Synopsis

When a plane crashes in the Alaskan wilderness, the best place to land is in the arms of a younger man…

Hotshot attorney Reuben Graham has finally agreed to take a vacation, when his plane suddenly plunges into the Alaskan wilderness.

Just his luck.

But his frustrations have only begun as he finds himself stranded with the injured, and superhot, pilot, a man who’s endearingly sociable—and much too young for Reuben to be wanting him this badly.

As the sole provider for his sisters and ailing father, Tobias Kooly is devastated to learn his injuries will prevent him from working or even making it back home. So when Reuben insists on giving him a place to recover, not even Toby’s pride can make him refuse. He’s never been tempted by a silver fox before, but something about Reuben is impossible to resist.

Recuperating in Reuben’s care is the last thing Toby expected, yet the closer they become, the more incredibly right it feels, prompting workaholic Reuben to question the life he’s been living. But when the pressure Toby’s under starts closing in, both men will have to decide if there’s room in their hearts for a love they never saw coming.

Excerpt

“Stop making yourself sound ancient. I get it, you’re older than me, but you are undoubtedly aware that you’ve got the whole silver bear thing going on.” Clearly the icy water had seeped inside his waders, frozen his brain cells because he’d just said silver bear aloud.

“I’ve got what?” Reuben turned toward him, which made the water ripple around them. F*ck. Toby really was going to have to explain this.

“You know. A lot of guys your age get called silver fox. But you’re kinda taller and broader than a fox…” Could he really dig himself any deeper? “But…uh…still hot. You know?”

“I see.” Reuben’s voice had the sort of gravitas that made Toby’s insides tremble. “If I had time for hookup apps—which I do not—I should put that on my profile. Silver Bear. Like a fox, but bigger and hotter. Think it would get me clicks?”

“Dunno. Put a clip of you pronouncing wine names and it might.” Toby’s tongue appeared to have a mind of its own right then.

“That’s hot, huh? Syrah, Malbec, Aligote, Vranec, Aidani…” Reuben’s tone wasn’t especially flirty, but it also wasn’t all business either. They’d definitely wandered into new territory, away from the more abstract discussion of sexual identity to something more personal. And dangerous, but hell if Toby could resist keeping this going. The whole way-too-personal conversation felt way better than it should have.

“Showoff. And seriously? You’ve never used a hookup app?”

“I’ve got better uses for my time than deciding whether to swipe right. Besides, I’m something of a serial monogamist. I like relationships. I’m lousy at them, but one-night stands have never appealed much to me.”

“Really? Again, I’m the opposite. Relationships don’t do it for me.” Better he get that out front right now. If he was going to be honest about his life, he might as well own up to that part too. And it wasn’t like Reuben was asking him to start something or even would want to start something, and Toby absolutely should know better than to go there too. Nevertheless, he felt he owed it to them both to be clear about who he wasn’t.

“That’s too bad. Bet you change your mind someday.” Reuben’s smile was warm and his tone friendly, flip almost, but something about it grated on Toby.

“Bet I don’t.” Then, because snapping at a client was always a bad idea, he added in a light voice, “You ready for a snack? There’s another spot I want you to try afterward that I think you’ll really like.”

Better they get back to dry land and safer conversation topics for a while before Toby had the urge to share more. He’d had plenty of clients he liked, on multiple levels, so he wasn’t sure what it was about Reuben that totally got under his skin. But he absolutely did, and that could hardly be a good thing.

Author Q&A

Do you find it more challenging to write the first book in a series or to write the subsequent novels?  ARCTIC WILD is book two in the Frozen Hearts series, and there is something about book two in a series that is definitely challenging! Beta Test, At Attention, and now this one were all unique challenges for me. Each book is its own challenge, though. Book One can be a challenge because you’re creating a brand-new world, all new characters, places, important themes etc. But in book two, you’re carrying that universe forward and you’re also limited by what you did in book one, and not just the obvious plot ways. The tone, length, themes, and pacing of book one absolutely affect book two as you try to make sure the series will be cohesive as a whole. And I’m sure it’s just me, but my book two of several series now have taken more intense rewrites to get the story exactly as I want it for my readers. But it’s work I love doing, and I love all the books in my various series!

