Excerpt

Austin’s heart did a sideways flip when Cal stopped next to him, his broad shoulders as intimidating as the Rockies to anyone who didn’t know him.

“Welcome back,” Cal said in a slow drawl that dragged along Austin’s senses. “How was Montana?”

“Beats me,” Austin said with a grin, keeping his eyes on the image on his camera’s display. “But Kootenai National Forest was gorgeous. You should see some of the shots I got. The night sky there is spectacular.”

“Doesn’t it look the same as everywhere else?”

Austin gave him the stink eye. “Don’t sass me, Calvin.”

Cal didn’t smile—his smiles were as rare as a sighting of Halley’s Comet—but his lips twitched.

“And no, it doesn’t look the same everywhere.”

“If you say so.” Cal looked off to the right. “What’s with the second camera?”

Austin jerked his gaze to where he’d set up an additional tripod several feet away. “That one’s recording so I can make a time-lapse video.”

Cal grunted.

His presence was nonintrusive as the sun sank and the stars began to emerge, yet Austin was always aware of him. He was as aware of Cal as he was of the location of the moon or the image in his camera’s viewfinder.

A few minutes later, shadows bathing the landscape, Austin began packing up his equipment under a sky quickly turning to dusk. The mountains had turned nearly invisible—when it got dark out here, it got dark—and Cal was almost a silhouette against the sky. Something about him standing silently with his hands shoved in the pockets of his jeans, gazing out into the distance, screamed of both contentment and loneliness, making Austin’s heart clench.

The first memory Austin had of Cal at Windsor Ranch was of him falling into a puddle near the corral on a rainy summer day when they’d been seven or eight. Now, as the foreman of that same ranch, Cal was basically running the place. The juxtaposition between kid-Cal, covered in rain and mud as he’d blinked up at Austin with big gray eyes as though wondering how he’d fallen into the puddle, and adult-Cal, tall, strong, coolly confident, and carrying the weight of the entire ranch on his shoulders, was sometimes jarring in that strange twist-of-fate kind of way.

Austin brought the camera up to his eyes, adjusted the settings, and snapped a photo, framing Cal in the right third of the shot while he gazed off to the left, making the viewer wonder what he was looking at. Austin would call it Cowboy Against the Night. He might even put it up for sale in his gallery instead of keeping it for himself.

Maybe.

Cal must’ve heard the shutter, because he turned with a raised eyebrow.

“Smile,” Austin said, aiming his camera at him again.

Cal did the exact opposite, making Austin laugh as he took the picture anyway.

Carra's Review

I don’t read too many cowboy/western-type romances, but I have to say that this was a great one that I picked up this time around.  I’ve really enjoyed this author’s other stories (in particular the hockey romances), so I’m glad to find their storytelling talent continues to extend to other tropes.  Here in Road to a Cowboy, we get a wonderful slow-burn best friends to lovers tale that is relatively low angst and is primarily character driven.

Austin and Cal fit together perfectly—once they can get past a bit of a rocky start.  They are one of those couples where you use a familiar pairing to describe them…like “they go together like peanut butter and jelly”.

Cal had a less than ideal upbringing with a mother who was cold and detached, which continues to this day and is really the primary source of angst in the story.  Austin’s family life was quite the opposite, and something Cal was lucky to share with him in his later teen years.

This story moves at a mostly sedate pace, but I didn’t feel like it was too slow at all.  I was glad of the lower angst level, as it allowed the book to concentrate more on the characters and their feelings, and how they dealt with them.

Overall, this was a solid 4-star read for me, and is a story I’d recommend to any M/M romance fan.  It is written well and has truly likable characters (well, minus Cal’s mother), and I loved Cal and Austin together.  While it is the second book in the series, it can definitely be read as a standalone.  It is meant for readers 18+ for adult language and sexual content.

Length: 69,000 words

Duncan McLeish owns a ranch. Unlike most ranches, this one is in the Scottish Highlands. Having inherited a failing farm from his grandfather, he turns it into a successful business. He has friends and he loves his home, but he's lonely, and not even infrequent trips to Glasgow and Edinburgh slake that thirst to find someone. Then Drew Sinclair walks into his life.

Drew Sinclair is tantalizingly close to getting his clothing brand noticed in the industry. He and his business partner, Joy, create individual dresses, while, on the side, Drew produces a line of men's lingerie. He visits Scotland to design a bridal gown for his sister, Jenna, who is marrying Duncan's best friend at Christmas.

Duncan and Drew have nothing except their Highland upbringing in common, but they say opposites attract, and the attraction is immediate. Is this simply a summer fling, or can two men who live such opposite lives miles away from each other find a way to love?

Carra's Review

My Highland Cowboy is one of those stories that’s just right, with the perfect balance of…well, just about everything.  Wonderful setting, characters I adored and in whom I became invested, just the right amount of angst, and some hot and sexy intimate scenes thrown in for good measure.  This is definite re-read material, and though this is the first book I’ve read by this author, I’m now adding a whole bunch more of her books to my TBR list!

Books set in the Scottish Highlands are some of my favorites as I love the setting—beautiful and refreshing, and of course so very romantic.  Now drop a very American-style dude ranch in the middle of that with honest-to-goodness cowboys and you really have my attention.  Duncan turns out to be a classic cowboy, with the added allure of his Scottish background, and he is such a sweet, kind man.  To think that he’s up there with little chance of finding that one special person to spend his life with immediately put me in an “oh, Duncan” state of mind where I wouldn’t be satisfied unless he wound up with his happy ever after ending.  While he doesn’t flaunt his sexuality, he isn’t really in the closet either—he just lives his life, mostly content.

