Detective Fox and the Christmas Caper
by Isobel Starling
Genre: M/M romantic comedy, holiday romance

Blurb

Every good Dick needs a sidekick…
Actor Tom Lewis’s world came crashing down when a honey trap and tabloid expose outed him and put pay to his flourishing career. The housewives favorite was most well-known for his role as ‘Detective Fox’ in the quaint British series 'Malmesbury Murders'. But after the media speculation about his sexuality, the show is in hiatus and Tom hasn’t worked six months.
Now things are getting serious, money running out and Tom needs a job desperately. So when his agent offers him a seasonal acting job, he reluctantly agrees… and takes on the role of Santa for a top London department store.
This decision changes Tom’s luck.  When Tom overhears two unidentified store workers discussing a "job to get a little Christmas bonus”. He realizes the 'job' is of the illegal sort. Now, Tom could call the police, but then again, wouldn’t it be great for his flagging career if Detective Fox saved the day?
So Fox is on the case, and as every good Dick needs a sidekick, Tom decides a sexy young elf named Eli Mason will fit the role, in more ways than one.”

Carra's Review

Funny, sweet and hot…and filled with it’s own funky brand of Christmas cheer—that’s my quickie thought about Detective Fox and the Christmas Caper.  It’s the perfect book to put you in the mood for the season while giving you a bit of a mystery, plenty of laughs and a blossoming relationship between Tom and Eli that is hot and sexy with a touch of kink.

To be honest, I thought much of the concentration of the story was on the mystery that Tom and Eli were trying to solve.  Their relationship and the kinky chemistry between them?  That was like a yummy bonus ;-)  Now, the fact that Tom and Eli were trying to solve this on their own instead of turning their information over to the authorities?  That was a bit of a stretch for me, as I can’t see any law enforcement professionals condoning something like that in any way—so for me, I exercised my suspension of disbelief on this aspect of the story.

As for the rest?  It’s a fun trek and a crazy ride—after all, Tom, Eli and their friends aren’t real detectives, and the whole Winterwoods thing at Hamblings is a grandiose bit of kookiness (and yet I can see a major department store chain doing something exactly like this…), but even with that, the good guys still win in the end.  And the extra perk of Tom and Eli’s developing relationship-kinks and all?  That I think has sealed the deal to make this a yearly holiday re-read for me.

4 stars for Detective Fox and the Christmas Caper, and this will be most appreciated by M/M holiday romance fans who like that extra bit of kink in their stories.  Recommended only for readers 18+ due to adult language and M/M sexual content.

Synopsis

For Becket “Cat” Rowland, falling in love has never been easy. The summer he meets Micah Forbes, the intensity of his feelings brings back all the memories of eight years earlier.

Following a brutal attack that left him nearly dead, Cat is a mess inside and out. To cope with the trauma and with his view of himself that he’s nothing but an empty shell, he’s taken three vows: simplicity, chastity, and silence. His once colorful, trendy, and often feminine wardrobe has been replaced with jeans and t-shirts, and he’s sworn off men. He locks himself away from the world, using the memorized prayers of his childhood as his only speech.

Cat is lost to himself and everyone around him until another hospitalization introduces him to nurse David Simms. David takes Cat’s silence in stride, caring for him without pushing and slowly building Cat’s trust.

Outside the hospital, Cat discovers he has more in common with David than he knew, and they begin to build a friendship. As it slowly grows into love, David reveals his own need for someone to take him as he is. Cat begins to let go of his vows one by one, only holding onto the silence.

Despite how far he’s come, Cat’s increasingly severe panic attacks threaten to undo everything David has helped him build. Cat’s only hope is to break the final vow and tell the truth about the night of his attack. When David fails to keep a promise he made to be there for him, Cat has to stand on his own and prove to himself he’s strong enough to survive.

Carra's Review

Talk about putting yourself through the wringer while reading a story...

Heavy on angst, pain, loss and drama, Walking By Faith was a highly emotional tale that tells Cat's story from his point of view.  It puts us in his shoes as he goes from his self-assured, exuberant self to a shell of who he once was-calling his identity and self into question following a horrific physical attack that is made unimaginably worse due to Cat's existing medical conditions.  The author tells Cat's story so well that you can clearly empathize with his pain, suffering and loss of self-making his journey back all the more uplifting and emotionally moving.

The story goes back and forth across an approximately eight year gap, showing us what happened in his past to thoroughly break Cat's mind, body and spirit, and also how he heals with the help of David...and then in the more recent times, gives us a glimpse into his relationship with Micah.  Some books that bounce back and forth in time can be confusing or leave me irritated, but that didn't happen here-the jumps in time were not over-used, and it was very clear what was happening and when.