What is the most surprising thing you discovered while writing this entire series? I loved all my research into Alaska. I discovered so many amazing details, many of which made it to the books, and others which ended up on the cutting room floor so to speak, but which still influenced the series. The research into the food was among the most fun for me, and not just menus, but food storage and preservation and seasons as well.

Who is your favorite character from the Frozen Hearts series? I loved all of the heroes in this trilogy so much. I think River from book 1 and Owen from book 3, who you’ll meet in September, were among the most fun POVs to write. Book Two, ARCTIC WILD, had my favorite secondary characters of the whole series, and I loved writing both heroes too.

Can you share with us something about Arctic Wild that isn’t in the blurb? The blurb is tightly focused on the romance between the heroes, but one of my favorite things about the book is the secondary characters. You’ll meet Toby’s sister, Nell, and Reuben’s daughter, Amelia, and a several other characters who I really enjoyed writing. Also? The blurb won’t tell you that there’s shower sex, but I totally will!

What is the key theme and/or message in Arctic Wild? To me, this book is all about family—the family we are born to, the family we form, and the family we find in unexpected places leading to unbreakable bonds. And love—love creates family, love heals old hurts, and love leads us unexpected places as it renders all those differences between two people irrelevant. I want the message to be that we can form family and find love even in the most trying of circumstances, even when we least expect it, and that family comes in many surprising packages.

Carra's Review

Arctic Wild is another solid example of why I can rely on Annabeth Albert for an enjoyable contemporary romance with any of her releases.  This slow burn age gap story might start out with a kind of prickly older lead character (Reuben)—one I first thought I wasn’t going to care for given his all-work-no-play-whatever-you-have-planned-is-fine attitude—but that quickly changes once he starts actually taking in what’s around him.  And well, yes, having your life brought into sharp contrast when you think you’re about to bite the dust as your plane is going down has a way of refocusing one’s priorities too.

Things do take a while to develop between Reuben and Toby, and there were some points that Toby did frustrate me, but overall I did like them as a couple.  Together they felt more like a “comfortable” couple as things developed as opposed to an intense, passionate one…though that does not mean things between them physically don’t get hot and sexy ;-)

The continued descriptions of the Alaskan wilderness in this second book of the series help bring the scenes to life (and have me adding a trip there to my bucket list).  I was also turned into a solid fan of Reuben’s daughter Amelia once she settles in.  I definitely liked getting the story from both Reuben and Toby’s points of view, and the epilogue was just right.

This story was a solid 4 star read for me, and I think fans of contemporary M/M romance will enjoy this addition to the Frozen Hearts series.  Don’t go into this thinking it’s a crash and survival story though—that only makes up a small portion of the book.  It’s more the trigger for the healing and growing closeness of the main characters for the rest of the story, so let that be reflected in your expectations before you start.  This book is meant for readers 18+ for adult language and sexual content.

Book synopsis

Everything’s bigger in Alaska, especially the HEAs. Annabeth Albert kicks off the brand-new Frozen Hearts series with Arctic Sun, an opposites-attract romance between a rugged outdoorsman and a smoking hot former male model.

He’s built a quiet life for himself in Alaska. But it doesn’t stand a chance against the unrelenting pull of a man who’s everything he shouldn’t want.

Ex-military mountain man Griffin Barrett likes his solitude. It keeps him from falling back into old habits. Bad habits. He’s fought too hard for his sobriety to lose control now. However, his gig as a wildlife guide presents a new kind of temptation in superhot supermodel River Vale. Nothing the Alaskan wilderness has to offer has ever called to Griffin so badly. And that can only lead to trouble…

River has his own methods for coping. Chasing adventure means always moving forward. Nobody’s ever made him want to stand still—until Griffin. The rugged bush pilot is the very best kind of distraction, but the emotions he stirs up in River feel anything but casual, and he’s in no position to stay put.

With temptation lurking in close quarters, keeping even a shred of distance is a challenge neither’s willing to meet. And the closer Griffin gets to River, the easier it is to ignore every last reason he should run.

One-click with confidence. This title is part of the Carina Press Romance Promise: all the romance you’re looking for with an HEA/HFN. It’s a promise!

This book is approximately 95,000 words

Excerpt

Griffin gave what he hoped passed for a smile. “Someone else’s turn?”

“I’ll go.” River offered another of those supernova smiles. “I’ve ridden an elephant, I once had to wear a live cactus on my head, I’ve got six piercings, and I love my unicorn tattoo.”