Enter Drew, fashion designer, city-dweller, out-and-proud and very secure with who he is…and with no plans to spend any time up in those gorgeous highlands other than to take care of dresses for his sister’s wedding.  Though he’s a city guy, he’s no stranger to Highland life—but that doesn’t mean he wants to go back to it, even if it would include having Duncan all the time.  The two of them fall quickly for each other, but to be honest it didn’t feel at all like insta-love as I was reading.  The angst comes from the fact that they each have their own separate lives—hundreds of miles apart from each other—something that neither see a way around, no matter how much they want to be together.

As I mentioned previously, this story really does have a perfect balance.  It is very well written with a good hook to keep your attention, and the chemistry between Duncan and Drew is quite obvious and definitely sizzling.  I felt their emotional pain as they tried to work through not being together, and could feel their want when they were apart.  To me it was evident who would need to be the one to make some concessions, it was just the “how” of it that needed to be sorted out.  Getting to that point while feeling their love as well as their aching from being apart was what kept me riveted to the pages.

My Highland Cowboy was a lovely 4.5-star read for me, and I do highly recommend it to all M/M romance fans.  If you’re a fan of the Scottish Highlands or cowboys, you’re going to love it even more.  This book is meant for readers 18+ for adult language and M/M sexual content.

Cowboys Don't Ride Unicorns

(Cowboys Don't Series, #2)

Blurb

Cowboy Danny Boone—a name he made up one drunken night and has regretted ever since—harbors a big past and yearns for a small future. A short, bright career as a champion bull rider almost ended in his death when his homophobic father discovered Danny was gay. Now Danny longs for a plot of land he can build a ranch house on and enough money to make up for some of the education he missed.

Danny also hides a preference for beautiful femmes who like to top—a combo rarer than a unicorn. Then onto the guest ranch where Danny works drives San Francisco decorator Laurie Belmont, a young man so gorgeous he makes horses gasp, and so ballsy he almost kills Danny’s attacker.

Laurie’s trying to find his way out from under the thumb of a domineering mother, helpless father, and rich, privileged boyfriend. But no matter the attraction, their lives are worlds apart, and cowboys don’t ride unicorns.

“I want to see what’s ahead.” He coaxed Tramp into a trot and then a canter, and before Danny could even register it, he was in a full-on gallop.

“Sh*t!” Danny glanced at Grove, who looked worried. Danny frowned. “Should I go after him? He’s pretty sure in the saddle, but he doesn’t know the area.”

“Yes, please. He’s pissed, and he’s got a wicked temper. Plus he’s fond of biting off more than he can chew.”

Danny scrubbed the accompanying image of Laurie’s biting and chewing from his brain and took off after him at speed. Danny rode Star Gazer, a beautiful black Arabian who had lots of speed on Tramp, but Laurie had a head start.

Danny galloped down the path, looking for signs of Tramp ahead. Finally he saw the flick of her tail rounding a corner, and he turned Star Gazer into the rough and ran catty-corner to intercept Laurie. When Danny came up beside Tramp, Laurie rode easily, grinning and obviously having way too much fun. Danny waved him down. “Stop, damn it.”

Laurie gave him a pouty look but slowed Tramp to a trot. “What’s wrong?”

“Just stop.”

Laurie frowned and pulled up Tramp.

Danny waved a hand to the right. “There’s a little stream over there. Let her get a drink.” He walked Star Gazer through the trees to the trickle of water, so precious in drought-ridden California.

Laurie dismounted and dropped his reins, letting Tramp get her own water.

Danny did the same, and as Star Gazer walked to the stream, Danny turned on Laurie. “First, you don’t know this area. Going that fast, you could have hit barbed wire, or for that matter, the highway that comes up fast in a half mile. Second, Tramp isn’t an Arabian. Yes, she’s got some speed, but she’s older and not bred to gallop for that long.”

“I asked to ride the Palomino.” He crossed his arms.

“And you may get to if it’s okay with Rand, but you’ve got to respect the horses, and making them pay for your temper isn’t the way to do it.”

Laurie’s eyes widened a bit; then he stared at his boots. “Tramp seems more than willing to run.”

Danny stepped closer. “A quality of horses you should be aware of is that they don’t always act in their own best interests. The same can be said for some humans.” Breathe. “You shouldn’t be riding alone. Period.”

Laurie stepped closer and thrust his pretty face toward Danny. “Okay, simple. You can ride with me.”

“I’ve got work to do.”

“News flash.” Laurie took another step. “I am your work.”

One more step and they’d be nose-to-nose—or lips-to-lips. Danny stared at that mouth like it held the secrets of the universe. What would those lips taste like? Big cowboy in the sky, help me.

Carra's Review

You might think from Laurie's description that he's an over-the-top flamboyant type, but really he's not.  Yes, he may sport the accoutrements like the makeup and the lacy nightwear and such, but he honestly doesn't flaunt it.  I liked Laurie, though I did think he went way too long letting others run his life, trying to make everyone else happy.

I'm a huge fan of Danny, hot cowboy with a hard, damaged, mostly hidden past.  I admired his determination, and the respect he showed others.  I liked the matchup of him and Laurie, though getting the two of them together was sometimes an exercise in frustration, and honestly I didn't feel an emotional connection between them.

I will admit, I thought this book didn't flow quite as well as the first book in the series did, and at times this one did feel unfocused.  I was also not at all a fan of Laurie's actions with Danny while Laurie was still with Grove.  These things were mostly balanced out for me by Danny's story involving someone from his past and how that all played out.

I think the first book spoiled me a bit with Kai and Rand's story (I was very happy to see them both again in this book!), making it hard for Danny and Laurie's story to compare, but in the end I was pleased with how things worked out.

Recommended for M/M romance fans who are 18+ only due to adult language and explicit M/M sexual content.
