Who We Were...
Two awkward teenagers - the loner and the nerd, trying to find our place in the world. Paired in wood shop, we knew nothing of each other, except that we wanted to know everything. Then one life altering moment changed it all and we were left with shattered dreams and broken hearts.

Who We Are...
Two grown men - braver and smarter than we used to be, trying to heal the damage from that irrevocable moment. Even though the past was behind us, dead and buried long ago, we found it impossible to move on without ripping open the scars of our deep wounds.

With twelve years of unanswered questions fueling our desperate need for the truth, we must figure out if who we were will destroy who we are.

Carra's Review

One thing this author does really well is present characters that have depth and can trigger an emotional response for me, either positive or negative.  This time around with Who We Were is no different when it came to character depth for both Ryan and Quinn, though this time around my responses included irritation.  The angst level was also pretty high through most of the story which for me became a bit frustrating after a while.

I liked the setup during the first part of the story when they were in high school, and that they were able to form a friendship first.  I was disturbed by the relationship between Ryan and his family with the discrepancy of treatment between him and his brother being so glaringly obvious, and the outright bullying from his brother.  The first part gives readers a kind of in-story mini cliffhanger since we don’t know the real reason behind Ryan leaving.

It was gratifying to see how successful both Ryan and Quinn became as adults in their careers.  But it was as adults where my frustration and irritation started to really seep in since though we’re told he and his family have worked through things to a point it didn’t lower the angst level at all, plus Ryan reverts to running away again after an encounter with his brother and then Quinn…a scene that is too reminiscent of what happened the first time Ryan left.

This is the first time I’ve read a book from this author that had a disjointed feel to it; to add to that, once the big reason behind Ryan’s behavior is revealed (after much to-do and blustering about it), it felt like much ado about…well, not nothing but definitely not as dire as it was made to seem.  The fact that he didn’t want to share the information with Quinn left lingering doubts considering his apparent feelings for Quinn.

The epilogue was an angst-free zone, and does show how happy Ryan and Quinn are in the end, though for me it didn’t quite balance out the overwhelmingly high angst level of the rest of the story and the levels of irritation and frustration that had built up during the rest of the book.

Who We Were is getting 3.5 stars from me, it’s one of those stories that had me sitting on the fence for the majority of the read and feeling not quite whole once I was done reading (I really can’t elaborate more without spoilers).  It’s definitely for readers 18+ for adult language and sexual content.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Melissa Collins has always been a book worm. Studying Literature in college ensured that her nose was always stuck in a book. She followed her passion for reading to the most logical career choice: English teacher. Her hope was to share her passion for reading and the escapism of books to her students. Having spent more than a decade in front of a classroom, she can easily say that it’s been a dream.

Her passion for writing didn’t start until more recently. When she was home on maternity leave in early 2012, she read her first romance novel and her head filled with the passion, angst and laughter of the characters who she read about it. It wasn’t long before characters of her own took shape in her mind. Their lives took over Melissa’s brain and The Love Series was born.

New Release-Review: AS I AM by Melissa Collins

As I Am by Melissa Collins is LIVE!
Grab your copy:

Chase Hansen. Broke. College drop out. Male stripper.

My life wasn't at all what I imagined it would be. I should have been finishing up college, interning with a well-respected business, partying with my friends. But instead, I was raising my seventeen year old brother, struggling to make ends meet. Love wasn't even on my radar. Besides, what did I have to offer? A few crumpled singles pulled from my G-string? Defeated and exhausted, I knew I had zero chance of finding someone to love me just as I am.

Noah Carpenter. Angry. Betrayed. Doctor.

Just when I thought my life was going exactly as it should, everything turned upside down. With my final rotation in medical school complete, I finally achieved my lifelong dream of becoming a doctor. What I never expected was to catch the man of my dreams in our bed with the man of his. Beyond infuriated, I struggled to piece together the remnants of my life. Just when I'd decided to give up on love altogether, I found a man who loved me just as I am.

Carra's Review

The setup for Chase’s situation is a familiar one—young college student on track for a better life suddenly getting thrust into the role of parent, giving up their own dreams (even if temporarily) to take care of a sibling instead.  And Chase fully embraces his role, doing what he has to so he can make ends meet and support his younger brother…he’s the classic selfless, hard-working guy who’s been dealt a crappy hand.

Noah’s situation is also all too familiar—finding his lover in their bed with someone else…made all the more complicated by his lover (well, ex-lover now) being the brother of his best friend’s new husband.

It’s how the author puts these two men together, with the requisite off-the-charts chemistry, that makes As I Am another great read in Ms. Collins’s lineup.  There’s the just-right blend of angst, family drama, ex-drama, and navigating a new relationship when you’re not expecting one.  I thought this story was actually pretty low on the angst scale, with minimal actual conflict.  It was more about accepting people for who they are, and also feeling accepted in return.

I loved the relationship Chase had with his brother, as well as the support Noah had from his friends.  The supporting characters were as well developed as Chase and Noah’s characters were, and in Noah’s case they made a great family for him as well.

While As I Am is not my favorite M/M book by this author, it was still well worth the time to read it and was a solid 4-star read for me.  To me, it did not read as smoothly as past stories I’ve read by Ms. Collins, but even so I’d still recommend it to any M/M romance fan.  This book is meant for readers 18+ for adult language and sexual content.

There’s just something about a second chance romance that is appealing on so many levels, and when it comes with such intense emotion and angst such as what I found in Unsteady, it plays havoc with my heart.  Oh, and on top of that this is also a friends-to-more story, one of my favorite tropes.  Micah and Jude’s story has a lot of ups and downs, and there’s plenty of drama and tension—but there is also a lot of love and plenty of heat.  Each of them has their own set of baggage, and navigating that plus their feelings for each other made for a fantastic read.

Both Micah and Jude captured my heart for different reasons, but what it boils down to is how totally invested in both of them I became and how desperately I wanted to see them get their happily ever after.  There are secrets—those they kept from each other, those being kept from family and friends—that once uncovered create havoc, but also strengthen bonds and show just how much not just Micah and Jude care for each other, but how much friends and family do as well.  The two of them have been through so much in their lives, and thinking of any ending other than them together and happy would have broken my heart.

I was wrapped up in this story from cover to cover, it’s one of those that draws you in to the point where you don’t want to put it down.  The only thing I didn’t particularly care for was the bouncing back and forth from past to present.  Normally I don’t mind flashbacks, but in this story that device felt a bit overused to me and is the only reason I didn’t give this the full five stars.  Other than that, I enjoyed everything else about this book.

Though this is the third book in the author’s On Solid Ground series, it can definitely be read as a standalone.  It’s an angst-lover’s dream, but it is so worth it for every moment Micah and Jude are together.  4.5 stars for Unsteady, and I highly recommend this story to any M/M romance fan but especially if you’re a fan of second chance and friends to lovers stories.  This book is meant for readers 18+ for adult language and M/M sexual content.