“No way on the tattoo,” Griffin growled, forgetting to let one of the customers go first. “Pretty sure that’s not allowed in modeling, right?”

“I’m a rebel.” River waggled his eyebrows at him. Judging by their shade, his natural hair color was brown, a bit lighter than Griffin’s own hair, in keeping with River’s pale coloring.

“Live cactus?” Dan snorted. “That sounds painful.”

“It was.” River gave another of those musical laughs.

“Then it must be the piercings. I remember the elephant riding from your book.” Melanie beamed at River like a kid expecting a good grade.

“Yup. Only got four.” River looked right at Griffin as he delivered this bit of news. Griffin tightened his jaw. Now he was going to wonder about the location of those piercings and that tattoo all night, and he had a feeling that might have been River’s goal. His ears were the obvious choice for two piercings, but where else? Nipples? Tongue? He did not need to let his thoughts wander down this path.

Carra's Review

Any time I see Annabeth Albert has a new book coming out, it’s no question that I’ll be putting it on my TBR list.  Add to that the setting of this one in Alaska (a place I’ve never been but is on my travel wish list), and I couldn’t wait to get started on this one.  Arctic Sun has some great characters (both main and supporting), and the writing is solid as I’ve come to expect from this author.

I was a huge fan of both Griffin and River—both of their characters have depth and their own issues with which to cope, and the two of them actually turn out to be more alike in that aspect than they realize.  They each have their own ways of handling their personal demons—River’s way of coping through his nomadic lifestyle is actually what leads the two of them to wind up meeting.  They might not seem to hit it off at first, but River slowly works on wearing Griffin down.

To be honest, while the first part of the story when the characters are on the Alaskan tour was a great setup for things between the two men, everything after that felt much different and for me, it felt like the story moved much slower.  From the end of the tour to a point when they meet up at an event later in the story, it felt off-kilter and my mind did wander from time to time—something that I’ve not had happen before with this author.  During that part of the book both men were addressing their respective personal issues, so I think that might have had a lot to do with it for me since the focus was more on personal rather than relationship development.

Though some parts of the story might have felt drawn out at times, Arctic Sun was still an enjoyable read and gets a 4-star rating from me.  This book is for readers 18+ for adult language and sexual content.

Blurb

One hard-nosed military police officer.

One overly enthusiastic elf.

One poorly timed snowstorm.

Is it a recipe for disaster? Or a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for holiday romance?

Teddy MacNally loves Christmas and everything that goes along with it. When he plays an elf for his charity’s events, he never expects to be paired with a Scrooge masquerading as Santa Claus. His new mission: make the holiday-hating soldier believe he was born to say ho-ho-ho.

Sergeant Major Nicholas Nowicki doesn’t do Santa, but he’s army to his blood. When his CO asks an unusual favor, Nick of course obliges. The elf to his Kris Kringle? Tempting. Too tempting—Nick’s only in town for another month, and Teddy’s too young, too cheerful and too nice for a one-night stand.

The slow, sexy make-out sessions while Teddy and Nick are alone and snowbound, though, feel like anything but a quick hookup. As a stress-free holiday fling turns into Christmas all year round, Teddy can’t imagine his life without Nick. And Nick’s days on the base may be coming to a close, but he doesn’t plan on leaving anything, or anyone, behind.

Carra's Review

Better Not Pout was a bit of sweet mixed with a lot of hot and steamy, set with characters that are both opposites attract and age gap in a holiday romance…so there’s plenty to like about the story.  You know, besides the fact that it’s written by one of my favorite go-to authors.

Nick is your classic military guy, about to retire after almost thirty years of service.  He’s pretty straight-laced, serious, and law abiding…with a soft spot to help that we get to see come out when it comes to kids in need.  Teddy is super-sweet, upbeat, and has a positive outlook.  He comes from a huge, close-knit family—but even so, he has something in common with Nick…they’re both a bit lonely for personal companionship.  Though when Nick first meets Teddy he tries to keep his distance, Teddy quickly grows on him and I liked seeing how Teddy softened Nick up and got him to relax.

Nick only means for things with Teddy to be temporary since Nick’s leaving town once he retires from the military, so when those pesky feeling become involved, that’s where much of the conflict is introduced.  I could feel that bit of slight disconnect between them with Nick trying to keep Teddy in the “temporary” category in his mind, even with their intimate scenes being as scorching as they were.

