had the events after that climax addressed as part of the main story.  Putting them as a look-back in the epilogue felt like too much like the author wanted to rush to the finish.

Even so, Promise was still a strong 4-star read for me, and really fits well into this series.  Now that our core three guys have their happy endings, I’m looking forward to moving on to other characters in this world since the series so far has been very satisfying.  Though there was not as much steam in this story, Promise is still meant for readers 18+ for adult language, some sexual content, and adult topics.
