Ella and Kayden’s story continues in
Demand by Lisa Renee Jones

Where’s Ella?  Find out TODAY!

Blurb
Still struggling with amnesia, Ella questions everything she’s known about Kayden Wilkens—the alluring stranger who claims to have found her unconscious in an alleyway a month earlier. But was he truly a stranger—or did Kayden know her before his supposed rescue? Tormented by the potential betrayal he denies, with fleeting memories of a bombshell in her recent past, Ella must face a hard reality. Every action has consequences . . . and trusting Kayden, the one thing she most desires, might result in the direst consequences of all.

Excerpt
Crossing behind the couch toward the kitchen, I find myself remembering those naked, intimate moments with Kayden only a short time ago. The passion. The trust I’d felt for him. And then his words: “We both want more. Until we don’t.” The words send a surge of adrenaline and nerves through my body.
The scent of freshly brewed coffee teases my nostrils as I reach the kitchen, where I immediately find Kayden standing behind the island. But it’s not him that makes my heart lurch, as usual. It’s my gun that’s lying on the counter between us.
And when I should perhaps step backward I find myself charging forward to claim the other side of the counter.
“What is that for?”
“You thought you needed it earlier,” he says. “I want you to have it now.”
My fingers curl on the tiled counter. “Do I need it?”
“That’s for you to decide.”
“That isn’t the answer I want.”
His jaw sets hard. “If you’re expecting an answer you’ll want, you’d better pick up that gun.”
We stare at each other, a push and pull between us that has nothing to do with fear or intimidation, and everything to do with a bond we both know is being tested. “I know what you’re doing.”
“What am I doing?”
“The same thing you did outside that church, when you helped me hold the gun to your chest.”
“Which is what?”
“Offering me the façade of control.”
“You holding a loaded gun on me in no way equals a façade.”
“I know you now,” I counter. “You don’t give up control, even when you say you are.”
He rests his hands on the counter, one turned just enough for me to catch a glimpse of the hawk inked on his wrist, its wings spread, the mark of a man whose rules of many must dictate his actions. “There are two sides to this coin,” he says, his words drawing my attention, his pale blue eyes piercing mine. “The me with you, and the me with everyone else.”
“We barely knew each other at the church.”
“I’d already decided you were mine. You just didn’t know it yet.”

Carra's Review

I started off reading Lisa Renee Jones' Inside Out series, and I was very happy when she continued Ella's storyline in this spinoff series (Careless Whispers).  The first book, Denial, was a great start to the spinoff and after the cliffhanger there, I couldn't wait to pick up Demand to see where things led.  For me, Demand was more about the suspense, drama, mystery and intrigue of The Underground and everything between it and the different mafia families and other ties.

While there's a good dose of steamy scenes between Ella and Kayden, to me it felt like the romance parts took a backseat to the rest of the story in this installment.  That's not a bad thing--diving further into the mystery means getting pulled further and further in to the series, and of course by now I'm to the point where I can't not finish and find out all the answers.

The answers?  Well, you'll get some in Demand, but of course other questions are raised, and by the end you'll be left desperately craving the third book, Surrender.  I know I am.  Demand gets 4 solid stars from me, and if you're already a fans of the series, I think you'll be pretty darn happy with this book.  Recommended for readers 18+ for adult language and sexual content.

Blurb

Blair Clark has reached his breaking point. Forced to leave one job because of sexual harassment, he’s having difficulty finding another. Since no one believes what happened, Blair’s left with a stain on his employment record that he can’t get rid of. He’s had to move back home with his mother. As if that’s not bad enough, he realizes his crush, Travis, is simply using him. His romantic life looks as hopeless as his job search.

Jack Ross is sure he’ll never find anyone who’ll love him for who he is. All anyone sees is the port-wine stain on his left cheek—not the man behind it. Even his mother thinks he should get rid of it. But the procedure is difficult and painful.

When Blair applies for a secretarial position with Jack’s firm, both men learn that beauty is, indeed, in the eye of the beholder. It’ll take a lot of trust to chase away their insecurities, but if they take a chance on one another, love will find a way.