I liked the small town setting, and the cast of supporting characters was strong.  I did have some odd pictures in my head thanks to Teddy and Nick being in their Santa and elf costumes for certain scenes that were a mix of jolly old Santa Claus with an elf on a shelf being naughty together…

This story was a 4-star read for me, that other star needed that disconnect to disappear and for Nick to be a bit more open to a relationship with Teddy—but Better Not Pout is still a great holiday romance regardless.  This book is meant for readers 18+ for adult language (oh-so-sweet Teddy can have quite the dirty mouth LOL) and steamy sexual content.

Synopsis

Landon can’t believe he’s let himself get roped into participating in a charity calendar, let alone one that features tastefully photographed nudes. The genius physicist is hardly model material and he’s dreading the nude part of the photoshoot. Amid his reluctance, the one bright spot is his emails back and forth with the photographer.

However, Bailey ends up being not quite what Landon expects, and their first meeting is decidedly awkward. Bailey’s persistent though, and gradually Landon warms to the burly photographer, and they discover they have a shared love of gamer culture.

A tentative friendship is born, but the road from friends to lovers isn’t easy. Landon’s battling past trauma and must decide how much of a risk he’s willing to take. A sexy connection may not be enough to keep them together unless both are willing to put their hearts on the line.

Approximately 40,000 words. Previously released as part of the EXPOSED anthology, and loosely linked to the #Gaymers universe, this friends-to-lovers, hurt/comfort story stands alone with a guaranteed happy ending. Contains a brief mention of a prior assault, but no on-screen violence or flashbacks.

LEVEL UP EXCERPT—This is their first kiss, because I absolutely love writing first kiss scenes!

***

Bailey was the type who moved a lot as he gamed, biceps flexing, knees wiggling, shoulders jostling. Landon always liked people who got so into gaming, but it was more than a little distracting. His body was quickly coming to associate that orange scent of Bailey’s with good things, and other parts of him apparently liked Bailey’s nearness, which was a novelty because instead of intimidated, as he would have expected, he was more than a little turned on.

“Oh man, that was a rush.” Bailey laughed as both of their health meters dipped to zero. “I’m almost wishing I’d gone into game art, not photography. Amazing how these graphics have held up over the years.”

“Totally. And speaking of art, let me find the Space Villager stuff.” Landon reluctantly stepped away from the game. He headed to the nearby kitchen, where he was pretty the papers were buried with a stack of mail. Paper control was not his strong suit. “You’ll go nuts at the latest screen shots and promo teasers.”

“Cool.” Rather than follow Landon, Bailey went to sit on the couch.

“You want a drink while I’m in here?” Landon called to him after he found the papers under a pile of pizza ads. “I’ve got four flavors of Snapple, soda, and water.”

“Surprise me with a Snapple flavor.” Bailey looked right at home on Landon’s couch, lounging back.

He really did not look at all like any photographer Landon had ever met, and curiosity had him asking, “So why photography? You said you could have done game design?”

“Yeah, I had plenty of friends at the art institute go that direction. But I’ve been in love with photography ever since I worked on our middle school yearbook. I figured out quickly that taking pictures of events and sports was far more fun than trying to do the sports myself, so I did yearbook all through high school, got a photography scholarship to the art institute in Portland.”

“So you don’t play a sport?” Landon had a hard time believing that. With Bailey’s height and breadth, he totally looked like he lived for weekend games of some type.

“Nope. Hopelessly uncoordinated.” Bailey shot him an endearing smile when Landon handed him the bottle of tea.

“Me too.” Landon clinked bottles with him, then held up the papers. “Found the codes. But can I show you some stuff on the TV screen while you have your drink?”

“Absolutely.” Bailey took a long swig of tea, and Landon had to look away before he got mesmerized by Bailey’s full mouth, how it looked when his tongue chased a stray drop of moisture, how pink it was in contrast to his paler skin and brown beard.

Landon queued up the pre-release trailer Josiah had sent him a link to. Bombastic music filled his small living room as on the screen, and a spaceship pulled in for a landing on a planet filled with ruins of a once-powerful civilization. The narrator had an iconic voice and detailed all the special features of the expansion pack. Landon had already watched this a half-dozen times, and it still gave him happy chills.

“Wow. I can’t wait.” Bailey looked suitably awed. “This is even cooler than when War Elf added the mystic raids.”