Cat is an amazing character.  I wanted to carefully wrap him up in my arms to keep him safe, but also loved how his fiery attitude would come back, showing everyone around him that he is still capable and needs to heal on his own terms.  Now I do want to confess-I am not religious at all...as in absolutely zero.  So Cat's reliance on his religion and faith is to me personally not easily understandable, though it is obvious from reading that it brings him comfort and a semblance of control when things are getting emotionally out of hand for him.  When I was first reading this story and the religious elements were coming in to play, I was worried that it would turn me off from the book...but the story and characters are so strong, it turned out not to be a problem for me.

I also need to tell you how much I adored David.  He is completely understanding of Cat's situation and Cat's need to adhere to his vows following the attack.  He never pushes Cat, and goes at whatever pace Cat wants to set.  David has his own health issues, and is in a unique position to comprehend Cat's limitations.  He is a perfect match for Cat, and in the end I did wind up needing some tissues for how things turned out.  We don't get to see much of Micah in this story comparatively speaking, so I'm looking forward to reading his story in Passing on Faith.

I'm so glad I  read Walking by Faith, it was a 4.5-star read for me and I'd highly recommend it to fans of gay fiction/romance who can appreciate genderqueer characters in the stories they read.  This story is meant for readers 18+ for adult language, a scene of violence that might be a trigger for some readers, and M/M sexual content.

How tangled can a romantic web get?

When gruff mountaineer Dominic Hartington-George seeks sponsorship for his latest expedition, his London PA insists on a more media-friendly profile - like dating celebrity supermodel Zeb Z.

Zen can't make the date, so he asks his identical twin, Aidan, to stand in for just one evening. Aidan, a struggling playwright, shuns the limelight to the extent people don't even know Zeb has a sibling, but he reluctantly agrees.

When the deception has to continue beyond the first date, Aidan fights to keep up the pretense. Dominic likes his sassy, intelligent companion, and Aidan starts falling for the forthright explorer. But how long can Aidan's conscience cope as confusion abounds? Will coming clean as "the other twin" destroy the trust they've built?

Excerpt

The pretty young woman who met Aidan at the door smiled warmly. “I’m Tanya, Mr. Hartington-George’s personal assistant. I’m pleased to meet you, Mr. Z. I’m quite a fan.”

“Zeb,” Aidan said, hoping he hadn’t hesitated for too long. “Please just call me Zeb. And… yes. Thanks.”

“Come on through.” She gestured him into the hallway. “You’re on time.”

Aidan wondered why she sounded surprised at that. He repitched his natural voice a little higher to Zeb’s teasing tone and smiled brightly in return. “Of course.”
A sneaked look in the hallway mirror had him rolling his eyes. Mission accomplished, Zeb! He barely recognized himself. Usually he was most comfortable in a sweatshirt and jeans, but now he was dressed in what Zeb Z would wear on a daily basis: a pair of skintight, distressed-denim jeans with inexplicable splits across the knees; high-top boots in soft purple leather that screamed expensive yet were surprisingly comfortable; and two lightweight T-shirts under an off-the-shoulder, electric blue sweater. Admittedly the blue brought out the color of his eyes—no one ever said Zeb didn’t have a well-developed sense of personal style—but the rest of it made him look like an overaged member of a boy band.

A younger man darted out from what must have been the living room, clutching a leather jacket to his chest as if in protection. He saw Aidan, glanced at Tanya with widening eyes, then back at Aidan. Then he thrust out his hand and said perfectly cheerily, “I’m Eric. He threatens to kill me on a daily basis.”

Aidan just shook hands and nodded. He had no idea what to say to that, or even what it meant.

Tanya frowned at Eric. “Whatever. We’re just going. The car will come for you at seven. In the meantime, if you’d like a drink?”

But Eric took her arm and guided her toward the front door. “They can cope with that themselves, Tanya. Come on.”

And Aidan was left on his own in the hallway.

He took a deep breath to center himself. The house wasn’t huge, but it was in a very fashionable area of Ladbroke Grove and far more luxurious than his own small flat. That said, there wasn’t much furniture and the decoration wasn’t modern. The hallway walls were painted in plain, cool colors. No pictures hung on the walls, and there was only a single bureau and hat stand, albeit in quality wood. Eric had left the living room door ajar behind him, and Aidan took a quick peek inside before announcing himself. From what he could see, again the walls were plain and the furniture sparse. It was as if the owner was in the process of moving out—or had never really settled in.

A male figure paused in front of the half-open door. He was distracted by something on the other side of the room, so Aidan got a first secret glimpse of the man he’d been told so much about.

H-G.