Excerpt
From Chapter One
“Can’t I?” I gazed into Travis’s brown eyes, the same eyes I dreamed about at night. In those dreams they were filled with love, but when I looked now, I only saw cruelty, arrogance, and something more, something darker I didn’t want to think about.
“No.” Travis snatched my chin, held it tightly between his big fingers and forced me to keep perfectly still. “No, you can’t. Choose a manly job and they’ll stop. Keep flaunting your sexuality and that’s what they’ll do.”
“Flaunting my sexuality? What’s that got to do with my job?”
“You’re a secretary, for f*ck’s sake. It’s a woman’s job. Now stop adding fuel to the fire and cowboy up.” Travis’s voice remained low but it held an angry edge to it, one I recognized well.
I dropped my gaze, and a moment later Travis let go of my chin. Breathing out a sigh of relief, I winced when another guy asked, “Having trouble keeping the fairy in line?”
“Are you kidding?” Travis replied, puffing up his chest.
Enough was enough. I bolted up, ready to leave, when a big hand clamped on my arm. I tugged, but the grip tightened. Anxiety blossomed into fear, especially when the table dropped into sudden silence.
“Where do you think you’re going?” Travis hissed.
My tongue stuck to the roof of my mouth, making it impossible for me to answer. What the hell was wrong with me? Why had I pursued Travis for so many months? Just because of his looks? Sure, he was hot, and exactly how I liked my men—big, fair-haired, and brown-eyed. But there was no love lost between us. Travis would never come out as gay, even though he liked to fool around with me whenever it was convenient for him.
“Blair, sit your ass down again, you’re attracting attention.”
When Travis pulled at my arm with more force, I planted my feet. I didn’t anticipate Travis letting go all of a sudden, leaving me to stumble backward. I crashed into someone behind me, taking us both to the ground.
Rolling to my knees and away from whomever I’d thrown, I apologized, “I’m so sorry. Did I hurt you?”
Heat flooded my cheeks as embarrassment swept over me. Holding out a hand for the guy I’d tripped, I recoiled when the man sat up, revealing his face. A gasp tumbled over my lips and I stared openmouthed. The skin of the man’s left side was stained in red, giving him a slightly scary appearance, as if he’d been badly burnt.
“I’m fine,” the man said, his brows creasing in a frown. Obviously he’d seen my reaction and wasn’t too thrilled about it.
I couldn’t help but stare even more. The man’s dark blue eyes bore right into me, daring me to say anything. The stained skin drew my attention, no matter how hard I tried to look elsewhere. It looked so painful, a large blotch of red that started below the man’s eye, covered his whole cheek, and tapered out at his jawline.
“It’s not contagious, if that’s what you’re afraid of,” the man said in an icy tone. He rose in one fluid motion, holding out his hand for me to… to what? Help me up? Why would he do that?
I eyed the outstretched hand, hating myself for the fear coursing through me. Just when I was about to take the man up on the offer, two big hands grabbed my waist and hoisted me to my feet.

Carra's Review

This is the first book I've read by this author, and I thought it was a great introduction to her work.  Stained is a quick read and a mostly light contemporary M/M romance that made me smile while at the same time it helped spread an important message of acceptance.

I really liked the main characters in this story.  Blair is sweet and gentle, and you can't imagine anyone ever wanting to hurt such a wonderful, kind man.  Unfortunately, he keeps ending up with the wrong guys...and his current sort-of guy, Travis, is a supreme jerk who I just wanted to throttle.  Jack is a man who is successful, strong and supportive, and he's used to others looking down on him for how he looks-though he doesn't worry what they think.

Most of the drama in the story comes from Travis who causes all sorts of issues, and I was so glad to see Blair standing up for himself to Travis.  In the short time that it takes to read this story, we still get to see Blair grow and become more self-assured.  The romance that evolves between Blair and Jack doesn't quite click for me, it felt more like it was convenient than a "meant to be" type relationship between the two of them.  But they are still sweet together, and overall their coupling worked for me.

Stained was a 4-star read for me, and was a really nice way to spend a couple of hours reading.  It helps send a message of acceptance regardless of how someone looks (Jack), or things that you might hear about them (Blair), and shows that WHO a person is inside is really what is most important.  I'd recommend Stained to M/M romance fans 18+ for adult language and M/M sexual content.

Spotlight: CLINGSTONE by Marti Ziegler

Synopsis

What if you were counted among hundreds of civilians wrongly charged with treason?

Creighton Branagan is one of the few men still residing in the mill village of Roswell, Georgia, at the closing stages of the American Civil War. His deafness excludes him from military service and condemns him as an outcast.

Mae Parrish’s dissatisfaction extends to a life of too much work and too little joy. She forms a wary alliance with Creighton when they are included among hundreds of southern textile workers arrested for treason and deported to northern prisons under

Federal guard. Their crime: manufacturing Confederate uniforms.

Clingstone chronicles their arduous journey by wagon and train, followed by an emotional internment rife with privations and disease. It is during the course of these hardships that their resilience is repeatedly tested, and their pact of survival deepens into a steadfast love that withstands even the deepest self-inflicted wounds of war.

About the Author

I live in a small town in central Illinois surrounded by cornfields and wind turbines. My career working with children diagnosed with extreme behavioral disorders has taught me the importance of balancing work with leisure time. I love to decompress after a long week by reading a book in the hammock beneath my crabapple tree. Writing has always been an interest of mine, and Clingstone is my first venture into the world of self-publishing. My other creative pursuits include gardening and landscape design, photography, and uncompleted DIY projects that keep multiplying. I enjoy riding my bike and kayaking, and I’ve been known to take along my dogs Annie and Pearl when I’m feeling particularly daring and want to threaten life and limb. I own a Coca-Cola memorabilia collection that is slowly consuming my kitchen and dining room; my favorite piece is a vintage pedal car from the 1960s. I’m a tropical fish hobbyist and also have a small aboveground pond (another DIY project!) filled with fat goldfish that are amazingly friendly.

Rhenna Morgan writes for the same reason she reads—to escape reality.
Yes, her life rocks—two beautiful little girls, a great husband, a steady job, and the kind of friends that would take you out back if you hurt her. But, like most women, she’s got obligations stacked tight from dusk to dawn. So, when the world gets her down, she slips into something…less realistic.
Romance is a must. So is a steamy romp (or four). Nothing thrills her more than the fantasy of new, exciting worlds, strong, intuitive men, and the sigh of, “Oh if only that could happen to me.”
So, if you’re picking up one of her books, expect portals into alternate realms and men who’ll fight to keep the women they want. Romantic escape for the women who need it.