“I know, right? Now look at the in-game screen shots.” He brought up another video, body relaxing more and more despite Bailey’s nearness. It was just so awesome to have someone new to share this with. He’d been hyped about this all week, but Pike was distracted by his boyfriend Zack’s deployment, Savannah didn’t game much, and the rest of his regular crew seemed to have other things occupying their attention.

Somehow, as he shared more video clips, he drifted closer to Bailey, so that their knees were almost rubbing. It wasn’t a giant couch, so there wasn’t a ton of room to move back, but even so, Landon wasn’t looking for an escape. He was aware of Bailey, very much so, but not nearly as freaked out as he’d been a few hours ago. Instead, his senses seemed to soak up Bailey’s scent and nearness, and it wasn’t until the fourth or fifth video that he realized that he was aroused.

Clink. Somehow Landon’s left hand, holding his drink, and Bailey’s right hand tangled.

“Oops.” He tried to extricate himself without spilling both beverages. Bending to put his on the floor, he hadn’t realized that Bailey had also leaned down until their heads collided.

“Ow,” they said simultaneously.

“Oh my gosh. I’m so sorry.” Bailey reached out, feeling around on Landon’s head. “Did you see stars? Break the skin?”

“I’m fine.” Landon didn’t pull away. Bailey’s hand felt damn nice. Gentle. Soothing more than just the bump on his head. Their eyes met, and he really needed to move back, break this spell, but he didn’t, instead leaning into to the touch. Bailey’s eyes darkened, and he stroked down Landon’s jaw. God, that felt so good, like an extra blanket on a chilly night, warmth he hadn’t realized he was missing. How long had it been since he’d been touched like this? Hugged, sure. He’d hugged Savannah goodnight, and hugged and wrestled around with his best friend Pike at the last LAN party, but neither of those things was touch like this. Caring. Sweet. Arousing.

Bailey leaned in again, way slower this time, all the time in the world for Landon to stop him. But he didn’t. Bailey’s beard tickled an instant before their lips met, a soft slide of mouths. Not aggressive at all, not the on-a-tight-schedule rush of a hookup, Bailey kissed like they had a sleepy Sunday afternoon to kill, like each reaction of Landon’s mattered, like he was trying to memorize something important and was going to take his time learning the lesson.

Landon was the first one to take things further, mouth opening on a sigh, welcoming Bailey’s agile tongue. He tasted sweet, like tea, and minty like the gum he’d popped after the pizza, familiar yet new at the same time. How had he managed to forget how awesome kissing could be? A laugh bubbled up in his chest, but quickly transformed to a groan of pleasure as Bailey nipped at his lower lip.

Not content to let Bailey be the one exploring, Landon sent his own tongue on a quest, tracing Bailey’s full lower lip, delving inside to rub tongues, retreating playfully to earn another nip. F*ck. This was nice. The video switched over to something random, and he barely registered it. He couldn’t say how long they kissed, just that he didn’t want it to ever end.

Carra's Review

Landon and Bailey become acquainted with each other through email, developing a friendship that both become invested in before they ever even meet in person.  Those emails take place before the start of this story, so we don’t get to see that part of their connection beginning…which was actually fine, and for me didn’t affect my enjoyment of the book.  What did affect it was Bailey—but in the most positive way.

Bailey was an incredibly sweet, thoughtful, and caring man, and I totally fell in love with his character right from the start—then kept falling for him again and again with every supportive word, gesture, and conversation.  He was so understanding of Landon’s situation, and his patience and constant friendship were moving—though at the same time I was a little frustrated by Landon’s difficulty in moving forward with him.  But oh, how I adored Bailey.

I do understand the reasons behind Landon’s reluctance to attempt anything more than friendship, but at the same time it was disheartening to see how this stunted Landon’s healing process.  It also slowed the development of their relationship to the point that it made this novella feel like a much longer story to me.  I felt bad for Bailey since he was so open and compassionate with Landon, and it was Landon’s past that he kept letting get in the way of their relationship becoming so much more.

Level Up wound up being a 3.5-star read for me, and I attribute all of the positives to the wonderful Bailey.  Overall though this is a good read and one I would recommend.  I’m a bit nerdy myself, so that aspect of Landon’s character was a plus for me even when he was frustrating me.  This story is meant for readers 18+ for adult language and sexual content.