He was much more handsome in real life than on TV, though in most of the documentaries, H-G was wrapped up in furry parkas or oilskins with his face more than half-hidden with a scarf and balaclava. Today he was wearing a very smart pair of dark trousers, a startlingly white dress shirt—which had to be brand-new to still have that sheen—and a well-cut suit jacket that settled comfortably across an impressive set of shoulders. H-G’s hair was a fabulous thatch of dark curls, and he had a dark beard and mustache to match. Guiltily Aidan recalled Zeb’s mischievous nickname: Hairy Guy. But that conjured up a Wild Man of Borneo kind of image, and H-G was far from that. The hair was naturally unruly but had been styled to a level just off his shoulders, and the beard was well trimmed.

Aidan had never been attracted to hairy bears, not that he’d ever had much of a choice. As Zeb had gleefully pointed out more than once, Aidan seemed to attract needy and spiteful wankers who got off on bleeding him dry of any compassion and care. Oh, and his money too.

Okay. Self-pity over, right now. I’m not Loser Aidan now. I’m the charismatic and disgustingly fascinating Zeb Z.

For the first time in this bizarre performance, Aidan felt the tickle of mischief. This just might be fun after all. He pushed the door fully open, walked into the room, and cleared his throat.

H-G turned slowly around to face Aidan fully. His gaze ranged over Aidan’s body, and his eyes widened. “Well. They didn’t lie.”

“Who didn’t? What about?”

H-G raised his eyebrows. “Well, firstly, they said you were a bit feisty.”

Feisty? Aidan hadn’t heard that word outside of romance-novel blurbs.

“And you wouldn’t be fazed by… you know.”

“No, I don’t know. By what?” Aidan bit his lip to stop a laugh escaping.

“My celebrity.”

Jesus. Zeb was right. The man was one big blob of arrogance. “No,” Aidan said coolly. “I’m not.”

“That’s from working in the business, I suppose.”

“Business?” Oh, right, he was meant to be Zeb. “Yes, of course. When you’ve seen so many guys without the spray tan and makeup,” he gabbled without thinking first, “you soon realize they’ve got the same equipment under it all.”

H-G blinked twice, hard. And then he laughed—a loud, bold sound, echoing warmly in the bleak room.

Aidan wanted to laugh with him, but maintained his cool stare. “What’s so funny?” Had he blown it already? He hadn’t even left the house with the man yet.

“They didn’t tell me you were witty, Zeb. I may call you Zeb?”

Why? “Oh yes, right. Of course.”

Dom’s language was quaintly old-fashioned, but Aidan found it rather charming, especially after the theatrical bickering of the Dreamweavers and his brother’s exuberant and affected chatter.

“And secondly?” Aidan prompted.

“I’m sorry?” H-G frowned at him.

God, what a scowl he has. “You said they didn’t lie, and then you gave the first reason.”

H-G raised his eyebrows. “You have a good memory.”

Yes, he does have lovely eyes. “Yes, I do. Especially when I’m listening.”

H-G’s mouth twisted as if he were trying not to smirk. “Secondly, they didn’t lie about your looks, and that you were even better-looking in real life. I concur. You’re bloody gorgeous.”

Andrew laughed as he scraped the last of the tiramisu and munched his final bite of cookie.

“I should have gotten two pieces.”

“Have mercy. I’d never get out of the gym.” He set the plate on the table. “Thank you. That was really good.”

“So what would you like to do with the rest of your night off?”

Fluorescent pink rushed across Andrew’s cheeks like someone raised a flag.

Val smiled. “First, I guess I should ask you if you’re gay.”

“Do you think I am?” He stared at his hands. Beautiful hands with long fingers and narrow palms.

“Yes.”

He looked up. “Oh? Why?”

“I think you like me. More and differently than most straight men would.”

“Maybe I just like ballet.” He flashed that half smile again.

“Beethoven didn’t write any ballets.”

“What?”

“The music you played in your car was symphonic, not balletic. Plus, you don’t know sh*t about ballet.”

Andrew snorted. “True.”

“So you just like me.”

“Also true.”

“Do you want to have sex?”

“I think so.”

“What would make you know so?”

Those pale eyes flashed up and met Val’s. “Do you top or bottom?”

“Is this a test?”

Andrew didn’t reply, but those green eyes didn’t waver.

“I’ve done both.”

He still didn’t answer.

“I’m a bottom.”

“Is that one of the reasons you’re careful about what you eat?”

“Yes.”

A slow, satisfied grin spread across his face.

“Have we arrived at ‘know so’?” He laughed.

“F*ck yeah.” With one long-fingered hand, Andrew Preston, boy blusher and stick-up-the-ass organizational freak, grabbed Val behind the neck, pulled him in tight and consumed his mouth with lips so hot they should have been licensed by the NYFD.
